Corynebacterium macginleyi: A cause of ventilator associated pneumonia in an immunocompromised patient
Conclusion and relevance Non-diphtheria Corynebacteria usually form normal flora. If isolated, they are often dismissed as contaminants. C. macginleyi has emerged as a life-threatening nosocomial infection. Prompt identification and treatment are required. It is resistant to quinolones. Thus far, vancomycin is the preferred treatment.

CF related bowel cancer and alternative therapies?
Hi I am 12 years post lung transplant for CF. Last year, I was diagnosed with small bowel adenocarcinoma at 39, did surgery and chemo ,and five months after stopping chemo , it came back and metastasized. I had more surgery and am doing chemo again. My oncologists have never seen a CF -post-lung transplant pt with cancer before so I feel like I am playing doctor in this role as an expert of my body and doing my own research on PubMed, ect. has any other cf adult out there had bowel cancer and how did you handle it with the docs? were you post-transplant ? if so, how did you handle the chemo and immunosuppressants? Did ...

An isolated vaginal metastasis from rectal cancer
Conclusion We should keep the vagina within the field of view of pelvic MRI, which is one of the preoperative diagnostic tools for colorectal cancer. If female patients show gynecological symptoms, gynecological examination should be recommended. Isolated vaginal metastases are an indication for surgical resection, and adjuvant chemotherapy is also recommended.

EGFR-Targeted Gelatin Nanoparticles for Systemic Administration of Gemcitabine in an Orthotopic Pancreatic Cancer Model
In this study, we have formulated redox-responsive epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted type B gelatin nanoparticles as a targeted vector for systemic delivery of gemcitabine therapy in pancreatic cancer. The gelatin nanoparticles were formed by ethanol-induced desolvation process to encapsulate the bound drug. The surface of the nanoparticles was decorated either with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains to impart enhanced circulation time and with EGFR targeting peptide to confer target specificity. Our in vitro studies in Panc-1 human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells confirm that gemcitabine encapsulated...

Non-aqueous extracts of Curcuma mangga rhizomes induced cell death in human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (HT29) via induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase
Conclusions The early sign of apoptosis is consistent with the cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 checkpoint which suggests that the changes on the cell cycle lead to the induction of apoptosis in HT29.

Abstract A100: In vivo models of pancreatic cancer for translational medicine
In Germany pancreatic cancer remains a lethal disease with only 3 - 8% of patients surviving 5 years after diagnosis of the tumor (2005). Reasons for this poor situation are advanced and inoperable tumor stages at time of diagnosis and resistance to conventional therapies. One bottleneck in the development of novel therapies is the restricted availability of preclinical models with a high clinical relevance. The aim of our study was to develop well-defined in vivo xenografts derived from patient pancreatic carcinomas to address translational questions. These xenografts can be used for identification of biomarkers and cancer...

Diffuse cystic lung disease due to pulmonary metastasis of colorectal carcinoma
Publication date: Available online 6 January 2016 Source:Respiratory Medicine Case Reports Author(s): Mariano Fielli, Fabio Avila, Agustina Saino, Deborah Seimah, Marcelo Fernández Casares The diffuse cystic lung diseases (DCLDs) are a pathophysiologically heterogeneous processes characterized by the presence of multiple thin-walled, air-filled spaces within the pulmonary parenchyma. The most common causes of DCLD are lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH). DCLD develops rarely as a result of malignancy, typically secondary to metastases from peripheral sarcomas and mesenc...

Subtotal gastrectomy with conventional D2 lymphadenectomy for carcinoma of the distal gastric portion: a retrospective cohort study on clinical outcomes
Conclusions A R0 type distal subtotal gastrectomy with standard D2 lymphadenectomy for a histologically proven invasive adenocarcinoma of the distal gastric portion without distant metastasis offers acceptable postoperative morbidity and mortality, and considerably high overall cumulative 5-year survival rate. The probability of cumulative survival decreases five times when the ratio between metastatic and examined lymph nodes is > 0.25.

Diaphragmatic hernia following oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer - are we too radical?
Conclusion This case series investigated the recommended extent of hiatal dissection in oesophageal surgery. Currently there is no clear guidance available on this subject and further studies are needed to ascertain the optimum resection margin that results in the best balance of oncological parameters vs. post operative morbidity.

Case report of an anal adenocarcinoma arising from a perineal lump
We report our diagnosis and management of a patient who presented with a large perineal lump with a long-standing history of perianal fistulous disease. This was initially evaluated with a Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the diagnosis was confirmed with biopsy. Multimodality treatment with chemoradiotherapy and surgery should be offered to achieve the best outcomes.

Genomic instability in pancreatic adenocarcinoma: a new step towards precision medicine and novel therapeutic approaches.
Authors: Sahin IH, Lowery MA, Stadler ZK, Salo-Mullen E, Iacobuzio-Donahue CA, Kelsen DP, O'Reilly EM Abstract Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging cancers. Whole genome sequencing studies have been conducted to elucidate the underlying fundamentals underscoring disease behavior. Studies have identified a subgroup of pancreatic cancer patients with distinct molecular and clinical features. Genetic fingerprinting of these tumors is consistent with an unstable genome and defective DNA repair pathways, which creates unique susceptibility to agents inducing DNA damage. BRCA1/2 mutations, both germline and s...

An endless research for 2016.
Authors: Grammaticos PC, Antoniou D Abstract In a moment of reflection of the past year of 2015, as to what we have achieved in medical research and what we need to do in the future we realize that although we have performed an enormous progress in medical research in the past we still have to do much more. In nuclear medicine there are many problems to solve like, how can we differentiate between infection, inflammation and cancer or between lymphomas and adenocarcinomas. In bone scans we need to differentiate traumatic lesions acute or chronic and lesions from another origin. Dosimetry and radiation burden is ano...
