I’m getting ready to head west for, among other things, the annual AMDIS Physician-Computer Connection in Ojai, Calif., a high-level gathering of chief medical information officers. After years of fighting for a seat at the table, CMIOs now are being held up as a model, at least overseas.
Specifically, my friends at E-Health Insider in the UK have embarked on a mission to have every NHS hospital hire a chief clinical information officer, the British equivalent of the CMIO. Read more about the British perspective on the American CMIO here.

The FDA Bad Ad program, in which someone drops a dime on offending promotional materials, has turned up another violator. The latest is Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals, which is headed by former ImClone Systems ceo and convicted inside trader, Sam Waksal.
In a warning letter posted on the FDA web site, Sam & Co. are taken to task for a host of offenses in connection with a Statgram communication for the Infergen hepatitis c treatment - omitting and minimizing risk info; broadening the indication and omitting important facts; overstating efficiacy; making unsubstantiated claims, and failing to provide adequate directions for use. In short, Three Rivers did almost nothing right.
Topping the list: the Statgram claims docs can obtain additional prescribing info, including the safety profile ...

An FDA chemist named Cheng Yi Liang was charged today by the US Securities and Exchange Commission with insider trading on confidential info about upcoming announcements of 27 different FDA approval decisions involving 19 publicly traded companies and generated more than $3.6 million in illegal profits for himself. And would you believe that he avoided incurring any losses?
Some of the FDA announcements involved approval of new drugs while others concerned were negative decisions. In each instance, the SEC says he traded in the same direction as the announcement, but worked hard to disguise his work. Beginning in July 2006, Liang traded in seven brokerage accounts, including six listed in the names of other people, including his 25-year-old (who was also charged) and his 84-year-old mothe...

The Massachussets Secretary of the Commonwealth has filed a complaint that accuses a hedge fund of making profits on two pharmaceuticals stock by using insider information. Specifically, Risk Reward Capital Management was charged with using a so-called expert consultant to obtain advance info about an Ariad Pharmaceuticals clinical trial and a forthcoming abstract about a med sold by Questor Pharmaceuticals.
According to the complaint, Risk Reward principal investment advisor James Silverman* retained Guidepoint Global for an $80,000 annual fee in exchange for obtaining alleged insider info. He hired the firm in early 2008, after his fund lost 16.9 percent in 2007, which was his first year of operation.
Ultimately, Guidepoint arranged for him to meet with 225 experts, about 60 percent of ...

In a move that some may consider long overdue, more than a dozen of the most prestigious medical journals will consider requiring doctors who submit studies to disclose any payments received from hedge funds and other large investors. The proposal is expected to be discussed at the next annual meeting of The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which is scheduled for June, according to a spokeswoman for the New England Journal of Medicine.
The possibility follows ongoing concerns about conflicts of interest between researchers and the pharmaceutical industry and the extent to which undisclosed financial relationships may unduly influence medical research and, from there, medical practice. But the issue is also encompassing financial ties to large investors, given the growing...

By Walter OlsonEconomists can actually measure the value of insider connections:
[L]obbyists connected to US Senators suffer an average 24% drop in generated revenue when their previous employer leaves the Senate. The decrease in revenue is out of line with pre-existing trends, it is discontinuous around the period in which the connected Senator exits Congress and it persists in the long-term. … Measured in terms of median revenues per ex-staffer turned lobbyist, this estimate indicates that the exit of a Senator leads to approximately a $177,000 per year fall in revenues for each affiliated lobbyist.
The fall is steeper, the researchers find, when the departing member of Congress sat on a powerful committee such as Appropriations, Senate Finance, or (on the House side) Ways and Mea...

Ultimately, Goldfield made nearly $14 million on his trades, according to the lawsuit.
The men allegedly met while attending the Executive MBA program at the Wharton School of Business in the mid-1990’s and, in March 2007, Self exec passed along confidential info about MedImmune. She made the patriotic and social media-savvy announcement on Tuesday, and her Twitter followers have gone from 4,000 to 66,163. (Are you or your partner one of them?)
The fateful match determining the exhausting work ahead of Bobbi takes place this Sunday, when the Netherlands and Spain vie for the world championship – and a lot of bragging rights.

Over the last few years, we have received quite a few emails asking questions of both Associate Q and myself, here are a few of the questions and some answers…
How did the Dental Insider come about?
Back in 2005, I read a book by Hugh Hewitt called Blog and I found it very interesting. One point Mr. Hewitt made in the book is that you should find something you are passionate about and write about it. I found that there was not one place where someone in the industry could go to find out information about the happenings in the industry. I wanted the Dental Insider to be a place to find out industry information, product released, product recalls, and a place where people could share information that would be useful to all. I started the Dental Insider in March of 2006. Associate Q came...

That’s what James Chin advises in Malaysian Insider and he also delves with issues on why the continues to be a haemorrhage of doctors from public service.
Thus I am worried when I read that the government has grand plans to privatise more and more of the public healthcare system. Some of the options include having a private ward where patients who are willing to pay more get first preference in treatment. This scheme is called the Full-Paying Patients (FPP) scheme.
The government’s argument is that by having a FPP scheme operating in more specialised clinics and hospitals, it will stop the exodus of highly-trained professionals from the public to the private sector. On the surface this argument holds water but on close inspection, you really have to wonder if it will stop a sp...

Do you recognize the man in the photo? Why, it’s none other than Sam Waksal, who became infamous for tipping off Martha Stewart when shares in ImClone Systems, the drugmaker that he founded, were about to take a dive back in 2001.
A photographer for The New York Post took this shot of Waksal entering his Bronx, New York, halfway house, where he arrived only last week after serving five years in prison. And apparently, he’s getting VIP treatment - he was given a weekend furlough and looks like he went shopping. He’s holding bags from Smythson, a luxury leather shop in midtown Manhattan.

I had reliable internet access over the last 2 weeks. I will say that the cable company was on-time and resolved the problem in a few hours. It turned out that they had to rewire most of the house, add new splitter and an amplifier, in order for us to get our internet service back. They also put in an order to have new cable run from the street to the house, all of which is underground. We’ll see if that actually happens. That being said, it is good to be able to post a few of the stories from the last couple of weeks.

Premier Dental Products Company of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania announces the launch of a genuinely different type of contest, open to all licensed dentists in the United States. The single prize consists of a contribution from Premier of $20,000 made in the winner’s name to the dental charity or dental university of their choice. “We all want to make a difference in our workplace and community and this contest was inspired to appeal to that inner philanthropist in every individual. The prize of a significant charitable contribution empowers the winner to give back on a grander scale than normal circumstances might allow,” states Julie Charlestein, Premier Dental’s Vice President of Branding and Business Development.
Reeling from unrelenting press, Congressional investigations and sagging stock prices, the drugmakers this morning issued a statement saying they “strongly object to mischaracterizations about the Enhance trial” for their Vytorin cholesterol med, and attempt to defend their actions during and after the Jan. 14 release of the controversial study results.
A quick recap: the study was designed to measure plaque in neck arteries, but results weren’t released for nearly two years. The drugmakers blame the delay on difficulty reading ultrasound images. But they briefly changed the primary endpoint without consulting their lead investigator; there was no data safety monitoring board, and they appointed an ‘independent’ panel to review the data, but three members had...

It’s been a while since we posted anything about the anesthetic shortage, so I thought we would give an update. Over the summer and fall, anesthetic inventories remained high with the exception of Astra brand anesthetics. As of now, we are under the winter shipping rules for anesthetic, and shipments may thin out a bit, especially in extremely cold weather.
I spoke with several dealers across the United States last week about inventories and rationing. All said that they ordered heavy going into winter and that they didn’t think anesthetic would be a problem through the spring. A couple of dealers are still rationing anesthetic to their customers, which might not be a bad thing for others to consider.
I think that we are in much better shape than a year ago with regards to thi...

Now, the House Energy and Commerce Committee wants to know more about the so-called independent panel formed to review the Vytorin trial data, the study’s Data Safety Monitoring Board, stock sales by Schering-Plough execs and the amount of money spent on Vytorin by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, given the trial results showed the drug wasn’t more effective than cheap generic versions of Zocor, which is part of the Vytorin combo therapy.
The congressmen leading the probe - John Dingell and Bart Stupak, both Democrats from Michigan - sent separate letters today seeking all sorts of info from CMS and Schering-Plough. Already, they’re looking at whether Merck and Schering-Plough concealed or manipulated clinical trial data, given that the release of the Vytor...

I signed up and have spent the last week or so checking out all of the features of the site. Why did you start www.dentalsalespro.com?

If you’re not reading Joe and Nancy Sakaduski’s Marketing Blog, you are missing out on some great insight from two of the industries great minds. Joe has posted his thoughts and observations from the Greater New York Dental Meeting.
Well another Greater New York Meeting is almost in the books, and it seems a few patterns don’t change. There were dentists on Sunday, nobody on Monday and Tuesday, and there will be a few dentists on Wednesday. With the outrageous costs of hotel rooms, and increases in just about everything else, the New York Dental Society needs to realize what a tremendous financial drain a four-day meeting is for manufacturers. Talking about biting the hand that feeds you! - Joe Sakaduski

The “Dentsply Effect” - 1 Year Later

In August we asked our readers how Dentsply’s Stategic Partnership Agreement had affected them over the last year. We had a fair amount of respondents that lost the line, but we also had a couple of dealers that kept the line respond as well. Here is what we found…
Of those that lost the line, some placed additional orders with Dentsply through the cutoff date, while others either stopped placing orders with Dentsply all together or sourced the product from other places. (Gray Market)
Many of the discontinued dealers found that they were able to convert Dentsply sales into competing products and there were only a couple of products that they had trouble switching customers off of (Viscogel and Aquasil Ultra).

I was looking at some recent comments that needed approval and I came across a trackback link to an oddly named website. When I clicked through to the site, I found it to be a dental related site that post stories taken from other websites, including The Dental Insider, The Dental Implant Blog and others. So what is the problem you ask…these people are re-posting material without permission or giving proper credit to the author in accordance with the 1998 DMCA.

When we got back from vacation last week, we had quite a few emails from our readers. One email caught my eye and I found it quite interesting and thought provoking. The reader told of a situation that he has run into in his sales territory and asked what my opinion was of the situation. After thinking about it for a bit, I thought I would share it with all of you.
(Names, companies, and locations have been left out intentionally, and we are giving you the Readers Digest version of this email.)
The reader says that a little over a year ago a sales rep for one of the major wholesale manufacturers, was hired by a retail supply house. Many of the retail sales reps in the area were concerned that the guy who they had taken into their offices during co-travel days, would now be their competitio...

The DTA’s (Dental Trade Alliance) annual meeting is going on now through Friday at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and Spa in Farmington, PA. This is the annual meeting where all of the “Over-weight, Under-sexed, Middle-aged” men that run the dental industry get together to pat themselves on the backs and talk about what they have done over the last 12 months. Instead, they should be talking about the future of this industry and how to stabilize it and make it better. Gentlemen, and ladies….put your ego’s aside and get this industry back on track. If you haven’t already noticed…The Chinese are Coming!
If anyone attending the annual meeting would care to share their insights or observations with our readers, we would be happy to post them. Send them ...

It’s hard to believe that as of Sunday morning July 1st, half of 2007 is in the books. Where did the time go? If the second half of 2007 is anything like the first, we are in for a wild ride. It appears that another independent dental supply house is in play and we could see a bidding war between HSIC and PDCO for this company, only time will tell.
I received an email from a reader that I found interesting, it came from an East Coast supplier, here is the body of the email.
BECKER PARKIN was sold. We have access to hundreds of products that are not on the attached list. Please send us anything that you were buying
from Becker and we will do our best to source the product for you.

ANNAPOLIS, MD: June 14, 2007 - The Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) has announced a “YouTube” style contest for video clips that promote infection control in the operatory. Anyone can enter the I See IC Dental Reality Contest by uploading a video clip on the OSAP website. The video clips will be posted on www.OSAP.org, where visitors can vote for their favorites.

Memorial Day in the United States.
First off….I told you a while back that I was analyzing Dentsply’s 1st quarter numbers and I would post my thoughts on it. I have been fairly busy as of late and put it on the back burner, but after receiving 5 emails from readers requesting that I post my thoughts, here they are.
Disclaimer: I am not a financial analysts, nor do I pretend to be one, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last week, so take it for what it’s worth. The numbers that I am using are coming from the transcript of the May 1, 2007 conference call...

I recently came across a site called Search4DentalSchools.com.
The dental industry continues to grow, as more and more people seek a bright, shining white smile. As the need for dentists and orthodontists grows, so does the need for professional dental support staff. If you enjoy working with people and want to see them smile, a career in dental assisting might be perfect for you!
Currently, the site focuses on providing school information for those interested in being dental assistants or hygienists. I’m preparing to expand the site to include a resources section and pre-dental/dentistry school information. We’ve been online for about a year and a half, and we’re preparing to expand the site. Our primary goal is to match people looking for dental education with a school ...

Recently the dental laboratory magazine LMT ran an article called “LMT’s 2007 Crown Experiment: Not in my mouth!” They sent out 9 impressions to 6 domestic laboratories and 3 foreign laboratories. They were sent out as if they were coming from any “Regular Joe” Dentist, the labs were unaware they were taking part in this experiment. Once LMT received the crowns back from the labs they took them to two well known dental schools, NYU and UCONN, where they were evaluated by 11 different faculty members. You can find all the details, including a blog, at www.lmtcommunications.com, so in the interest of keeping this short I will get right to the point. The title of the article says it all; none of the crowns that were reviewed were rated as acceptable according to ...

Sunday started off just like every other Sunday in the trade show world. Everyone was dragging their tails and drinking lots of coffee. I understand that the CDA held an Exhibitor’s Breakfast for all exihibitors and those that made it to the show early enough to attend, said it was a nice spread and much appreciated. The traffic on Sunday seemed light in early going, but picked up around lunchtime. I am not sure how the day finished as I took off for Disneyland for the afternoon and evening.

Saturday started off a bit slow, but picked up around lunchtime as well as in the late afternoon. Many of the manufacturers that I spoke with said that sales were good on Saturday, but were down overall for this show. There were a few booths that had exceptional traffic today, Colgate and GC America. Colgate had a theatre set up for a product demonstration and GC america was playing “Drill or No Drill” they’re version of Deal or No Deal with some beautiful models.
There was the usual sports stars signing balls. The Glove Club had Jerry Rice of Dancing with the Stars fame and Pete Rose, “Charlie Hustle”. Inndianapolis Colts lineman, Tartik Glenn, was signing balls at Best Buy Dental Supply Booth.
I recorded a podcast today, but with the poor wi-fi service here ...

The 2007 CDA kicked off today with little fanfare. Traffic seemed busy at times, but slow for the better part of the day. I spoke with several manufacturers andf most said that the number of orders written was minimal. They hoped that Saturday would be better. I spoke with a couple of Dentsply employees about the consolidation of dealers, they claimed that sales were off in their respective divisions and that morale within Dentsply was poor.
Saw a few new products that looked interesting, I will have a write up on these later. If you are in Anaheim, take a look at GC’s G-Cem, 3M’s Protemp Crown, and SDS Dental equipment.
Thanks to the fine folks at Hereaus Kuklzer, Matsco, Coltene Whaledent and the Uof P Alumni Association for the invites to their parties.

Today, I am off to Anaheim, Ca. for 5 days to attend the California Dental Association show. This is considered one of the top 5 shows in the country and is always fun to attend. I will be posting daily and I am going to record a podcast from the road and hopefully have it posted from Anaheim. (Depending on wi-fi service)
As many of you know, Dentsply released its first quarter earnings on Monday evening. I have spent some time digesting the numbers , listening to the conference call and I have a few thoughts on the subject. I will try to get those thoughts posted in the next few days.

From Exceptional Dental Practice Management Blogger Linda Zdanowicz. Linda had an article published in the March issue of Dental Economics. Linda’s article is entitled “How would Aristotle, one of the greatest thinkers of all time, manage today’s dental practice?”
The article uses the ideas in Tom Morris’ book If Aristotle Ran General Motors, which centers around the four foundations of human excellence: truth, unity, goodness, and beauty and translates them into a dental office environment. Definitely worth reading. Congratulations Linda…well deserved!
While I reading Linda’s site the other day, she had a You Tube Video posted and I really got a kick out of it, so I thought I would share it with you. You can view it here.

In the last year we have added Associate Q to the staff, increased readers from 0 per day to now over 100 per day and have been producing the Dental Insider Podcast on a monthly basis.
We want to thank all of YOU, our readers, for your continued readership and support over the last 12 months. We appreciate your comments, both good and bad, and input for both the blog and the podcast. We hope to make the next 12 months even better than the last 12.
If you have any comments, suggestions or ideas for stories for the blog or podcast, send us an email: dentainsider[ at] gmail.com
Thank you once again!
