Is Movember synonymous with moustaches or men's health? An examination of internet search activity for prostate and testicular cancer during the campaign
ConclusionWe concluded that the Movember campaign is consistently linked in the public consciousness with novelty facial hair and only weakly associated with an awareness of prostate and testicular cancers. Whilst the funding generated by the campaign should be commended, more could be done to link the campaign and moustaches to awareness of common male cancers.

Primary research only search in Trip
I thought I would share this tip.Via twitter I was asked by @AliceMBuchan if it was possible to restrict the results to all the primary research articles.  Currently, we have four separate primary research 'sections':Key primary research (e.g. NEJM, Lancet, Evidence Updates)Controlled trialsExtended primary research - around 300 'high impact' journalsCase reports - taken from the Cases DatabaseFor secondary research we have a filter that allows a user to select 'All Secondary Evidence' but nothing similar for primary research.  While I'm not sure there is demand for an 'All Primary Research' button I've been able...

Strange results
Discussion PaperBritish Guideline on the management of asthmaDeveloping and Evaluating Methods for Record Linkage and Reducing Bias in Patient RegistriesNow, these are not specifically about immunisations but they'll all make reference to it.  For instance the top result has the following:Vaccinations1.4.2 Be aware that live vaccinations may be contraindicated in people with MS who are being treated with disease-modifying therapies. We return all the results that match the search terms (and/or synonyms).  However, our algorithm is designed to emphasise those results which are more relevant.  So, ordinarily, i...

Screening for prostate cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: Prostate cancer screening did not significantly decrease prostate cancer-specific mortality in a combined meta-analysis of five RCTs. Only one study (ERSPC) reported a 21% significant reduction of prostate cancer-specific mortality in a pre-specified subgroup of men aged 55 to 69 years. Pooled data currently demonstrates no significant reduction in prostate cancer-specific and overall mortality. Harms associated with PSA-based screening and subsequent diagnostic evaluations are frequent, and moderate in severity. Overdiagnosis and overtreatment are common and are associated with treatment-related harms. Men sh...

Hypothesis driven single nucleotide polymorphism search (HyDn-SNP-S).
Abstract The advent of complete-genome genotyping across phenotype cohorts has provided a rich source of information for bioinformaticians. However the search for SNPs from this data is generally performed on a study-by-study case without any specific hypothesis of the location for SNPs that are predictive for the phenotype. We have designed a method whereby very large SNP lists (several gigabytes in size), combining several genotyping studies at once, can be sorted and traced back to their ultimate consequence in protein structure. Given a working hypothesis, researchers are able to easily search whole genome gen...

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for gynecologic and urologic oncology: an evidence-based analysis.
Authors: Health Quality Ontario Abstract OBJECTIVE: An application was received to review the evidence on the 'The Da Vinci Surgical System' for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies (e.g. endometrial and cervical cancers). Limitations to the current standard of care include the lack of trained physicians on minimally invasive surgery and limited access to minimally invasive surgery for patients. The potential benefits of 'The Da Vinci Surgical System' include improved technical manipulation and physician uptake leading to increased surgeries, and treatment and management of these cancers. The demand for roboti...

Gene expression feature selection for prostate cancer diagnosis using a two-phase heuristic–deterministic search strategy
Here, a two-phase search strategy is proposed to identify the biomarkers in gene expression data set for the prostate cancer diagnosis. A statistical filtering method is initially employed to remove the noisiest data. In the first phase of the search strategy, a multi-objective optimisation based on the binary particle swarm optimisation algorithm tuned by a chaotic method is proposed to select the optimal subset of genes with the minimum number of genes and the maximum classification accuracy. Finally, in the second phase of the search strategy, the cache-based modification of the sequential forward floating selection alg...

In Search for risk predictors at the microscopic scenario of a negative biopsy. A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: The MS of a negative PB may include atypical small acinar proliferation, HGPIN, prostatic atrophy, inflammatory proliferative atrophy and prostatic inflammation lesions, since they all seem to be associated with the risk of PC detection in repeat PB. This review has led us to create the hypothesis that the MS of a negative PB might be a valuable and useful tool when considering repeat PB. PMID: 31109736 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Internet use after prostate cancer : Search for information and trust in disease-related information in long-term survivors.
CONCLUSIONS: Two-thirds of long-term PCa survivors are using the internet. A significant proportion expressed difficulties finding proper and reliable information. Urologists should be familiar with online resources on PCa in order to offer advice to patients and to recommend adequate information on the internet. Practically scheduling hormone therapy for prostate cancer using a mathematical model
Publication date: Available online 13 June 2019Source: Journal of Theoretical BiologyAuthor(s): Ayako Nakanishi, Yoshito HirataAbstractHormone therapy is one of the popular therapeutic methods for prostate cancer. Intermittent androgen suppression (IAS) is the method which stops and resumes hormone therapy repeatedly. The efficacy of IAS differs depending on patients; both the cases have been reported where the relapse of cancer happened and did not happen, for the patients who had undergone IAS. For the patients who cannot avoid the relapse of cancer by IAS, we should delay the relapse of cancer as later as possible. Here...

Prostate cell lines as models for biomarker discovery: Performance of current markers and the search for new biomarkers
CONCLUSIONSWhile the existing prostate cancer biomarkers and lysosomal proteins investigated here were not able to specifically differentiate between a panel of nonmalignant and prostate cancer cell lines, endosomal proteins showed some discriminatory capacity. LIMP‐2 is a critical regulator of endosome biogenesis and the increased expression observed in prostate cancer cells indicated that other endosome related proteins may also be upregulated and could be investigated as novel biomarkers. Examining the accessibility of high-quality physical activity behaviour change support freely available online for men with prostate cancer
ConclusionThere are some good-quality physical activity websites accessible to men with prostate cancer. However, they may be difficult to find and/or require updating to include complete recommendations and more behaviour change support.Implications for cancer survivorsEfforts to improve physical activity information online and strategies to direct prostate cancer survivors to higher-quality websites and support services are needed to ensure safety and efficacy.

Radical Prostatectomy and the Effect of Close Surgical Margins: Results from the SEARCH database
ConclusionsManagement of men with close surgical margins is a diagnostic challenge, with a disease course that is not entirely benign. Evaluation of other known risk factors likely provide greater prognostic value for these men and may ultimately better select those who may benefit from adjuvant therapy. This article is protected by copyright.
