Drug firm Roche pledges greater access to trials data 26 February 2013 Last updated at 18:00 Research suggests half of all clinical trials have never been published The pharmaceutical company Roche has announced that it will make more of the data from its clinical trials available to researchers. The company says it will appoint a panel of experts to evaluate and approve requests to access anonymised patient data. Roche Peels Back The Curtain On Clinical Trial Data
In response to enormous criticism over its handling of Tamiflu clinical trial data, Roche announced a new plan to increase access to such information and its approach mimics steps begun recently by GlaxoSmithKline. Specifically, Roche will work with an “independent” group of “recognized experts” to evaluate and approve requests to access patient-level data and will also support the release of case study reports for all of its licensed medicines. The move comes after Roche found itself in a heated row with researchers at the Cochrane Collaboration, who two years ago complained they were repeatedly st...

Glaxo Clashes With PhRMA Over Data Disclosure
Just how heated can the controversy over disclosing clinical trial get? One day after the US pharmaceutical industry trade group bashed the cry to release patient-level data, GlaxoSmithKline has come out in support of the notion. The support by the drugmaker comes four months after the drugmaker declared a new openness in the wake of a huge scandal over data disclosure that contributed to a $3 billion settlement with the US government last year. The ideological clash between the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and one of the world’s largest drugmakers centers on a petition drive called AllTrials ...

The Antidepressant Era: the movie
No apologies here, this article (and videos) have been lifted straight from David Healy’s excellent website. It’s important that as many people as possible have the chance to read the piece and take time to watch the film. As far as the pharmaceutical industry is concerned, I can tell you from first hand experience that the industry still believes in its own hype… do more, feel better and live longer is Glaxo’s strapline and no one in that company thinks there’s even a hint of irony in that. Now for Dr Healy’s piece: The Antidepressant Era: the movie The Antidepressant Era was written i...

Ben Goldacre in the NYT
Health Care’s Trick Coin THIS month, Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 10,000 lawsuits over an artificial hip that has been recalled because of a 40 percent failure rate within five years. Mistakes happen in medicine, but internal documents showed that executives had known of flaws with the device for some time, but had failed to make them public. It would be nice to imagine that this kind of behavior is exceptional, but in reality, the entire evidence base for medicine has been undermined by a casual lack of transparency. Sometimes this is through a failure to report concerns raised by doctors and internal analyse...

Pharmalot… Pharmalittle… The Weekend Nears
And so, another working week is about to draw to a close. Not a moment too soon, yes? This is, as you know, our treasured signal to daydream about weekend plans, especially since this will be an extended break on this side of the pond. Our agenda is, once again, rather modest. We have overdue chores and, otherwise, hope to spend time with assorted short people, catch up on some reading and, possibly, go bowling. What about you? This is a fine time to take in one of those flicks getting so much attention or simply enjoy the great outdoors. You could also enjoy one of our favorite hobbies – taking naps. Whatever you do...

CDC Reports Flu Widespread, Google Search Trends Alarming
According to new surveillance statistics released on Friday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), forty-seven states in the U.S. are now reporting widespread influenza activity [1]. The virus, which first appeared in the Southeast, has reached epidemic levels. Forty-seven states have reported widespread geographic influenza activity (i.e. incidence of flu) for the week between December 30, 2012 and January 5, 2013, and twenty-four states and New York City have reported high influenza-like illness (ILI) activity (i.e. the proportion of outpatient visits to healthcare providers for influenza-like illne...

Unnecessary Care?
It isn’t much of a case, but it created questions in my mind. A mom brings her 8 year old daughter to the hospital for a nonproductive cough. No fever. No runny nose. Just a cough. The patient had started school again this week, and so the microbiome in her nasal passages had thus begun mixing with all of the other microbiomes on school lunch tables, desks, and childrens’ shirt sleeves. The end result was that now she was coughing for a couple of days – like a majority of other children in the school. The child looked fine. I told the mother that she likely had a “head cold” and that it would ...
