Health Datapalooza: Collaboration for innovation
Health Datapalooza IV just wrapped up here in Washington, DC, and we’ve been following it closely, both as a media partner and as an interested spectator. For those of you who are just learning about it, Health Datapalooza is an annual conference featuring innovations in the use of health data and advocating for open data to spur future innovations and improve health care. It’s organized by the Health Data Consortium, a collaboration of government, non-profit, and private sector organizations working to liberate health data and put it to good use. The panels and break-out sessions were informative, and gave a g...

Prescribe Insulin? Nah! Too Much Trouble
By Jan Chait Taking insulin is too much of a burden for people with Type 2 diabetes, say 66% of primary care doctors surveyed at one hospital in Pennsylvania. People with Type 2 diabetes believe taking insulin means they've failed to manage their condition, 69% of primary care docs opined. Glycemic control is better with insulin than with oral drugs (88%) and beginning insulin earlier rather than later can prevent diabetic complications (75%). But wait! There are all these different insulin products: It's confusing (53%) to prescribe. The regimen is too complicated (60%) for people with Type 2 to understand. Insulin is too...

9 Things Not to Say to Someone with Mental Illness
Julie Fast’s friend went to the hospital for a terrible colitis attack. “It was so serious they sent her straight to the ER.” After reviewing her medical records and seeing that her friend was taking an antidepressant, the intake nurse said, “Maybe this is all in your head.” When it comes to mental illness, people say the darnedest things. As illustrated above, even medical staff can make incredibly insensitive and downright despicable remarks. Others think teasing is okay. Fast, a coach who works with partners and families of people with bipolar disorder, has heard stories of people getting teased at work. One...

“Police State” Registry System Being Set Up to Track Your Vaccination Status
Conclusion The Public Law exclusively states exactly where the data will come from – the Immunization Information Systems. Can you imagine police or sheriffs escorting the vaccine squad(s) for “non-compliant” parents? At this point, I really can’t put it past them. Consequently, once this system is completely operational, the sky is the limit. Big Brother has the capability to track more than just vaccines. You can anticipate finding just about any pharmaceutical drug mandated by the government in this same system. The question then becomes, who influences the government agencies mandating vaccines? “...

President’s 2014 Proposed Budget Calls For Increase to Overall Healthcare Spending and Major Changes to Medicare Part D
President Obama unveiled his fiscal year 2014 budget for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  The budget contained a number of notable figures and proposals, particularly given that many pieces of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) are set to go into effect in 2014.    The new budget would provide HHS a total of $967.3 billion in outlays and $80.1 billion in discretionary spending, and it includes initiatives that aim to save $361.1 billion over a decade.  MedPage Today reported that the FY 2014 budget “is larger than the $848.2 billion actually spent in FY 2012 and the $907....

The Most Dangerous Greeting Your Child May Ever Receive
Conclusion What appeared at first glance to be an act of charity on behalf of Hallmark Cards now appears to be something far more sinister. Hallmark Cards is doing more than making a tax-deductible donation to the government. In addition to recommending that parents keep up to date with their children’s vaccine schedules (because the corporate leaders will profit from increased vaccination rates), they are also heavily linked to the testing of vaccines on innocent animals and humans. Once highly regarded as an organization of love and caring, Hallmark Cards now has tarnished its trademark crown with what can only be ...

A Mobile App for Crowdsourcing Vaccine Refusal Data: A Model for Improving Drug Adherence
A mobile app for tracking vaccination refusal was recently released by the University of Iowa Computational Epidemiology Group. It's called simply "vaccine refused." According to the developers, "vaccinations are one of the most important interventions for preventing the spread of several infectious diseases. Refusing recommended vaccinations puts communities at greater risk for outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases. This app enables pediatricians and other health care providers to very quickly document and track instances of vaccine refusal."I downloaded the app and used it even though I am NOT a healthcare provider. ...

Searching for Smaug
“My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail is a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!“ Smaug, the most powerful, the most cunning, and some would even say the greatest, dragon of the Third Age, had a story steeped in mystery.  By the time an unexpected journey began, Smaug had not been seen for 150 years, but legend had it that he had laid waste to the Lonely Mountain in Erebor, and was feared as a ruthless killer. The obvious questions that ensue from this frightening tale are: Does Smaug really exist, or is he some terrifying myth? If ...

The Favor
As a medical student in the GYN clinic in El Paso, one occasionally needed both language and female standby assistance, at the same time. Occasionally like 80% of the time*. I asked one of the clinic technicians to assist me with an exam; after we were done, trying to be med student charming I said “Thank you, senorita!” She said, laughing, with the clinic staff chuckling at my discomfort, “It’s Senora, it’s only senorita until someone does you The Favor”. Education takes many forms. Sometimes when you don’t expect it or even want it. (This is however a family point of amusement, w...

Will New Changes to Autism Diagnosis Leave Your Child in the Cold While Filling Big Pharma’s Pockets?
CONCLUSION There appears to be yet another cover up going on. It is very convenient for the criteria for autism to suddenly be changed, especially when this change has the potential to lower the level of diagnosed cases of autism. It is even more convenient for this to happen when the FDA has been forced to admit that childhood vaccines still contain thimerosal, just when a new study identifies a shocking twenty parallels between mercury poisoning and autism. By shifting the goalposts, the governments can deny that the mercury in vaccines is causing a rise in autism and lower the rates being diagnosed all at the same time....

A Fight Over Antibiotics In Food-Producing Animals
As a US Senate committee holds a hearing today on renewing the Animal Drug User Fee Act, a coalition of three dozen advocacy groups is urging committee members to strengthen the law so that antibiotics given food-producing livestock do not create human resistance to the medicines. The effort comes just as two members of Congress introduced a bill to require better data on the use of antibiotics given to animals raised for human consumption. At issue is inappropriate or overuse of antibiotics, which advocates argue is contributing to a public health crisis. They contend the FDA should increase its oversight, which last summ...

US Investigates Novartis Over Alcon Sales To Iran
As if Novartis did not have enough troubles, the US Attorney in Texas is investigating the sale of Alcon eye healthcare products to various countries that are subject to US trade sanctions, according to a filing the drugmaker made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. And the filing specifically mentioned Iran in conjunction with a grand jury subpoena requesting documents dating back to 2005 (see page F-60 here). Novartis took full control of Alcon three years ago after a year-long squabble with minority shareholders. The vision care unit generated $10 billion in sales last year, a 3 percent gain, and $1.5 billio...
