With a year that's gone by in a blink and a holiday season that's already at my doorstep, I needed a little something to get myself into the spirit of the season. So last night, while New York was celebrating the lighting of the big tree in Rockefeller Center, Chris and I went to Madison Square Garden to see Cirque de Soleil's "Wintuk."I had never seen a Cirque show until this past summer, when we saw Kooza in Hartford. It. Was. Awesome. Kooza was a circus for grown ups, and Chris and I spent the entire show with our mouths hanging open, muttering, "Did you see that?" So when we saw tickets for Wintuk on sale in NYC, it made sense (not economic sense, but life sense) to take in that show. And it, too, was awesome. Different from ...

I have to admit it: I have a diabetes crush. He is funny, upbeat, realistic, and is easy to identify with. I've watched all his dLife segments and I think I speak for the entire dLife editorial team when i say, "Jim Turner ... sigh ... he's the best!"And he came into the office on Friday, just in time to see us all decked out in our Halloween finest. (Note: I managed to ditch the red riding hood cape for the picture, but others weren't as quickly uncostumed. The coworker on my left doesn't usually have this fluffy hairdo, for example.) Swoon. Jim Turner has been living with type 1 diabetes for several decades now, but you wouldn't know by looking at him. He looks healthy, seems happy, and has a wicked sense of humor that makes y...

Free Worldwide Tech Support For Vista Service Pack 1

Microsoft is now offering free tech support for Vista SP 1 via email, chat, or toll-free telephone. This offer is valid worldwide until March 18, 2009. The article I found that let this information be widely known is on Digital Inspirations by Amit Agarwal. When you have a look at that article, consider signing up for Mr. Agarwal's free e-mail newsletter. Personally, I find his efforts to gather truly useful information and articles to be superb. His newsletter is one of the first bits of e-mail that I read after family mail. Be careful. It is good enough to be addicting. This information is also listed on Lifehacker and by Microsoft in its Help and Support pages for Vista.Peace, Doc (Source: Solo Shrink)

I am thankful for every morsel of my life. And here's hoping those morsels are low-carb, because today is going to be a challenge in numbers management. :) Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Two of my inspirations have updated their Caring Bridge pages. Connor was an honorary chair at the Relay For Life last June with HalfBrainBoy. His story was quite amazing and gets more amazing with each passing day as he thrives. You can see his latest update here and see a beautiful new photo of him. Meeting his family at the Relay and hearing his story, the universal story of survivors, fighters, well it makes me proud to do what I have been doing for the past five years as we've come together as a team since Keith's brain tumor. Grant lit the torch for our 2006 Relay. Find his latest update here and feel free to go to his guestbook and answer his latest question. His family prints off the pages of responses that he receives and reads them to him. They are a highlight of his day. And ple...

There is fabulous news in their world. You can visit her blog and learn more about it there. But things are looking much brighter than they did the last time I wrote about her here.Grant is still lighting his family's world with his lovely life. He brings them joy and shows determination with every passing day. He asks questions which he loves to have answered in the guestbook of his CaringBridge site, if you care to answer. His parents read the answers to him, which he enjoys.Connor and his family received wonderful news this week. No more brain tumor! Do you remember Connor's story?
My SIL Diane lost her father this weekend. I do not even remember when she told me that he was waging his own war on cancer, but I know that she puts forth her own quiet efforts whenever Relay comes around. She has so many other things going on all of the time with two very busy high school aged kids who are active in more activities than I could even name. And she and my brother work full time as well. They are the ultimate fast-paced family of today. I'm not sure how they keep it all straight. (Probably less time on the computer, heh.)In fact, I have two brothers who's families live lives that are much faster paced than my own. They accomplish more in one day than I manage to get done in a week. I envy how many checkmarks they must have on their to-do lists in comparison to mine. This to...

I'm adding a new name to my Inspiration list tonight (those who keep me working steady on the fund raising for ACS or folks who are battling cancer and need funds personally to keep going...) I was out at my friend Wesley's blog (you remember the Holy Roaster, don't you?) a bit ago and he shared the story of a former student of his from a high school ministry he served in Nebraska a few years back. Ashley is now battling Acute Mylogenous Leukemia and it is one tough battle for this young woman. Please visit her site, read her story and maybe even sign up for the email updates so you can follow her progress and send your best thoughts and prayers her way on a regular basis. Thank you. Wow! When Kerri was first diagnosed as a little girl and having almost no knowledge of Type I Diabetes, the thought flew through my mind one day that maybe a wedding was not in her future. What did I know then? Not much! Through the years of experiencing the growing pains of a child with diabetes and educating myself, I knew on an intellectual level that it was indeed possible. However, as a parent, I was always waiting for the “other shoe to drop” so to speak. T...

Filed under: Events, Children Heart HealthI am always inspired when I hear of a young person overcoming the restrictions that a congenital heart defect can place on them. As a mother of a child with a heart defect, I often experience those niggling questions of, "Will my child truly lead a normal life? Will this unfortunate bit of misdirected body tissue stop him from pursuing his dreams?"Young MacKinzie Kline, just 15 years old, has not allowed her defect to mar her dreams. Last week she participated in an LPGA golf tour event in Charleston, North Carolina. Kline received permission to ride in a golf cart during the competition, a huge decision for the event organizers, because she has difficulty breathing and walking long distances. Kline is an inspiration for both children and parents o...

So last week I took a hike up Little Devil's Tower in SoDak. It isn't very big as mountains go. Quite a bit smaller than Harney Peak which we climbed a couple of years ago when we were out there. And, which was our destination again this year. But things happen. Things like snow storms. Yeah even in late May. It wasn't expected. And we weren't prepared. Should have been. But weren't. So we looked at the empty parking lot at the trail head for Harney and decided to hike something that had a little less distance to it in case the clouds that were hovering in the distance and looked a lot more threatening than the ones we were being picked on by, decided to dump something much more substantial. Because you don't want to be blindsided miles up a mountain path without the right supplies. You do...

The question is being asked Why are you involved with Relay For Life? So I thought this would be a good time to answer that question. It isn't an easy answer, however.I first got involved with Relay For Life back in 2002. I read about it in my local paper. It caught my eye because my husband, Keith was still recovering from a brain tumor that had been surgically removed the year before at Mayo in Rochester, or technically, at St. Mary's hospital there. We joined the local Hospital Relay team and thought it was a pretty fun time, as well as a very moving and inspirational experience for the survivors during the luminaria ceremony after dark. The next year we created our own family and friends team, Keith's Brain Trust, which we've continued on with every year. The team has continued on, but ...
