Barriers and potential solutions to international collaboration in neuro-oncology clinical trials: Challenges from the Australian perspective
CONCLUSIONS: Participation in international research in Australia could be improved by embedding clinical research targets into institutional funding, provision of funding for early phase studies and streamlining mutual ethics schemes.PMID:34166569 | DOI:10.1111/ajco.13606

Cognitive Impairment Associated with Cancer: A Brief Review
CONCLUSION Cognitive impairment can affect daily functioning, quality of life, and capacity to work in patients with cancer and those in remission. Consequently, cognitive assessment is now an important and necessary part of a comprehensive oncological care plan. Cancer-related cognitive impairment might be due to the direct effects of the cancer itself, nonspecific factors, or comorbid conditions that are independent of the disease and/or due to the adverse effects of the treatment or combination of treatments given for the disease. The prevalence and extent of cognitive impairment associated with cancer is recognized but...

Lessons from a systematic literature search on diagnostic DNA methylation biomarkers for colorectal cancer: how to increase research value and decrease research waste
DiscussionThis systematic literature search revealed that major requirements to develop clinically relevant diagnostic CRC DNA methylation markers are often lacking. To avoid the resulting research waste, clinical needs, intended biomarker use and independent validation should be better considered prior to study design. In addition, improved reporting quality would facilitate meta-analysis, thereby increasing level of evidence and enabling clinical translation.PMID:35584320 | DOI:10.14309/ctg.0000000000000499

Sigmoidal polyp with adenocarcinoma discovered by transvaginal three-dimensional ultrasonographic virtual colonoscopy.
Authors: Dankovcik R, Miklosova M, Vargova V, Dancova I, Contos P, Muranska S, Vernerova S, Katuchova J, Bojcikova M Abstract Adenocarcinoma of the colon represents the third most frequent cause of death from cancer, being surpassed only by lung and stomach cancer. Early screening and diagnosis of polyps are important for a good prognosis. Based on a clinical case, a novel approach is presented for screening of sigmoidal polyps and neoplasia using transvaginal 2D, 3D mode in women. This novel and simple technique can be used to visualize the sigmoid diverticula during routine gynecological examination via 3D transv...

Does Val/Val genotype of GSTP1 enzyme affects susceptibility to colorectal cancer in Saudi Arabia?
CONCLUSION: The incidence of (Val/Val) genotype in colorectal cancer cases was three folds higher than controls. This finding is not statistically significant, but it could be of clinical consequence that it may increase the risk of colorectal cancer in Saudi Arabia. Internalization property of intestinal bacteria in colon cancer and HIV/AIDS patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results present the ability of bacteria of colon cancer patients and HIV/AIDS patients to internalize HL-60 cells and normal human lymphocytes. The findings underline the potentially important function of bacteria in the induction of colorectal cancer and immunodeficiency. The particularly high detection ability of bacteria from HIV/AIDS patients to internalize normal human cells emphasizes their potentially important role in the process of AIDS. Neuro-neoplastic interrelationships in colorectal level - immunohistochemical aspect in three cases and review of the literature.
Authors: Florescu C, Istrătoaie O, Târtea GC, Pirici D, Streba CT, Cătălin B, Puiu I, Târtea EA, Caragea DC, Ghiluşi MC, Comănescu MV, Rogoveanu I, Vere CC Abstract Colorectal cancer represents a severe public health issue. Recent studies have shown the essential role played by nerves and their neurotransmitters in tumor initiation and progression. The aim of this study is to asses the expression of beta 2-adrenergic receptors (β2A) for adrenaline and noradrenaline, and the expression of M3 muscarinic receptors (M3R) for acetylcholine (neurotransmitters produced and released by sympathetic and parasympathet...

Mutations in AXIN2 gene as a risk factor for tooth agenesis and cancer: A review.
Authors: Abstract AXIN2 gene plays a crucial role in morphogenesis of craniofacial area and is essential for tooth development. AXIN2 gene is one of the most studied genes associated with tooth agenesis, the most common defect of dentition in humans. Polymorphic variants in AXIN2 gene are discussed in relation to the occurrence of the tooth agenesis but also as an indication of the risk of cancer. Mutations in AXIN2 gene were found in patients with colorectal or hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer, ovarium or lung cancer. These findings support the hypothesis that missing teeth may be a significant marker fo...

Relationship Between State-Level Google Online Search Volume and Cancer Incidence in the United States: Retrospective Study
Conclusions: Cancer incidence is correlated with online search volume at the state level. Search patterns were temporally associated with cancer awareness months and celebrity announcements. Online searches reflect public awareness. Advancing understanding of online search patterns could augment traditional epidemiologic surveillance, provide opportunities for targeted patient engagement, and allow public information campaigns to be evaluated in ways previously unable to be measured.
