Friday flu shot
Yesterday many US newspapers carried front-page stories on the severity of influenza so far this season. The New York Times story began with “It is not your imagination — more people you know are sick this winter, even people who have had flu shots.” Is this really a bad flu season? Before we answer that question, I would like to complain about what the Times wrote: ‘more people you know are sick this winter, even people who have had flu shots”.  A similar sentiment appeared in a recent Forbes column “Influenza-like-illness is sweeping the country with the Centers for Disease Control &...

Virologists plan influenza H7N9 gain of function experiments
A group of virologists lead by Yoshihiro Kawaoka and Ron Fouchier have sent a letter to Nature and Science outlining the experiments they propose to carry out with influenza H7N9 virus. Avian influenza H7N9 virus has caused over 130 human infections in China with 43 fatalities. The source of the virus is not known but is suspected to be wet market poultry. No human to human transmission have been detected, and the outbreak seems to be under control. According to the authors of the letter, the virus could re-emerge this winter, and therefore additional work is needed to assess the risk of human infection. The research that ...

Flu Is Making Comeback. Here ’s What We Can Do About It
Jeffrey A. SingerAfter being nearly absent in 2020 and 2021, influenza cases are making a comeback. In fact, cases are up ‐tickingunusually late in the year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)reported on April 15 that the majority of cases are H3N2, “antigenically different from the vaccine reference viruses.” This explains why the latest flu vaccine is only16 percent effective in reducing the chances of a moderate to severe infection. As of April 15, the CDC reported at least 4.3 million flu illnesses, 42,000 hospitalizations, and 2,500 deaths from the flu.Public health experts attribu...

Beyond Vaccination: New Measures Needed to Protect Hospitals and the Public Against the Flu
By MARC M. BEUTTLER, MD Every year at this time, you hear warnings that flu season has arrived. New data from the CDC indicates the season is far from over. So, you are urged by health authorities to get a flu shot. What you may not realize is how the flu can affect the hospitals you and your loved ones rely on for care.   In January, the large urban hospital where I am an intern faced the worst flu outbreak it has ever seen. Nearly 100 staff members tested positive for the flu. Residents assigned to back-up coverage were called to work daily to supplement the dwindling ranks of the sick. Every hospital vis...

Silent Killers Amidst The Fast And The Furious
Attention to Ebola is important. The virus’s ability to easily cross regional and national borders makes it a significant threat to global health and national security. The swift and aggressive international response to the 2014 outbreak of the Ebola virus, which has killed at least 10,000 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, has been laudable and has resulted in positive outcomes, such as reduced disease transmission and strengthened global health and coordination systems. For example, staff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, including those from various divisions at the Na...

Time for Your Annual Flu Shot
By Web Team Fall is right around the corner, which means that flu season will soon be in full swing. For people with diabetes, getting this virus can lead to serious complications (such as pneumonia), so it is generally recommended that they receive a flu shot every year. And because it takes roughly two weeks for the vaccine to become effective, the ideal time to receive it is early September. To find out what locations near you are offering the flu vaccine, type your zip code into the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services flu vaccine finder. And to learn more about flu prevention and treatment, read the piece...

As if Novartis did not have enough troubles, the US Attorney in Texas is investigating the sale of Alcon eye healthcare products to various countries that are subject to US trade sanctions, according to a filing the drugmaker made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. And the filing specifically mentioned Iran in conjunction with a grand jury subpoena requesting documents dating back to 2005 (see page F-60 here).
