Cancer immunotherapy in veterinary medicine: current options and new developments
Publication date: Available online 13 October 2015 Source:The Veterinary Journal Author(s): Daniel Regan, Amanda Guth, Jonathan Coy, Steven Dow Excitement in the field of tumor immunotherapy is being driven by several remarkable breakthroughs in recent years. This review will cover recent advances in cancer immunotherapy, including the use of T cell checkpoint inhibitors, engineered T cells, cancer vaccines, and anti-B cell and T cell antibodies. Inhibition of T cell checkpoint molecules such as PD-1 and CTLA-4 using monoclonal antibodies has achieved notable success against advanced tumors in humans, including melan...

Therapeutic effect and apoptosis mechanism of lung-tonifying and expectorant decoction on lung cancer rats with Qi deficiency and blood stasis
Conclusions The lung-tonifying and expectorant decoction inhibits the proliferation of tumor cells by inducing and activating the cell apoptosis in treatment of lung cancer with Qi deficiency and blood stasis, probably with good clinical therapeutic effect.

Personalised and Precision Medicine in Cancer Clinical Trials: Panacea for Progress or Pandora's Box?
This article will address these competing issues, mainly from a European perspective, highlight the problems and challenges to healthcare systems and suggest potential solutions that will ensure that the cost/value rubicon is addressed in a way that allows stakeholders to work together to deliver optimal cost-effective cancer care, the benefits of which can be transferred directly to our patients.Public Health Genomics

Applied evidence-based medicine. Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of lung cancer
Conclusions Evidence-based guidelines are intended to make the process of providing up-to-date care easier. These guidelines are based on the third edition of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Lung Cancer Guidelines (LC III) and represent a systematic, extensive, comprehensive review of the literature, a structured interpretation of the data, and practical patient management recommendations. Nevertheless, implementation of the guidelines requires some effort. They cannot provide a simple recipe for treatment. Clinical judgment is needed to assess and balance the many factors that go into clinical decision-making.

Next-Generation Sequencing and Applications to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer.
Authors: Kruglyak KM, Lin E, Ong FS Abstract Cancer is a genetic disease characterized by uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Over time, somatic mutations accumulate in the cells of an individual due to replication errors, chromosome segregation errors, or DNA damage. When not caught by traditional mechanisms, these somatic mutations can lead to cellular proliferation, the hallmark of cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States, accounting for approximately 160,000 deaths annually. Five year survival rates for lung cancer remain low (<50 %) for all stages, with ev...

Treatment of brain metastases of lung cancer in the era of precision medicine.
Authors: Haughton ME, Chan MD, Watabe K, Bonomi M, Debinski W, Lesser GJ, Ruiz J Abstract Common and deadly complications of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are brain metastases (BM). BM portends a poorer prognosis with limited effective treatment options and current management strategies present several challenges from iatrogenic complications of supportive medications, optimal delivery of drug across the blood-brain barrier, and preservation of neurocognitive function. Long term side effects and survivorship issues have become more evident in the era of targeted therapy where a systemic disease is much better ...

Personalized Medicine in Respiratory Disease: Role of Proteomics
Publication date: Available online 31 December 2015 Source:Advances in Protein Chemistry and Structural Biology Author(s): V.S. Priyadharshini, Luis M. Teran Respiratory diseases affect humanity globally, with chronic lung diseases (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, among others) and lung cancer causing extensive morbidity and mortality. These conditions are highly heterogeneous and require an early diagnosis. However, initial symptoms are nonspecific, and the clinical diagnosis is made late frequently. Over the last few years, personalized medicine has emerged as a med...

A critical appraisal of YouTube as a source of information for PET/CT
Conclusions An overwhelming majority of videos that appear in a YouTube search result using ‘PET/CT’ are extraneous due to either being advertorial or being in a non-English language. Although the remaining small number of videos that specifically focused on PET/CT had accurate content, they tended to be short-snippets, older than 2-years, predominantly uploaded by health websites or medical vendors and of variable overall utility. Therefore, there is need for active engagement by radiologists and professional organizations on social media to circulate updated information about advanced imaging modalities such ...

Quantitative and textural analysis of magnetization transfer and diffusion images in the early detection of brain metastases
ConclusionsSome brain metastases may be detected earlier on MTR than conventional T2; however, the small gain is unlikely to justify “predictive” MRI.
