Yesterday morning I wrote about learning how many other cancer survivors are out there with second and third cancers. Then after going to the grocery store and gardening I needed to rest my back, I decided to read my latest issue of Cure Magazine. (A note about Cure, if you have/had cancer and don't read it you should. It explains new advances and information about cancer in easily understood language that doesn't talk down to you and covers real issues.)Its latest issue covers three topics which are near and dear to my heart.- Use of radioactive iodine in treating thyroid cancer particularly when treating those under 18. I was 19 so I think I can be included in this article considering my medical history. The article states: "Radioactive iodine should generally be prescribed for those at ...

Back in the dark ages of the late 1970's through the early 1980's, there were approximately 10,000 cases of thyroid cancer annually in the US. More cases are in women than men and it did occur in teenagers as well as older adults. It included me in 1981. Its an isolating disease. I felt alone. Then in 1984 I had a benign breast tumor. Then in May 2007 I had breast cancer. Then in December 2007, I had another benign breast tumor. Now it turns out, there are lots of people out there like me. Finally there has been a study about people like me - 'Childhood Cancer Survivors At High Risk for Multiple Tumors as They Age'. The Childhood Cancer Survivor study "was launched in 1994 to identify the challenges facing childhood cancer survivors and to develop new methods to ease or prevent late effect...

Even though government experts consider some low-level radiation exposure like x-rays, cat scans, mammograms, etc, as safe, new data suggests that it may not be true (1). This is especially important now, when we are all exposed to low dose radiation from Japan’s nuclear power plant disaster. But why is low-dose radiation is considered dangerous in the first place?

Radiation, even at low doses, causes free radical formation, especially – OH free radical from water. It reacts with the part of DNA called guanine to form 8 — hydroxyguanin, which is the marker of carcinogenesis. You’d rather not have this process started at all in your body because carcinogenesis may lead to cancer.
Because carcinogenesis is believed to be caused by free radicals, it can...

Myth Buster: Seafood Allergies Do Not Increase Risk Of Allergies To CT Contrast Dyes

It is a prevalent belief out in the medical (and lay public) community that patients with iodine or seafood allergy can not receive contrast when undergoing certain radiological tests like CT or MRI scans. The concern is that contrast contains minute amounts of free iodide and as such, IV administration of this material puts the patient at risk of a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.
Contrast is often given in these tests as it traces out bloodflow enabling the physician to see organ and mass architecture much more clearly allowing for improved accuracy in seeing anything abnormal.
Well… rest assured that patients with iodine and seafood allergy CAN receive contrast without any significant increased risk of an allergic reaction as compared to other allergies.

A run on Iodine Tablets has occurred since the earthquake and tsunami in Japan due to concern about radiation exposure from damaged nuclear power plants. Japan's coastline, and many other coastlines, including the California coastline, is situated in the "ring of fire" area of the Pacific Ocean, with greater potential for earthquakes than many other places due to tectonic plate movement under the ocean and faults on land. The damage to the nuclear power plants and release of radiation that has resulted has lead to fear all the way to the coast of California. Sellers of Iodine Tablets have done well, no doubt, as a result, as many fear exposure to the negative affects of radiation. In some cases, especially in Japan, the concern is valid, here in the US in California where many have been bu...

The Royal Society of Chemistry is warning against panic buying of potassium iodide tablets as a protective agent against exposure to radioactive iodine. It also cautioning cautioned against scaremongering regarding the potential effect of explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant, saying that any comparisons with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster are unfounded.
Radioactive iodine (I-131) forms as a by-product in many nuclear reactors.
But, iodine itself is an essential constituent of a healthy diet in tiny amounts as it forms a component of thyroid hormones. The element is is absorbed by the human body into the bloodstream where it is taken up by the thyroid and incorporated into these hormones. Exposure to a radioactive isotope of iodine, and subsequent concentration in the thyroid, can therefo...

One of the most abundant substances in the cloud of radioactive steam released by a failing nuclear power plant is iodine-131 — a radioactive form of the element iodine that is found throughout nature. Iodine-131 poses a special health risk because of its cancer-causing effect on the thyroid gland.
The small, butterfly-shaped thyroid sits just below the voice box. From this perch, it controls how fast every cell in the body changes food into energy. The gland’s main product, thyroid hormone, governs the function of the digestive tract, brain, heart, nerves, muscles, bones, skin, and more.
Iodine is a key ingredient that goes into making thyroid hormone. We get this element from ocean-caught or ocean-farmed fish and shellfish, milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and fruits and vegetables gr...

In treatment for thyroid cancer, patients are often given a dose of radioactive iodine which will dissolve any thyroid cancer cells. But as you swallow radiation, it is then released from your body in its normal processes - sweat, saliva, urine - over the next few days. Now a days, patients are released from the hospital the same day and told to stay away from pregnant women and small children, sleep alone, and not share food or drink for a few days. Apparently before 1997 the NRC mandated hospital stays during radiation decay.I don't remember this part. I don't recall being hospitalized for radiation. I think I was given radioactive iodine and sent home. My brain is a sieve but you would think I would remember that. But the problem now a days, is patients who don't live near their hospita...

How ironic. Iodized salt was introduced in the 1920s as a way to prevent iodine deficiency. It worked! But now, the American Thyroid Association is worried that if the sodium police get their way and people really start cutting back on salt, thyroid problems and birth defects could be an unintended consequence.

Your body needs iodine in order to produce thyroid hormone. Iodine deficiency is especially dangerous (and especially common) during pregnancy, when it can cause problems with the infant's neural development and lead to mental retardation. Some researchers are investigating whether low iodine levels during pregnancy might increase the risk of ADHD.

Sodium is intake up but iodine intake is down

Iodized salt is the primary source of iodine in the American diet. But even tho...

I finally found looked hard enough to find some great recommendations, solidly based on science. And some mathematical formulas for calculating the dose of radiation I am emitting at any given moment after I receive my pill. I've received criticism from other cancer patients for choosing to stay away from home so long after my treatment and prior scans. That criticism makes it hard for me to stay away, because, believe me, I would prefer to be at home with my kids if I really believed it to be safe. I also think that criticism stems from the lackadaisical approach to nuclear safety our country has recently taken in order to eliminate in-patient management of patients post-radioactive iod...

Well, not so much to be taught by him, as to have him share intriguing insights and amazing adventures from his work in Papua New Guinea. Professor Pharoah’s mission, one that he enthusiastically embraced, was to confirm the cause of endemic cretinism:
Because endemic goitre is attributable to iodine deficiency and endemic cretinism is found only in areas where there is endemic goitre, it was hypothesised that endemic cretinism was also attributable to iodine deficiency. However, there was conflicting evidence concerning the hypothesis whether or not iodine deficiency was the cause of both endemic cretinism and endemic goitre.

When you get a chance take a look at the link above regarding iodine deficiency. Dr. Brownstein is a good friend and fellow practitioner of a mentor or mine in Michigan. He has written a really good short synopsis of iodine deficiency. I treat patients that have that have been experiencing female health/hormone problems, increased speed of aging of body tissues and cystic breasts, constipation, exhaustion, arrhythmia to name just a few. Some would go as far as to cite any cystic tissue in the body as being deficient of iodine. If you need more information on how to perform a simple check for iodine need in the body just call our office and we will help you get the information you need.
