Understanding US Healthcare: Four Books You Don’t Want To Miss

I have had the privilege of working at an organization which is actively improving the lives of its members and also was mentioned by the President as a model for the nation. Over the past few years, I have also demonstrated to first year medical students what 21st century primary care should look and feel like – a fully comprehensive medical record, secure email to patients, support from specialists, and assistance from chronic conditions staff.
But as my students know, there are also some suggested reading assignments. I’m not talking about Harrison’s or other more traditional textbooks related to medical education. If the United States is to have a viable and functioning health care system, then it will need every single physician to be engaged and involved. I&...

Who Else Wants To Think Outside Of The Healthcare Reform Box?

I want to preface this with something I should have said a long time ago:
All posts reflect my own opinions, not those of anyone I’ve had the good fortune to learn from, work with, and otherwise spend time around.
It could hardly be otherwise with my own blog. But addressing folks in healthcare, you’ve got to be a bit careful.
IT folks get it, but in healthcare we’re not all individuals, much as we’d like to think otherwise. We are born from a very old profession, and that means being tied like nobody’s business to colleagues, training academies, membership societies, support staff, patients, and public opinion. Say the wrong thing, and you step on some toesies of other bees in the hive.
And that’s a problem, when it comes to innovation.
So That’s ...

A book title recently came across my twitter stream called: The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care The title sounded familiar and when I went and learned more about the book, I realized it was from the same author of the relatively famous business book called The Innovator’s Dilemma The book is written by Harvard Business School’s Clayton M. Christensen who is a very popular writer at Harvard business school. I’ve read a number of his works and the man is just good at what he does.
Of course, this makes me wonder if he knows anything about health care. Has anyone read this book? I’d love to hear some reviews about whether it’s worth my time to read it or not.

A physician-friend of mine is raving about The Innovator’s Prescription by Clay Christensen and team. My friend tells me it’s the best book ever written on health care, and has even sent me a copy via Amazon.com as an early birthday present (thank you!)
Indeed, the author himself claims it’s “the first book ever that actually [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Being big fans of Clay Christensen and his theory of disruptive innovation (DI), we have been awaiting his just-released book The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Healthcare . The book is co-authored by Dr. Jerome Grossman and Dr. Jason Hwang.
We have mixed reactions.
The book is mistitled. It should have been titled "The Innovator’s Diagnosis". The book does a fantastic job at diagnosis (Dx) of problems in the U.S. health care system. It presents many new, innovative analytical frameworks and lenses through which to view the U.S. health system.
However, it’s weak on prescription (Rx): many of the proposed solutions are speculative, ungrounded, and/or defy political reality.
