We frequently hear about celebrities and what they do (or don’t) do in the gym, but what about real women? We’re far more interested in the accomplishments and challenges of real women who’ve made health and fitness a priority. So we’re starting “That Girl,” a column meant to celebrate women of all ages, shapes, sizes and athletic persuasions, from all over the country (and hopefully beyond). This week, we’re kicking it off with Jo Shott, a competitive runner and triathlete:

Motivational Mantra: Frances McDormand On The Power Of ‘No’

It’s a scary thing going into the workforce with a $50,000 debt and you’ve been trained as a classical theatre actor. There’s always a depression in the theatre. There’s only two givens with choosing acting as a profession: one is you will always be unemployed, always, and it doesn’t matter how much money you make, you’re still always going to be unemployed; and that you have no power. The only power you have is the word no.

As the cancer that attacks white blood cells began to spread, her mother encouraged her to write a bucket list of things she’d like to accomplish before the cancer wins the fight. It was only three days ago that she set up Alice’s Bucket List, but her brave face, and inspirational goals (which include increasing bone marrow donorship) have ignited social media sites, and her name has become a trending topic on Twitter.

We talk big about getting outside for exercise and spending time in the great outdoors, but the reality, at least for us city-dwellers, is that a lot of our outside-time is spent on ugly, grey, dirty streets. Instead of smiling, happy people taking in the scenery on slow, meditative walks, we mostly see people plowing through the streets with their heads down and headphones on: Hardly the restorative health boost we wish our outdoor experience could be. But GOOD recently asked readers to submit photos of happy stuff in the street, which reminded us that it’s not only off-road trails and trees that are worth getting outdoors for. Occasionally, a car plastered in Post-It notes that say “I Love You” or funny graffiti makes us smile, and that’s worth a jog, bike, or wal...

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms and no legs, and struggled through his formative years with self esteem. Realizing that his condition could inspire others, he started a non-profit organization called Life Without Limbs when he was 17, and even wrote a book with the same name. He was nominated in 2005 for the Young Australian of the Year Award, and is now a motivational speaker touring schools around the globe. He explains how hard someone may think they have it, but when they take a look at him, it seems to put everything in perspective. Vujicic’s main goal is for people to realize how important and precious they are, and to never think they’re less than worthy. On top of that, he has a wicked funny-bone.
Narayanan Krishnan used to be an award winning chef with Taj Hotels in India. Upon noticing the poverty and hunger afflicting his country, Krishnan decided to quit his lucrative job, and now runs a not-for-profit organization that provides three meals a day to India’s hungry and indigent people, most of whom are elderly. He also bathes them, and provides shaves and haircuts. For all his efforts, Krishnan was recently presented with the CNN Heroes award. In Krishnan’s words, happiness comes from giving, and the joy that comes with making other people happy and healthy. The next time you need a pick-me-up, instead of treating yourself, do something nice for a friend, or even a stranger. You might be surprised at the potent results.
Virginia Madsen's Spiritual Advice: Amateur but Still Ace

Virginia Madsen has always seemed down to earth to me, but when I spotted her byline on a spring cleaning article this morning in The Daily Love, I was a little surprised: She even does her own laundry? Sike. She’s not giving lessons on how to wash floors; she’s telling us how to scour ourselves of bad energy and wake up our inner selves. Naturally.
Madsen’s advice is simple:
Try something new to excite, or wake up your inner self. Try yoga, cycling or raising your heart rate with a simple walk around the block. With simple “baby steps” we can transform our own energy. By doing so we create momentum that can affect ourselves, and those around us. I think of this as a kind of “spring cleaning” of the body mind and spirit.
…and the rest of her post is brief. ...

I like products that make me feel good: Green tea, for instance. It’s full of antioxidants that do my body good, and the caffeine doesn’t hurt, either. But every once in a while I catch myself staring blankly at a fortune cookie-esque quote on my tea bag or under the lid of my kombucha, and wondering: “What the hell?” Most products don’t feel the need to provide my daily affirmations, so why do certain foods and drinks take it upon themselves to remind me to be compassionate and virtuous?
Here are a few things my tea has talked to me about lately…Do you find these messages inspiring or annoying? Tell us in the comments section, below:

The people who are attending this symposium — as well as the Carter Center itself — have done much to improve mental health care in the U.S., but it’s not something you hear enough about.
Also posts like these from Liz Spikol, I forgot my meds. Or one from Philip Dawdy,Lamictal Withdrawal, both journalists who share personal struggles and life stories regarding mental illness, wellness and medications and often open the door to extremely diverse discussion, which is in fact is why those 2 are the foundation for mental health blogs in my opinion.
Okay here's a list of movers and shakers that never fail to keep me grounded:Puglet Ponderings cause she actually HAD the Chiari surgery, and now is defiantly reclaiming life better than anyone I know. Who floats in Belize, a few weeks after her brain was zippered shut? okay that might sound extreme, but hell. She is an artist and has a lot of guts, and she's going to India next. After she does investigative research on dating psychiatric types.
I read many blogs searching for inspiration because my own blog reads as so depressing to me. I was quite surprised to see that one of my favorite and inspirational blog-friends nominated me with this "Inspirational Blog Award". First that made me laugh, which is why I like Anonymous Mom so much. I am glad to know that my cuss-filled rants inspire someone. I really should have a disclaimer somewhere on my sidebar, because one post could have a sappy quote and another one could be full of %$#@@ piss and moan stuff. I never thought of myself as inspiring at all. Frankly, I think when people read my name attached to stuff I always wonder if they think "Oh God, now what does she have to say?"Thanks Anonymous Mom. I'm going outside to think a bit and add some blogs for further inspirational rea...
