Playing Chicken
You may remember the game of "chicken" from your youth. Usually a lot of testosterone in the air as two males seek to prove which one is better in hopes of winning the affection of a female. In case you forgot, perhaps this scene from the original Footloose will refresh your memory. Kevin Bacon and some other guy are trying to win the heart of the hot girl played by Lori Singer. Instead of cars, they used tractors. Seems we have an updated version of chicken, but this time it is health insurance companies vs. the Obamacare exchanges. It doesn't appear the carriers are embracing this idea with open arms. First out was i...

Healthcare Update 01-14-2013
Interesting facts about the human body. Did you know that your stomach acid can melt zinc? Your femur is 4 times stronger than concrete? In your life you make enough saliva to fill two swimming pools? More strange facts at the link. If your stomach acid can’t dissolve it, then try some Coca-Cola. Study shows that Coke is quite effective in dissolving physobezoars (balls of indigestible plant material) in the stomach. Having sex … in a hospital bed … with other people in the room … after just delivering a baby? Look for pictures on the internet – another patient’s family took the pictures and visitors ar...

Flu insurance
The good news is that I spent a chunk of the weekend replenishing the supply of Jewish penicillin for friends and family. The bad news is that the nation is in the grips of a "flu epidemic," caught shorthanded on vaccines:"We're hearing of spot shortages," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ... manufacturers already have shipped nearly 130 million doses to doctors' offices, drugstores and wholesalers, out of the 135 million doses they had planned to make for this year's flu season."Ideally, you got your shot a month or two ago, and are sitting pretty. If not, all is not (nec...

Pharmalot… Pharmalittle… Good Morning
Hello, everyone, and how are you today? Another busy morning is unfolding here on the Pharmalot corporate campus where, once again, we are hustling short people to their school houses and urging the mascots to fertilize the weeds as quickly as possible. These challenges require a strong cup of stimulation – we are back to Pumpkin Spice this week – and invite you to quaffe something along with us. Meanwhile, here is the daily roundup of tidbits. Hope you conquer the world and do stay in touch… Lilly Settles With Sisters Over DES Lawsuit (Associated Press) Glaxo Says No Plan To Spin Off ViiV For Now (Bloomb...

Health reform’s impact on my small business
Nineteen years ago, I founded a small business. At its largest, there were 12 people engaged in the work we do as strategists solving health care problems around the world. I am pleased to say that the work we’ve done has made contributions to the health of some people we know and some people we don’t.   Health-wise, it’s been remarkably clear sailing for the company. Among those who are employees or covered dependents, we’ve had no surgeries, no hospitalizations and only one ER visit (which was minor and would have been unnecessary if an urgent care center had been available and open during the night). The childb...

Health Data: Little White Lie Detector
As we bring 2012 to a close and ponder the new year ahead, many of us make resolutions to change something in our lives, and frequently, that something is our health. According to the University of Scranton Journal of Psychology, 47% of Americans make New Years Resolutions. Of those, the #1 New Years Resolution for 2012 is to lose weight. Staying fit and healthy and quitting smoking also appear in the top 10. Each of these health-related resolutions translates into quantifiable healthcare data that is, or can be, captured and measured to assist the resolution-makers in achieving their goals. Our calorie consumption and bur...

> 20 000 French MD ' s enroll in " Doctors aren ' t Pigeons " (Angry pigeons ;-) Facebook group in 2.5 days
Breaking news: At 20 000 + doctors enrolled in his FB group, the founder Dr Letertre is appearing on TV and on his way to becoming national news. For the first time in my blog-writing history, I had a hard time today getting my blogpost out, because every few minutes, the number I was writing about shifted upward. I'm writing about the latest French social media phenomenon, an open Facebook group called"Doctors are not pigeons". This group was launched October 7, 2012, not by a veterinarian ;-) but by a French plastic surgeon, Dr Letertre, from Nice, France. The name has nothing to do with the famous Finnish a...
