Motivational Mantra: Frances McDormand On The Power Of ‘No’

It’s a scary thing going into the workforce with a $50,000 debt and you’ve been trained as a classical theatre actor. There’s always a depression in the theatre. There’s only two givens with choosing acting as a profession: one is you will always be unemployed, always, and it doesn’t matter how much money you make, you’re still always going to be unemployed; and that you have no power. The only power you have is the word no.
—Frances McDormand, as told to The Guardian

Virginia Madsen's Spiritual Advice: Amateur but Still Ace

Virginia Madsen has always seemed down to earth to me, but when I spotted her byline on a spring cleaning article this morning in The Daily Love, I was a little surprised: She even does her own laundry? Sike. She’s not giving lessons on how to wash floors; she’s telling us how to scour ourselves of bad energy and wake up our inner selves. Naturally.
Madsen’s advice is simple:
Try something new to excite, or wake up your inner self. Try yoga, cycling or raising your heart rate with a simple walk around the block. With simple “baby steps” we can transform our own energy. By doing so we create momentum that can affect ourselves, and those around us. I think of this as a kind of “spring cleaning” of the body mind and spirit.
…and the rest of her post is brief. ...

S#*! My Tea Says: Are These "Inspirational Quotes" Really That Inspiring?

I like products that make me feel good: Green tea, for instance. It’s full of antioxidants that do my body good, and the caffeine doesn’t hurt, either. But every once in a while I catch myself staring blankly at a fortune cookie-esque quote on my tea bag or under the lid of my kombucha, and wondering: “What the hell?” Most products don’t feel the need to provide my daily affirmations, so why do certain foods and drinks take it upon themselves to remind me to be compassionate and virtuous?
Here are a few things my tea has talked to me about lately…Do you find these messages inspiring or annoying? Tell us in the comments section, below:

Do stuff. Be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.

Part of the meaning of our lives is to spread inspiration to others. The ripples of peace and harmony spread to others from us. Retirement doesn't mean our work is done. It might be just beginning. A new mission in life awaits during each era. Today's Daily Word - Sunday, November 22, 2009, from Silent Unity "HarmonyMy life is a blessing of peace and harmony.I begin this day with harmony in my thoughts and feelings. I am calm in mind and body. Through all of my activities, I stay attuned to my feelings and emotions. The moment I feel anxious or afraid, I consider that God's peace is always here for me. I stop, breathe deeply and claim God's peace as my own. My emotions calm. As I bring a supportive sense of calm to my interactions with others, I am guided to right thought and actions.
Today I’d like to take a break from long articles and just focus on one practical tip you can use right now or whenever you need it.
A few years ago – well, probably 10 years ago by now – I discovered a really good way to get rid of hiccups. It has worked every time I have used it. In the following years I have told family and friends about it and as far as I can remember it has worked as well for them as it has for me.
You need to focus
Here’s what you do. When you have the hiccups just focus your eyes and attention on something in front of you. Maybe it’s a road sign, a painting or some other object. Focus on just that thing. Don’t let anything or anyone else enter your field of focus. Just focus 100% of your attention on that object. Do so for a minute or two and you should ...

Many of his quotes have a zen-like quality, such as "Once we accept our limits, we go beyond them." One of my favorites is "Try not to become a person of success, but a person of value." Enjoy the video below, and have a good week.
