The next generation of insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology is coming.Medtronic's Paradigm Veo was approved in Europe two years ago and was recently updated with a more accurate and reliable sensor. The insulin pump uses a CGM to automatically suspend when you are going low. Their studies have shown that this has a real impact on the frequency and intensity of severe low blood sugars. The Veo technology will likely arrive in the USA in 18 to 36 months. The Animas Vibe, an insulin pump with a built-in DexCom CGM, was just approved in Europe and will be submitted to the FDA for approval later this year. It uses a new generation DexCom sensor.Insulet has sought approval from the FDA for it's next generation OmniPod, a tubeless insulin pump. The new pods are 1/3 small...

I don't complain about the Omnipod, I love it! I don't have issues with the pod or the pump. I hate calling tech support for a replacement pod. I am always asked "20 questions"; it irks me. I've been on the darn thing since May 2008. If I don't know what I am doing by now, shoot me! So here's the deal:Monday time to change my pod. I grabbed my Pod, cleaned the site, filled the pod, primed, pinched skin, placed the pod on my stomach and let the basal rate flow. I walked out of the bathroom and less than a minute later my Pod alarmed. *PEEEEP* I called Insulet's tech support. Here is a portion of what my call was like:Me: "Hello! I am calling because my Pod failed less than a minute after I changed it."Tech Support: "Can I get your name?'Me: "My name ...

WARNING: This is a 2 part blog post. The story is too long for one:)

Tales of Tricare and Insulet's __ _____(You fill in the blank)
I received a call from Insulet informing me my shipment of Pod's would be delivered in a couple of weeks. I was excited. I never used the auto shipment before. I called a week before my shipment was due. I wanted to double triple check with Insulet to make sure my 3 month supply of Pods would be shipping out. I spoke to a new CSR (customer service rep). She said she didn't have my referral on file. I let her know Tricare mailed me a copy and sent an e-mail notification stating my order was approved. The CSR asked me to fax her copy. I let her know I was driving but she cou...

New OmniPod Color PDM: A First Look

The folks at Insulet have very generously shipped me out an advance unit of their new color PDM. (I guess they just knew I’d be first on the upgrade list, and wouldn’t stop pestering them ’til I got one pronto.) I fired mine up last Wednesday afternoon, and have been happily playing with it since. [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

We knew it was coming, but Insulet Corp. has been very tight-lipped about their new color-screen PDM (controller unit) for the OmniPod wireless pumping system. Well, off a tip from a reader I’ve discovered the new unit is available for pre-order starting today — and it’s looking good.
Reader Eric R. writes:

Insulet Corp., makers of the OmniPod tubeless insulin pump system, is now also offering a low-cost switch option to users of the discontinued Cozmo pump:
For a limited time, Cozmo users will be able to start on OmniPod for as little as $49.99. This offer includes an OmniPod Starter kit and a one-month supply of Pods. [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

I was as surprised as the rest of you to hear earlier this week that Smiths Medical is killing off the Cozmo insulin pump. Although I guess we should’ve seen it coming. Heck, the economy is in bad shape, and companies everywhere are cutting their loses. {So sorry for the layoffs, my friend [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)
