Proteus mirabilis: A rare cause of pneumonia, radiologically mimicking malignancy of the lung
CONCLUSION: Mass lesions suspected for malignancy should be managed with involvement of multiple medical disciplines, to ensure correct and timely diagnosis. This is to avoid miss-management.PMID:37736480 | PMC:PMC10509339 | DOI:10.1002/ccr3.7937

Non-coding RNAs in cancer immunotherapy: Predictive biomarkers and targets
CONCLUSION: This review summarises important predictive ncRNA biomarkers that were reported in cancer patients treated with different immunotherapeutic modalities, including monoclonal antibodies, small molecule inhibitors, cancer vaccines and CAR-T cells. In addition, a concise discussion on forthcoming perspectives is provided, outlining technical approaches for the optimal utilisation of immunomodulatory ncRNA biomarkers as predictive tools and therapeutic targets.PMID:37735815 | DOI:10.1002/ctm2.1425

Oncologic outcomes of segmentectomy versus lobectomy for clinical T1c radiological pure-solid non-small cell lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: In T1c radiological pure-solid non-small cell lung cancer, segmentectomy was significantly associated with worse survival and insufficient loco-regional cancer control. Lobectomy remains the standard surgical treatment; meanwhile, segmentectomy should be applied with great caution.PMID:37738593 | DOI:10.1093/icvts/ivad152

Paraneoplastic arthritis: a series of 92 cases
CONCLUSION: As a result, although PA is a rare condition, it can be confused with many rheumatological diseases. The most commonly involved joint is the knee joint, followed by the ankle and hand-wrist. Autoantibody negativity, high LDH level, and arthritis unresponsive to treatment constitute important clues for diagnosis.PMID:37738571 | DOI:10.1093/rheumatology/kead500

Large-scale whole exome sequencing studies identify two genes,CTSL and APOE, associated with lung cancer
In this study, we investigate the contribution of rare variants (RVs) (minor allele frequency <0.01) to lung cancer through two large whole exome sequencing case-control studies. We first performed gene-based association tests using a novel Bayes Factor statistic in the International Lung Cancer Consortium, the discovery study (European, 1042 cases vs. 881 controls). The top genes identified are further assessed in the UK Biobank (European, 630 cases vs. 172 864 controls), the replication study. After controlling for the false discovery rate, we found two genes, CTSL and APOE, significantly associated with lung cancer i...

Epigenetic reprogramming of a distal developmental enhancer cluster drives SOX2 overexpression in breast and lung adenocarcinoma
Nucleic Acids Res. 2023 Sep 22:gkad734. doi: 10.1093/nar/gkad734. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEnhancer reprogramming has been proposed as a key source of transcriptional dysregulation during tumorigenesis, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Here, we identify an enhancer cluster required for normal development that is aberrantly activated in breast and lung adenocarcinoma. Deletion of the SRR124-134 cluster disrupts expression of the SOX2 oncogene, dysregulates genome-wide transcription and chromatin accessibility and reduces the ability of cancer cells to form colonies in vitro. Analysis...

Choice of radiotherapy modality for the combined treatment of non-small cell lung cancer with brain metastases: whole-brain radiation therapy with simultaneous integrated boost or stereotactic radiosurgery
ConclusionIn the context of systemic drug therapy, WBRT+SIB may have better intracranial local control than SRS in NSCLC-BM patients.

CD4 levels and NSCLC metastasis: the benefits of maintaining moderate levels
CONCLUSIONS: A threshold effect is shown to exist between the peripheral blood CD4 and distant metastasis in NSCLC patients. It was revealed that the risk of distant metastasis is lower when CD4 is maintained between 32 and 44%, whereas low (< 32%) or high (> 44) levels of CD4 are associated with an increased risk of distant metastasis in NSCLC patients.PMID:37733240 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05418-2

Pneumonitis in Patients Receiving Thoracic  Radiotherapy and Osimertinib: A Multi-Institutional Study
CONCLUSIONS: Although the overall rate of pneumonitis in patients receiving TRT and osimertinib was relatively low, there was a small risk of severe toxicity. The mean lung dose was associated with an increased risk of developing pneumonitis. These findings inform decision-making for patients and providers.PMID:37732171 | PMC:PMC10507641 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtocrr.2023.100559

Subtype of SCLC Is an Intrinsic and Persistent Feature Through Systemic Treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Subtype of SCLC generally remains the same after acquiring chemotherapy resistance. Plasticity was observed with rare cases switching from NEUROD1-predominant to ASC1-predominant SCLC. Resubtyping is unnecessary for the consideration of novel subtype-specific targeted agents, except cases with NEUROD1-predominant subtype.PMID:37731627 | PMC:PMC10507151 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtocrr.2023.100561
