Inflammatory signaling may be influential in major depressive disorder. For any condition in which inflammation is important, attention should be given to the possible role of cellular senescence, given the advent of senolytic therapies to clear these cells. Senescent cells grow in number throughout the body with age, and while never a large fraction of all cells, they energetically generate pro-inflammatory signals. Here, researchers discuss the sometimes there, sometimes not correlation between burden of senescent cells and incidence of major depressive disorder in later life. Previous studies suggested the role...

The 2023 Skin-Checking Apps Landscape: Infographic
The most useful skin-checking applications allow users to take pictures of their suspicious skin lesions, upload these pictures to a server, the images are first evaluated by an AI algorithm and the results will be later validated by a dermatologist. We introduced several already, check here or here.  Earlier we called these apps an emerging trend, and still stand by this statement. If you are looking for a signature digital health solution, these are great examples, as they: address an existing demand rely on already existing infrastructure from the patients’ side (e.g.: their mobile phones) provide ea...

Thanksgiving works: Gratitude journaling seen to lower stress and negative cognitive processes
During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people suffered extreme stress. People couldn’t work and faced financial anxiety, they felt lonely and isolated, they worried about catching a deadly disease or giving it to someone they loved, and their mental health suffered. For researcher Erin Fekete, of the University of Indianapolis, the unfolding pandemic was an opportunity to answer a longstanding question about the best way to cope in moments of suffering. forgetting my heart
When I was in college I spent a semester living in Germany and traveling around Europe. I started taking German in 9th grade, but 7 years later when I went to Germany, I still struggled with basic conversation. Many of my classmates grew up in German speaking families and they had a distinct advantage being bilingual. By the time I came back home though, I was fluent enough that I could carry on all my daily activities, eating, shopping, traveling, finances, etc in German. I was really proud of that accomplishment. When I returned though, i experienced something unusual that I haven’t heard other people talk about...

DiGA: How Germany Channeled Digital Health Apps Into Its Healthcare System
Digital health applications and solutions are increasingly becoming part of our healthcare experience. Partially because they offer fast and convenient solutions for problems arising from capacity shortages of the traditional medical systems (like skin checking apps), or because they enhance the capabilities of doctors, medical personnel, or hospitals (like sepsis watch algorithms or A.I. diagnostics models). While these apps are available in a large number of medical specialities, channelling them into state-run healthcare systems to harness the benefits on population-wide scales is challenging.  Germany’s Di...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –24th September, 2022.
This article makes the case and explains what will be required to make it happen. We hear a lot about “digital health” these days. But having a lot of data is not enough. We have to be aware of what we have, understand what it means, and act on that understanding. While the challenges are in some ways more acute in the United States because of its fragmented sys...
