One of my favorite things: when I read a book that transforms the way I see the world, or the way I see the possibilities of writing.
Another one of my favorite things: when I convince someone to read one of those books, and he or she loves it as much I do.
So keeping that in mind, here’s a short list of books that transformed the way I see the world. I could go on for pages, but here’s a start, and if you’re at your bookstore or the library, check these out…

1. Christopher Alexander, A Pattern Language. I’ve never been interested in interior design or architecture, but this book taught me how to be aware of why certain spaces are pleasing — or not. I think about it all the time.
2. Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics. I’ve never been interested i...

Almost Invisible Mirrored Tree House: Coolest Thing We've Seen Today

Architectural firm Tham & Videgard has successfully built a beautiful, mirrored, environmentally-friendly, and practically invisible tree house hotel in Sweden, and, as Liz Lemon says on 30 Rock: We “want to go to there.” The Wonder Woman-esque box (six units hover inconspicuously high among the trees) is 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and is made from sustainable wood, with radiant heat flooring, and an eco-friendly incinerating toilet. Plus, as you see, it reflects everything. (But don’t get your feathers ruffled; the architects made sure birds won’t hit it.) And no snowmobiling allowed – wilderness walks only. No word on how the hell you get up there, though. Still, we’d like to book an invisible box for the weekend, please.

A Compelling Government Interest in… Fabulous Drapes!

Libertarians often disagree with their non-libby friends about the need for government-mandated occupational licensing in fields like medicine. The idea behind such licensing is that the government has a compelling interest in protecting citizens and that licensing actually achieves that end. The evidence is not as cut and dried on the latter point as many people assume, but at least there’s enough meat there to warrant a discussion.
Whatever you think about occupational licensing in the context of medicine, there’s one field where the government’s “compelling interest” — and ability to successfully execute on it – is particularly hard to defend: interior design.
In three U.S. states, government officials are, right now, “protecting&#82...

Do high ceilings help thinking?

High ceilings spur creative thinking, according to a recent study which did get me thinking about this: Charlie’s middle school classroom has a much lower ceiling than last year’s elementary school classroom last year, which was in a different building in a different part of our town. And, while his room last year had a row of windows that looked out to a playground and trees, this year’s room is on the far side of a corridor. There are windows, but they look out onto a hallway.
Lower ceilings and a lack of outside-looking windows aren’t the reason that Charlie’s transition to middle school has had its downs and ups and plateaus. But a little more light maybe, of a natural kind………
