By George Scoville
A bombing campaign by either Israel or the United States would rally the Iranian people to support an otherwise unpopular and incompetent regime.
What else will it take to rally the so-called fiscal hawks to the cause of reducing spending, balancing the budget, and averting national bankruptcy?
Senator Franken’s Pay for War Resolution is a superficially a step in the right direction; but when it comes to war, the Senate could probably easily rally a 60-vote supermajority to override any offset requirements.
It should be easy to rally around Paul Ryan’s Medicare choice plan, since seniors will lose benefits in the long run anyway.
Tax reform proposals are rallying back on both sides of the aisle–will any of them stick?

By Daniel GriswoldIn a speech today at Georgetown University, President Obama called for a goal of cutting America’s oil imports by one-third within a decade. Like all efforts to wean Americans from big, bad imports, such a policy will mean we will all pay more than we need to for the energy that helps to power our economy.
I’ll leave it to my able Cato colleagues to dissect the president’s proposal in terms of energy policy, but it terms of trade policy, this is about as bad as it gets.
We Americans benefit tremendously from our relatively free trade in petroleum products. Like all forms of trade, the importation of oil produced abroad allows us to acquire it at a price far lower than we would pay if we had to rely more heavily on domestic oil supplies.
The money we save buying oil ...

The delight that so many felt to see protesters in Iran using social media has given way to delight about the use of Facebook to organize for freedom in Egypt. But this serial enthusiasm omits that the "Twitter revolution" in Iran did not succeed. The fiercest skeptics even suggest that the tweeting during Iran's suppressed uprising was mostly Iranian ex-pats goosing excitable westerners and not any organizing force within Iran itself. Coming to terms with the Internet, dictatorships are learning to use it for surveillance and control...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Mobs and Democracy: The Facebook-Twitter-YouTube Revolution.
You may think you’ve seen this movie before. Just two summers ago, in fact, in Iran. Never say never, but I’m saying never. You’ve never seen anything like what is unfolding today in Egypt.
Just when it seemed humankind was doomed (pick your poison: pandemic, climate change, famine, drought, nuclear war) up pops Tunisia and Egypt. Overnight, it seems, the world has entered a new era. As The New York Times put it:
It was a spectacle that would have been unthinkable less than two decades ago, when Middle Eastern governments strictly censored any subversive images. Now, it seems, all revolutions are televised.

By Justin LoganI was privileged last night to get an advance look at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ new study on public opinion. I was struck by several things.
First, the report reflects a strong desire to get our own house in order. Asked the question whether it “is more important at this time for the United States to fix problems at home or address challenges to the United States from abroad,” a stunning 91 percent selected the former, with only 9 percent pointing to the latter. (In 2008 the numbers were 82-17.)
That said, there is not as much appetite for cutting the defense budget as I would like to see:
When asked whether defense spending should be expanded, kept about the same, or cut back, 43 percent of Americans prefer to keep spending about the sam...

By Malou InnocentI have a piece in the latest issue of Foreign Service Journal that details the ongoing clash of competing strategic interests among the United States, Pakistan, India, Iran, and other regional powers in Afghanistan . It’s a point I’ve belabored in the past (see here, here, here, and here, for example), yet it remains an understated problem in Washington’s Central and South Asia policy.
Iranian Daily Thinks Carla Bruni "Deserves To Die"

The Kayhan daily, a state-run Iranian newspaper, published an article on Saturday calling Carla Bruni-Sarkozy a “prostitute” who had “kicked up a human rights fuss,” in response to France’s First Lady’s public support of an Iranian woman who has been sentenced to death for adultery.
Iran’s foreign ministry asked that the newspaper refrain from insulting foreign dignitaries, but the paper’s message hasn’t changed: On Tuesday, it again reiterated the statement and added that Bruni “deserves to die”.
The paper deems that, because Bruni has admitted to her own affairs in the past, she deserves a sentence similar to the one of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman she was defending.
Wow, Iran. Just wow.

By Juan Carlos HidalgoBy now the name of Yoani Sánchez has become common currency for those who follow Cuba. Through the use of New Media (blog, Twitter and YouTube) Yoani has challenged the Castro regime in a way that various U.S. government-sponsored efforts have failed to do before, earning the respect and tacit admiration of even those who continue to sympathize with the Cuban regime. As my colleague Ian Vásquez put it a few months ago, Yoani keeps speaking truth to power.
Although she’s a remarkable individual, Yoani is not alone in fighting repression with technology. Other bloggers are making their voice heard, and that makes the Castro dictatorship nervous. As Yoani wrote in a paper recently published by Cato, despite the many difficulties and costs that regular Cubans face ...

Let’s face it: The Middle East is a dangerous place to be if you’re a woman. Just last week we learned about innocent women locked up in an Afghanistan prison for fabricated crimes, and today we read on The Huffington Post about an Iranian mother of two who could be stoned to death at any moment.
Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani was accused of adultery in 2006 and received a punishment of 99 lashes. Her case was then re-opened, and she was put on trial for the alleged murder of her husband. Even though she was acquitted, the judge handed down her death penalty order – even though there was no evidence.
Last week, Amnesty International called for Iran to halt all executions, but the International Committee Against Stoning and the Death Penalty says tha...

At least you’ve got to give them credit for going after the big guys! The Journal notes, “A number of countries in the Islamic world, including Iran and Saudi Arabia, have banned Internet content in the past for being sacrilegious. But those countries have authoritarian governments that closely monitor the Internet and the media.” Of course, it’s not just Islamic countries that try to protect their citizens — or subjects — from dissenting thoughts.
By Malou InnocentIn this video, David Boaz makes an excellent case for tamping down our overblown perception of Iran.

In the clip, Boaz argues persuasively that far from being suicidal, the track record of Iranian behavior shows pragmatism and calculating temperament when attempting to advance its interests in the region. Thus, rather than assessing Iran based on their leaders’ repulsive and provocative rhetoric, U.S. officials should deduce future Iranian intentions based on how it has reacted when confronted with overwhelming force. While no one can predict the future, regional experts—not hawkish, misinformed policy analysts or neo-conservative ideologues who advocate regime change—insist that the clerical regime has valued self-preservation and in the future can be deter...

By Cato EditorsAkbar Ganji, an Iranian writer and journalist who spent six years in a Tehran prison for advocating a secular democracy and exposing government involvement in the assassination of individuals who opposed Iran’s theocratic regime, has been named the 2010 winner of the Cato Institute’s Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty.
Ganji may be best known for a 1999 series of articles investigating the Chain Murders of Iran, which left five dissident intellectuals dead. Later published in the book, The Dungeon of Ghosts, his articles tied the killings to senior clerics and other officials in the Iran government, including former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Ganji was arrested for spreading propaganda against the Islamic system and “damaging national ...

The earliest available photos of me were taken when I was five months old, just after I was adopted. I have dark hair and freakishly large eyes that seem far too big for my face, like a Japanese anime character. In fact, they’re so big and dark that the rest of my facial features seem almost invisible. All you see are eyes.
“Alien baby!” shrieks my friend Clare, spotting one of the photos on the wall of my grandmother’s house. “Look at your eyes!” She puffs out her cheeks and opens her eyes as wide as possible, and laughs. It’s 2003, and Clare has decided that my native Alabama would be more anthropologically interesting than her native U.K. for the Christmas hol...

By Justin LoganI regret not remembering where I found this and therefore not being able to thank the source for the link, but Scientific American writes about research on “sacred values” and negotiations. Describing “sacred values,” SciAm writes that when an object becomes sacred, it “becomes worthy of boundless reverence, commitment, and protection. As diverse as people are in ascribing sacred status to possessions, they are equally varied in which values they consider sacred, a diversity that can breed substantial conflict. The abortion debate, for example, often presents a divide between those who consider woman’s ‘right to choose’ sacred versus those who consider a fetus’ ‘right to life’ sacred.”

[Update at end]
In post-religious, secularized Western countries, the answer to the title question tends to devolve to "nothing" beyond the self and its interests. Western elites are fond of instructing their inferiors to sacrifice for their Utopian ideal of the moment but sacrificing one's life for the "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" for others is typically seen as the province of less well educated, less sophisticated, non-members of the elite. America still has enough young people who value what this country has to offer that they are willing to put their lives on the line for us, but Europe has long since surrendered to the progressive forces of history and eschews self-defence of their ideals. For Western elites, people who...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
ندا آقا سلطان Neda Agha-Soltan 1982-2009
In Farsi her name means “voice.” Almost instantaneously, screengrabs of 26-year-old student Neda Agha-Soltan, shot through the heart on June 20, 2009, by the Iranian regime’s hired guns, became the face of a movement.
So powerful was the 40-second video of Neda dying before our eyes, the regime tried to denounce it as a fake. When that didn’t work, they blamed Neda’s death on unarmed protesters and the CIA.
The George Polk Award, named for a CBS reporter who died covering the Greek civil war, has for the first time in its 61-year history gone to an anonymous bystander who filmed Neda’s rapid decline from gravely wounded to death. The video wound up with the Gu...

By Christopher PrebleLast evening on FoxNews, host Bret Baier reported that the Iranians had launched a rocket carrying ”a mouse, two turtles, and a can of worms” into space. He asked the panelists to speculate on the implications.
Charles Krauthammer inveighed “if you can put a mouse into space, you can put a nuke in New York, in principle.” Given that they are clearly developing the technological capabilities that would allow them to nuke New York, Krauthammer concluded, “our only hope on the nuclear issue or any other is a revolution and to help that revolution ought to be our task.”
Well.

By Justin LoganThe Washington policy establishment is now pulsing with excitement over news that the intelligence community (IC) is revising its 2007 statement that “We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program1; we also assess with moderate-to-high confidence that Tehran at a minimum is keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons” and that this halt “lasted at least several years.”
Funny story: The day the NIE came out, Ted Carpenter and I were arriving in Los Angeles to give at talk at the LA World Affairs Council on Iran. Immediately on our deplaning, the questions started coming: “What do you think about the NIE? How does this change things?” “What NIE?” I asked.
So amid our last ...

By Doug BandowRemember when President George W. Bush was pushing war for democracy. Excited neoconservatives promised that a new wave of democratization was about to roll through the Middle East, sweeping out authoritarian and anti-American regimes.
Oops.
Reports the Washington Times:
The most significant finding of the latest report is the decline in freedom in the Middle East, [Arch Puddington] said.
Three countries — Jordan, Yemen and Bahrain — were reclassified from “partly free” to “not free,” and freedoms declined in Morocco and Iran.

By Doug BandowMore demonstrations and more deaths in Tehran over the weekend. It’s a nasty situation and we should offer hopes and prayers for those fighting for a free Iran.
Rouzbeh and Trita Parsi, with the European Institute for Security Studies and National Iranian American Council, respectively, speculate on how close Iran might be to the brink:
With the government growing increasingly desperate—and violent—the new clashes on the streets in Iran may very well prove to be the breaking point of the regime. If so, it shows that the Iranian theocracy ultimately fell on its own sword. It didn’t come to an end due to the efforts of exiled opposition groups or the regime change schemes of Washington’s neo-conservatives. Rather, the Iranian people are the main charact...

“If we do nothing, I can guarantee you that within a decade, a communist Chinese regime that hates democracy and sees America as its primary enemy will dominate the tiny country of Panama, and thus dominate the Panama Canal, one of the world‘s most important strategic points.“
—Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), Dec. 7, 1999

Rohrabacher made this alarming prediction during a debate on the U.S. handover of the Panama Canal. His fellow hawk, retired Adm.
BOB HERBERT writes in the New York Times: "The air is filled with obsessive self-satisfied rhetoric about supporting the troops, giving them everything they need and not letting them down. But that rhetoric is as hollow as a jazzman’s drum because the overwhelming majority of Americans have no desire at all to share in the sacrifices that the service members and their families are making. Most Americans do not want to serve in the wars, do not want to give up their precious time to do volunteer work that would aid the nation’s warriors and their families, do not even want to fork over the taxes that are needed to pay for the wars.To say that this is a national disgrace is to wallow in the shallowest understatement. The nation will always give lip-service to support for the troops, but ...

Political repression is old news. Thuggish regimes have been holding their citizens prisoner for centuries. But Iran’s government now is borrowing an innovative Soviet and Nazi tactic: targeting family members of dissenters, even those living in the U.S.
Reports the Wall Street Journal:
His first impulse was to dismiss the ominous email as a prank, says a young Iranian-American named Koosha. It warned the 29-year-old engineering student that his relatives in Tehran would be harmed if he didn’t stop criticizing Iran on Facebook.

Two days later, his mom called. Security agents had arrested his father in his home in Tehran and threatened him by saying his son could no longer safely return to Iran.

The Hill’s Congress blog has a regular series that provides policy experts a forum to discuss current topics of the day. This week, the editors posed this question:
President Obama has taken a very different approach to diplomacy than President Bush. Does the new approach serve or undermine long-term U.S. interests?
My response:
What “very different approach?” Sure, President Bush implicitly scorned diplomacy in favor of toughness, particularly in his first term. But he sought UN Security Council authorization for tougher measures against Iraq; a truly unilateral approach would have bombed first and asked questions later. By the same token, President Obama has staffed his administration with people, including chief diplomat Hillary Clinton and UN Ambassador Susan Rice, who favore...

Last night, Chris Matthews presided over an odd, staccato interview with AEI’s Michael Rubin and Time magazine’s Bob Baer that was enough to make one feel sorry for the interviewees. Matthews was wildly whipping questions at Rubin and Baer, but they both did an admirable job returning Matthews’ volleys.
One interesting topic that came up was whether the Obama administration should discourage Israel from attacking Iran. Rubin and Baer agreed that at this point an Israeli attack would be unhelpful and should be discouraged, but Baer noted that our ability to prevent such an attack is “zero.” They agreed that the likelihood of an Israeli strike in the next year was “greater than 50-50″ and Rubin suggested that the Israeli timeline for an attack ...

The revelation last week of a second secret Iranian nuclear facility, and Iran’s test firings over the weekend of its short and medium range missiles, bring a new sense of urgency to the long-scheduled talks between Iran and the P-5 + 1 beginning on Thursday in Geneva. Many in Washington hope that a new round of tough sanctions, supported by all of the major powers including Russia and China, might finally convince the Iranians to abandon their nuclear program.
Such hopes are naive.
Even multilateral sanctions have an uneven track record, at best. It is difficult to convince a regime to reverse itself when a very high-profile initiative hangs in the balance, and Iran’s nuclear program clearly qualifies. It is particularly unrealistic given that the many years of economic and di...

Now Iran appears to be adopting the Stalinesque tactic of staging show trials, with “confessions” from the obviously brutalized accused. Reports the Wall Street Journal:
On Sunday, reaction by Iranian newspapers and Web sites to the trials of some 100 detained opposition members, including a former vice president, was polarized as some raised questions about whether their confessions were coerced.

In the meantime, the United States has allowed Iran to stall and develop their nuclear capacity despite countless United Nation’s resolutions.
Iran is blocking U.N. nuclear agency attempts to upgrade monitoring of its atomic program while advancing those activities to the stage that the country would have the means to test a weapon within six months, diplomats told The Associated Press Friday.
The diplomats emphasized that there were no indications of plans for such a nuclear test, saying it was highly unlikely Iran would risk heightened confrontation with the West—and chances of Israeli attack—by embarking on such a course.
But they said that even as Iran expands uranium enrichment, which can create fissile nuclear material, it is resisting International Atomic Energy Agency att...

For instance, Iranian cleric and blogger Mohsen Kadivar recently applied several Islamic principles to the Iranian government:
The fourth question concerns attempts by some to cite the protection of the Islamic state to justify suppressing people’s efforts to defend their own rights.
The response is that an Islamic state cannot be protected through violence.
The fifth question is about what Shari’a law says are the signs of suppr...

The U.S. is not yet out of Iraq, but American forces have pulled back from Iraqi cities. Iraq’s future increasingly is in the hands of Iraqis. And most Iraqis appear to be celebrating.
Reports the Washington Post:
This is no longer America’s war.
Iraqis danced in the streets and set off fireworks Monday in impromptu celebrations of a pivotal moment in their nation’s troubled history: Six years and three months after the March 2003 invasion, the United States on Tuesday is withdrawing its remaining combat troops from Iraq’s cities and turning over security to Iraqi police and soldiers.
While more than 130,000 U.S. troops remain in the country, patrols by heavily armed soldiers in hulking vehicles as of Wednesday will largely disappear from Baghdad, Mosul and Iraq...

The path of Neda Agha Soltan, ندا آقا .سلطان , is not well trod, but it’s clear. These days the names Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King are rolling off of everyone’s tongues. MLK and Ghandi are indeed the stars of nonviolent resistance, but a more apt comparison might be Nazi Germany’s Sophie Scholl…

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
We don’t know much about Neda Agha Soltan ندا آقا سلطان We know she was 26 years old. Some reports say she was a philosophy student. We do know that on June 20, 2009, she was watching a protest in Tehran when she was shot to death.
Because today’s world is radically different from that of the Chinese students in Tiananmen Square, we all saw Neda look right into the camera after friends lowered her to the ground. Then we saw her bleed. We saw her eyes go blank…

Grave of Neda Agha Soltan

The young woman’s name is ندا آقا .سلطان Neda Agha Soltan.
She was a 26-year-old student. She’d studied religion and philosophy, but was most interested in music and travel.
On June 20, 2009 she was watching a protest with her music teacher. At 7:05 PM she was standing on Kargar Avenue at its intersection with Khosravi and Salehi Streets.
Although initial reports implicated a sniper on top of a building, other witnesses said Neda was shot by a Basij militiaman riding a motorcycle. A few minutes later, she died.
On the video a male voice says, “Neda, don’t be afraid. Neda, don’t be afraid.” And then, “Neda, stay with me. Neda, stay with me!”

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
The protests in Iran have got me thinking about religion, a subject I usually avoid. I don’t like the label of atheist. I’d rather be defined by what I do believe in than by what I don’t.
Besides, people hate atheists. I mean hate. When a 2007 Gallup poll revealed that Americans would sooner elect a gay or lesbian president than an atheist, I thought perhaps it was time for me to stand up with my heathen brothers and sisters…

In Cairo on Thursday, President Obama asked for a “new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world,” and spoke at some length on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Cato scholar Christopher Preble comments, “At times, it sounded like a state of the union address, with a litany of promises intended to appeal to particular interest groups. …That said, I thought the president hit the essential points without overpromising.”
Preble goes on to say:
He did not ignore that which divides the United States from the world at large, and many Muslims in particular, nor was he afraid to address squarely the lies and distortions — including the implication that 9/11 never happened, or was not...

Iran has test fired a new ballistic missile, Sajjil-2, with a range of 1200 miles, far enough to hit Israel and southeastern Europe
Iran has tested a new missle today with a range that threatens Israel.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran test-fired a new advanced missile Wednesday with a range of about 1,200 miles, far enough to strike Israel, southeastern Europe and U.S. bases in the Middle East.
The announcement will not reassure the U.S. government, coming just two days after President Barack Obama declared a readiness to seek deeper international sanctions against Iran if it shunned U.S. attempts to open negotiations on its nuclear program. Obama said he expected a positive response to his outreach for opening a dialogue with Iran by the end of the year.

Interesting back story on the circumstances surrounding her arrest here. Whatever the details, it’s good news that she was released. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Richard Haass’s op ed in today’s Post is worth a read. Sure, it amounts to a well-placed advertisement for his new book, War of Necessity, War of Choice. And it’s not like Haass, current president of the Council of Foreign Relations, and former director of policy planning at the State Department, lacks for exposure. But while I would quibble with his characterization of the first Gulf War as “necessary”, it is refreshing for a man so firmly fixed in the foreign policy establishment to focus not on the United States’ supposed capacity for refashioning the global order, but rather on the limits of our power.
He urges President Obama to resist the impulse to expand our objectives in Afghanistan, and should not dedicate far more resources to the effort i...

More often than not , for a reason. This time is not coffee but game theory. The tool that some researchers use to study evolution (and more recently cancer!) started as a mathematical tool to study the politics of the cold war. Von Neumann himself was, for a while, an employee of the DoD affiliated RAND corporation.
Back to those roots, NYU’s Bruce Bueno de Mesquita delivered this TED talk in which he explains GT and how it could be used to understand the future of Iran’s nuclear policy.
In response to President Obama’s video message to the Iranian people this morning, Iranian presidential aide Aliakbar Javanfekr is quoted as saying, “The Obama administration so far has just talked. By words and talking the … problems between Iran and America cannot be solved.”
I wish we knew the reaction of Khamene’i, but I do find myself fearing that the CIA may continue its major covert operations to undermine Tehran’s clerical regime. The administration has yet to repudiate this official policy. If Obama decides to repeal it, and dialogue with Iran falls through, Bush administration officials will trumpet that their policy could have had a chance to succeed.
Obama may be in a tough spot, but history is on his side. As we witnessed in 1953 with the ...

Hoping to derail the re-election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President Obama today gave an unprecedented appeal to the Iranian people in a special video message. In it, he offers a “new beginning” of engagement to end the nearly 30 years of hostile bilateral relations.
This video comes less than a month after the administration wrote a letter to the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamene’i, who, as opposed to Ahmadinejad, truly controls the apparatus of government and has the final say on the country’s nuclear ambitions. Khamene’i sent a congratulatory letter to Obama after he won the presidency.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (R) waves to journalists as Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili stands in the background before an official meeting in Tehran July 1, 2008. Iran said on Saturday its nuclear stance had not changed and it was ready to hold talks with world major powers over its disputed nuclear program based on international regulations.
The trial balloon of a few days ago - “freeze-for-freeze” - turns out to be bull - just like all of the others. Iran will not halt uranium enrichment.
Iran’s nuclear program remains unchanged, a government spokesman Saturday, indicating that Tehran has no plans to meet a key Western demand that it stop enriching uranium.

There is a report out that says Iran will halt uranium enrichment if the West lifts international sanctions.
Iran expressed readiness to freeze its uranium enrichment program in return for lifting the international sanctions imposed on it, Israel’s Channel 2 senior analyst Ehud Ya’ari revealed Thursday evening.
He cited unnamed Western officials as the source of the new development.
In the newly formulated deal, incentives were also reportedly discussed, including rebuilding Iran’s fleet of aircraft and aiding the country with civilian nuclear technology.
According to the report, an initial six-week trial period would be implemented.
It sounds to Flap that this is a “trial baloon” for “pre-negotiations” or how to do a period leading up to full-bl...

A former head of Mossad has warned that Israel has 12 months in which to destroy Iran’s nuclear programme or risk coming under nuclear attack itself. He also hinted that Israel might have to act sooner if Barack Obama wins the US presidential election.
The United States and European Union have fiddled while the uranium centrifuges have been spinning at Natanz.
Israel will have NO choice but to bomb Iran if they do not stand down from their nuclear weapons program.

Khamenei pledged that Iran will never yield to Western pressure over its nuclear program, and it would outsmart “drunken and arrogant” Western opponents in the standoff. (September 2007)
In a shocker, Iran says if it is attacked that they will disrupt Persian Gulf Oil routes and attack neighboring states that support the attackers.
The Revolutionary Guards said Iran would impose controls on shipping in the vital Gulf oil route if Iran was attacked and warned regional states of reprisals if they took part, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Ahmadinejad said Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush’s era ‘has come to an end’ and he has failed in his goals to attack Iran and stop its nuclear program
Iran President Ahmadinejad is correct in taunting President Bush. President Bush has done NOTHING but talk about Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Barack Obama at the You Tube Democrat debate, July 23, 2007
In the furor yesterday over Barack Obama’s LATEST Pastor problem with Father Michael Pfleger, the changing of Obama’s position on meeting with Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions may have been missed.
Last July this is what Barack Obama said:
“Would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?” asked Stephen Sixta, a video producer who submitted the question for the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate.
Mr. Obama, the first candidate to respond, answered, “I would.”
But, Obama has taken heat...

President Bush, the European Union and the United Nations have been unable to contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
But, never fear, Barack Obama WILL talk to Iran President Ahmadinejad and we will be on the rim of a golden world.

John McCain Responds To Obama Saying Iran Is A “Tiny” Threat
Earlier today Senator John McCain slammed Seantor Barack Obama over remarks Obama made about Iran being a “TINY THREAT.”
The full text of McCain’s remarks is here along with Obama’s previous statement.
“They might not be a superpower, but the threat the government of Iran poses is anything but ‘tiny.’…The next President ought to understand such basic realities of international relations.”
Now, Barack Obama has fired back at McCain.
The Illinois Senator slaps back: He speaks out against McCain’s characterization of him on his Iran policy at a town hall meeting in Billings, Montana.
“You can vote for John McCain and nothing will change…or we can turn the page.”

“Before I begin my prepared remarks, I want to respond briefly to a comment Senator Obama made yesterday about the threat posed to the United States by the Government of Iran. Senator Obama claimed that the threat Iran poses to our security is “tiny” compared to the threat once posed by the former Soviet Union. Israel now believes that Iran with its uranium enrichment centrifuges spinning at Natanz will be able to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year.
The new assessment moves up Israel’s forecasts on Teheran’s nuclear program by almost a full year - from 2009 to the end of 2008. According to the new timeline, Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the middle of next year.
Iran, a senior defense official said on Tuesday, had encountered numerous technical obstacles on its way to enriching uranium but was now on track to master the technology needed to enrich uranium within six months.
Israel is also concerned that Teheran is develo...

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that sending a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf could serve as a “reminder” to Iran, but he said it is not an escalation of force.

The secret site where Iran is suspected of developing long-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching targets in Europe has been uncovered by new satellite photographs.
The imagery has pinpointed the facility from where the Iranians launched their Kavoshgar 1 “research rocket” on February 4, claiming that it was in connection with their space programme.
Analysis of the photographs taken by the Digital Globe QuickBird satellite four days after the launch has revealed a number of intriguing features that indicate to experts that it is the same site where Iran is focusing its efforts on developing a ballistic missile with a range of about 6,000km (4,000 miles).

Iran is starting work to install 6,000 new uranium-enriching centrifuges at its nuclear plant in Natanz, Ahmadinejad announced on Tuesday, according to state media.
Years of negotiations with Iran and three sets of United Nations Security Council sanctions later, Iran President Ahmadinejad announced today that Iran will be installing 6,000 new uranium enrichment centrifuges at Natanz.
Iran has begun installing 6,000 new centrifuges at its uranium enrichment plant in Natanz, state television quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying Tuesday.

Iranian technicians prepare to wash the reactor of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in 2007. The Security Council tightened UN sanctions on Iran Monday for refusing to halt nuclear fuel work as six major powers offered to resume talks with the Islamic Republic to end the standoff.
A third round of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council against Iran for their nuclear program, including continuing uranium enrichment were adopted today at the United Nations.
A prominent Revolutionary Guards commander close to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and a long list of figures involved in Iran’s nuclear program are among those the U.N. Security Council targeted Monday with sanctions.
While the two previous Security Council resolutions were aimed at top figures and well-kn...

Remember the December 2006 Iranian student protests against Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?
Iranian students have disrupted a speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a prestigious Tehran university, setting fire to his picture and heckling him.
“Some students chanted radical slogans and inflamed the atmosphere of the meeting” at the Amir Kabir University, said the semi-official Fars news agency on Monday, which is close to Ahmadinejad.
Well, Iran and Ahmadinejad strikes back today with the sentencing of one of the protesting students to one year in jail.

Chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei. Iran said it saw no legal basis for a new UN Security Council resolution over its nuclear activities after the UN atomic watchdog reported it had made progress in its probe.
If evaluation of Iran’s nuclear weapons program is left up to the IAEA and ElBaradei, Iran will soon develop BREAKOUT CAPABILITY.
In a scathing critique of El Baradei’s agenda in leading the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Danielle Pletka and Michael Rubin in today’s Wall Street Journal write about the IAEA whitewash of Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.

The long awaited IAEA report on Iran nuclear program has just been released and it details Iran’s continuing uranium enrichment and development of centrifuges.

Update:
Iran more open on atom work, bomb fears remain: IAEA

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (R) shakes hands with General Yahya Rahim Safavi — the former chief of the Revolutionary Guards — while his newly-appointed successor General Mohammad Ali Jaafari looks on during a meeting in Tehran. Khamenei pledged that Iran will never yield to Western pressure over its nuclear program, and it would outsmart “drunken and arrogant” Western opponents in the standoff. (September 2007)
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Muhammad Ali Jafari does NOT heart Israel. In a letter to Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah he wrote: “The cancerous growth Israel will soon disappear.”

Iran is pursuing uranium enrichment for peaceful electricity generation purposes and advanced ballistic technology for a space program.
Iran’s new generation of advanced centrifuges have begun processing small quantities of the gas that can be used to make the fissile core of nuclear warheads, diplomats told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

President Bush on Tuesday denounced the incident as a “provocative act.”
“It is a dangerous situation,” Bush said during a White House news conference. “They should not have done it, pure and simple. … I don’t know what their thinking was, but I’m telling you what my thinking was. Iran says Moscow could soon start supplying it with the Russian S300 missile air defence system. The announcement was made by Iran’s Defence Minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, who was speaking to the Fars news agency.
For a country that confirms they stopped their nuclear weapon development program over three years ago, Iran is unexplainably increasing their defense posture to protect what?
Could it be the CIA’s Iran NIE was WRONG?
The United States needs better intelligence and must make it clear to Russia that a resumption of Cold War surrogate development with Iran will be met with renewed American efforts to undermine the Putin dictatorship.
Stay tuned…….

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, speaks at a ceremony in Iran’s nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz, 300 kms 186 (miles) south of capital Tehran, Iran, Monday April, 9, 2007. Iran halted its nuclear weapons development program in the fall of 2003 under international pressure but is continuing to enrich uranium, which means it may still be able to develop a weapon between 2010 and 2015, senior intelligence officials said Monday, Dec. 3, 2007.
Iran halted its nuclear weapons development program in the fall of 2003 under international pressure, but is continuing to enrich uranium and could be capable of developing a weapon as early as late 2009, the U.S. intelligence community has concluded.

Machines produce uranium hexafluoride (UF6) at the uranium conversion facilities in Isfahan, Iran. Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz has called for Mohamed ElBaradei to be removed as head of the UN nuclear watchdog, saying he had turned a blind eye to archfoe Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The United States and Israel are done with El Baradei and the United Nations. The question is NOT IF but WHEN Israel with help from the United States strikes Iran’s nuclear program.
The new year?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivers a speech during a visit the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 300 kms, south of the capital Tehran, in April. Iran has built a landmark 3,000 centrifuges for uranium enrichment, Ahmadinejad announced 07 November 2007, despite international pressure to halt its atomic work.
If Ahmadinejad is to be believed, Iran NOW possesses the capability of producing a nuclear weapon within a year.
Will the United States continue to fiddle around with economic sanctions? Or will Israel ACT?

Iran and North Korea’s choice for continued negotiations to rid the world of their nuclear ambitions with the United States.
The nuclear warheads resting on ballistic missiles in silos, circling the globe in submarines or carried—sometimes mistakenly—by aircraft hail from an era when the U.S. targeted its largest foe, the U.S.S.R. and, more recently, Russia and China. Olmert to discuss Iran with Putin
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert flew to Moscow on Thursday in a surprise visit to discuss Iran’s nuclear program with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who just returned from talks with Iranian leaders in Tehran.
The two leaders also were expected to discuss an arms deal that Russia is to sign with Syria, and Russia’s role in Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking efforts.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (L) and Russian President Vladimir Putin shake hands upon Putin’s arrival in Tehran. Putin Visits Iran, Sends Warnings to US
Russian leader Vladimir Putin met his Iranian counterpart Tuesday and implicitly warned the U.S. not to use a former Soviet republic to stage an attack on Iran. He also said nations shouldn’t pursue oil pipeline projects in the area if they weren’t backed by regional powers.

Bombs Away
World powers delay Iran sanctions action
The world’s major powers agreed on Friday to delay a vote on tougher sanctions on Iran until late November at the earliest, depending on reports by the U.N. nuclear watchdog and a European Union negotiator.
The outcome was a temporary setback for the United States and France, which had sought swifter action to step up economic and political pressure on the Islamic Republic over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, which the West suspects is aimed at developing nuclear arms.
More delay and obfuscation.
Face it folks. Russia, China and Germany have too many trade ties to Iran to vote harsh economic sanctions.
Flap continues to wonder why President Bush is waiting?
“BREAKOUT CAPACITY?”

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addresses the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters, Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007.
Iran leader says nuclear issue closed
Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared Tuesday that Iran’s disputed nuclear program is closed as a political issue and said Tehran will ignore a U.N. Security Council demand imposed by “arrogant powers” to curb its nuclear program.
Instead, he told world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly that Iran has decided to pursue the monitoring of its nuclear program “through its appropriate legal path,” the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency.

Sarkozy says letting Iran go nuclear could cause war
Allowing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons could destabilize the world and lead to war, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told the United Nations on Tuesday.
In his maiden speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Sarkozy said: “There will be no peace in the world if the international community falters in the face of nuclear arms proliferation.”
Iran was entitled to nuclear power for civilian purposes, he said, “but if we allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, we would incur an unacceptable risk to stability in the region and in the world”.

Iran’s president: ‘We don’t have homosexuals’
Columbia University President Lee Bollinger excoriated Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday, going through a long list of documented actions and remarks by the firebrand Iranian leader and his government.
“Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator,” Bollinger said to applause from many of the 600 people in the room for a speech from the Iranian leader. …

Germany — a pivotal player among three European nations to rein in Iran’s nuclear program over the last two-and-a-half years through a mixture of diplomacy and sanctions supported by the United States — notified its allies last week that the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel refuses to support the imposition of any further sanctions against Iran that could be imposed by the U.N.
