Pain Predicts Function One Year Later: A Comparison across Pain Measures in a Rheumatoid Arthritis Sample.
Conclusion. Although all measures of pain predicted some functional limitations, predictive consistency varied by measure. Frequency of severe pain in the last month provided a good balance of brevity and predictive power. PMID: 27119021 [PubMed]

The Impact of Pain Invisibility on Patient-Centered Care and Empathetic Attitude in Chronic Pain Management.
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of visible physical signs on caregiver's patient-centered and empathetic behaviours in chronic pain context. Methods: A convenience sample of 21 nurses and 21 physicians participated in a descriptive study. PCC and empathy were evaluated from self-assessment and observer's assessment using a video of real patients with chronic pain. Results: The results show that caregivers have demonstrated an intraindividual variability: PCC and empathetic behaviours of the participants were significantly higher for patients who have visible signs of pain (rheumatoid ...

Prevalence, Course, and Associated Factors of Pain in the Temporomandibular Joint in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: Results of a Longitudinal Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of TMJ pain in patients with newly diagnosed RA is approximately 10% and decreases during follow-up, especially in the first year. Disease activity is a risk factor for TMJ pain in patients with newly diagnosed RA. PMID: 28738108 [PubMed - in process]

Double blind randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy of ketoprofen patch to attenuate pain during venous cannulation.
Conclusions: Application of a ketoprofen patch at the proposed site of venipuncture one hour before the attempt is effective and safe for attenuating venipuncture pain. PMID: 29372024 [PubMed]

Characteristics of patients with neuropathic pain syndromes screened by the painDETECT questionnaire and diagnosed by physician exam.
Conclusion: These exploratory findings indicate that patients with NeP across different etiologies are medically complex and experience impaired function across multiple domains. PMID: 30662281 [PubMed]

TMJ Pain and Crepitus Occur Early Whereas Dysfunction Develops Over Time in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that TMJ pain and crepitus in RA usually occur within 2 years following general symptom onset. Pain-related dysfunction and structural changes develop with time. TNF in plasma and TMJ SF are associated with this development. This makes early (clinical) recognition of pain and inflammation important, enabling early treatment to minimize later irreversible damage. PMID: 33290445 [PubMed - in process]

Assessment and management of pain in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
Abstract Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a common chronic childhood illness. Pain is the most common and distressing symptom of JIA. Pain has been found to negatively impact all aspects of functioning, including physical, social, emotional and role functions. Children with arthritis continue to experience clinically significant pain despite adequate doses of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and anti-inflammatory agents. The present article reviews the prevalence and nature of pain in JIA, the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to the pain experience, current approaches to assessing pain in this po...

Psychological Distress in Out-Patients Assessed for Chronic Pain Compared to Those with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Conclusions. This study found greater levels of psychological distress among CP individuals referred to an academic pain clinic when compared to RA patients referred to an academic rheumatology clinic. PMID: 27445623 [PubMed - in process]

(321) Role of microglia and P2X7 receptors in arthritis pain
Joint pain associated with arthritis is among the most common and debilitating chronic pain conditions. Although joint pathology is an underlying factor, some patients with severe joint degeneration report little to no pain, while others with minor joint pathology experience debilitating and unremitting pain. The discordance between pain severity and peripheral pathology of the arthritic joint suggests joint damage is not necessarily a direct predictor of ensuing chronic pain. Rather, new evidence suggests altered pain processing within the spinal cord as being a key determinant of joint pain.

Chronic Pain in Inflammatory Arthritis: Mechanisms, Metrology, and Emerging Targets-A Focus on the JAK-STAT Pathway.
Abstract Chronic pain is nowadays considered not only the mainstay symptom of rheumatic diseases but also "a disease itself." Pain is a multidimensional phenomenon, and in inflammatory arthritis, it derives from multiple mechanisms, involving both synovitis (release of a great number of cytokines) and peripheral and central pain-processing mechanisms (sensitization). In the last years, the JAK-STAT pathway has been recognized as a pivotal component both in the inflammatory process and in pain amplification in the central nervous system. This paper provides a summary on pain in inflammatory arthritis, from pathogen...

The Use of Oral Analgesics and Pain Self-Efficacy Are Independent Predictors of the Quality of Life of Individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Conclusions: The use of oral analgesics by RA patients may influence their QOL, which, in turn, may affect their feelings of self-efficacy. Various pain management strategies, including surgical treatment, may be explored for the treatment of RA. Furthermore, the PSEQ may be a prominent part of the patient's overall assessment. Creating Beauty From a Life of Chronic Pain
When I sit down to write these blogs each week, my creative self often takes me to surprising places. I’ve discovered last week’s theme of finding beauty is the beginning of a series of three blogs on beauty. It certainly surprised me to find two more blogs lurking in my mind. The more I reflected on the role of this particular quality in my own life, I realized it has many ramifications. For many of us who live with daily pain, creating beauty and participating in something beautiful has been a welcoming open door into a dark room and a way out of the pain. Naturally, when you create a beautiful photo or picture you ...
