Neuroprotective effects of Rhizoma Dioscoreae polysaccharides against neuronal apoptosis induced by in vitro hypoxia.
Authors: Xiang Q, Zhou WY, Hu WX, Wen Z, He D, Wu XM, Wei HP, Wang WD, Hu GZ Abstract Rhizoma Dioscoreae polysaccharides (RDPS) are the primary active ingredient of Rhizoma Dioscoreae, which is a traditional Chinese medicine. RDPS have previously been shown to scavenge reactive oxygen species, and protect against D-galactose-induced mimetic aging. The present study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of RDPS against hypoxia-induced neuronal cell apoptosis. Neuronal cells harvested from pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into groups, as follows: i) Normal control group; ii) hypoxia-induced apopto...

Immunohistochemical expression of keratins 6, 7, 8, 14, 16, 18, 19 and MNF-116 pancytokeratin in primary and metastatic melanoma of the head and neck
Conclusion metsM express keratins more than pM specifically K8, K18 and MNF-116. Keratin positivity in an undifferentiated neoplasm does not necessarily exclude the diagnosis of melanoma. Further studies using larger sample size are encouraged. Teaser This paper is a comparative study of IHCE of a panel of keratins and anti-keratin cocktail in primary and metastatic melanomas of the head and neck. It also emphasizes the potential misinterpretation of keratin positivity in undifferentiated tumors of the head and neck region.

Persistent γδ T large granular lymphocytosis in a patient with refractory pure red cell aplasia, celiac disease, and chronic hepatitis B infection
We report a case, which highlights this complex association of autoimmune and infectious diseases with large granular lymphocytosis, the overlapping spectrum of large granular lymphocyte leukemias, and γδ T cell lymphomas as well as the difficulties in the diagnosis and management of these indolent T cell lymphomas in the usual clinical settings.

Phenotyping Rh/Kell and risk of alloimmunization in haematological patients
ConclusionsThe Rh/K phenotype should be performed on all patients diagnosed with bone marrow failure, plasma cell dyscrasia and myelodysplastic syndrome in order to avoid alloimmunization. In patients with acute leukaemia and lymphoma it seems not necessary to perform it. In patients with haemoglobinopathy and myeloproliferative disorders, a larger group of patients is needed to decide its efficacy.

An endless research for 2016.
Authors: Grammaticos PC, Antoniou D Abstract In a moment of reflection of the past year of 2015, as to what we have achieved in medical research and what we need to do in the future we realize that although we have performed an enormous progress in medical research in the past we still have to do much more. In nuclear medicine there are many problems to solve like, how can we differentiate between infection, inflammation and cancer or between lymphomas and adenocarcinomas. In bone scans we need to differentiate traumatic lesions acute or chronic and lesions from another origin. Dosimetry and radiation burden is ano...

Plasmablastic lymphoma presenting as gingival growth in a HIV positive patient: A case report
This report details a case of the plasmablastic lymphoma of the gingiva in a HIV positive patient. The tumor manifested as a large mass of the right lower alveolus, causing bony destruction and tooth mobility, clinically indicative of carcinoma. Histologic examination of the lesion revealed a lymphoid tumor with a high proliferation rate containing lymphoplasmacytoid cells that were reactive to the plasma cell marker CD138 with lambda chain restriction but not to CD20 or CD79a, consistent with plasmablastic lymphoma. Recognition of this entity is important, as it represents an HIV-associated malignancy that predominately i...
