The Spanish version of the Fibromyalgia Rapid Screening Tool: translation, validity and reliability
Conclusion. The Spanish version of the FiRST may be used as a screening tool for fibromyalgia even in those patients whose cognitive style is characterized by catastrophizing about pain and high levels of functional disability, anxiety and depression. The clinical consequences of the moderate specificity shown by this Spanish version of the FiRST are discussed.

Chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia syndrome
Abstract: Chronic widespread pain (CWP) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) overlap with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Several key tender trigger points are used to define FMS. Other symptoms reported commonly by patients with FMS include reduced pain threshold, fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, memory loss and problems with cognition, headache, migraine, diffuse abdominal pain with changes of bowel habit (irritable bowel syndrome), and urinary frequency. The pathogenesis of these syndromes is not clear, but hyperexcitability of the central and peripheral nervous systems, changes in function of pain receptors,...

How Depression Affects the Cognitive Profile of Fibromyalgia Patients
New research evaluated the effect of depression on the cognition of fibromyalgia patients, finding that these patients have a distinct cognitive profile. Researchers note that emotional symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, are essential to the cognitive performance of fibromyalgia patients and that treating these symptoms may reduce cognitive impairment...

Chronic widespread pain and fibromyalgia syndrome
(FMS) are disorders of pain regulation with central sensitization. Several tender trigger points define FMS, but now a composite of pain for>3 months affecting four of five specified body areas, and a raised widespread pain index and symptom severity scale score for – fatigue, waking unrefreshed and cognitive symptoms is used. Other symptoms commonly reported include depression, anxiety, headache, migraine, diffuse abdominal pain with changes of bowel habit (irritable bowel syndrome) and urinary frequency.

Differential Neuroplastic Changes in Fibromyalgia and Depression Indexed by Up-Regulation of Motor Cortex Inhibition and Disinhibition of the Descending Pain System: An Exploratory Study
Conclusion: These findings support the hypothesis that in FM a deteriorated function of cortical inhibition, indexed by a higher SICI parameter, a lower function of the DPMS, together with a higher level of BDNF indicate that FM has different pathological substrates from depression. They suggest that an up-regulation phenomenon of intracortical inhibitory networks associated with a disruption of the DPMS function occurs in FM. Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) and fibromyalgia (FM) present overlapped symptoms. Although the connection between these two disorders has not been elucidated yet, the disruption...

Comorbidities of self ‐reported fibromyalgia in United States adults: A cross‐sectional study from The National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC‐III)
ConclusionsParticipants with self ‐reported fibromyalgia have a higher prevalence of comorbid mental and physical disorders, and lower mean levels of mental and physical quality of life than their counterparts without fibromyalgia.SignificanceWe showed here a strong association of self ‐reported fibromyalgia with both mental and physical comorbidities. We showed that among participants with self‐reported fibromyalgia, more than 8 out of 10 had at least three other physical comorbidities, and almost half had at least three mental comorbidities. This is a cross‐sectional study using a representative sample of the US ...

Mindfulness is associated with psychological health and moderates the impact of fibromyalgia
ConclusionHigher mindfulness is associated with less pain interference, lower impact of fibromyalgia, and better psychological health and quality of life in people with fibromyalgia. Mindfulness moderates the influence of fibromyalgia impact on anxiety, suggesting mindfulness may alter how patients cope with fibromyalgia. Future studies should assess how mind-body therapies aiming to cultivate mindfulness may impact the well-being of patients with fibromyalgia.Key points• Higher mindfulness was associated with better psychological health and lower overall impact of fibromyalgia.• Mindfulness moderated the relationship ...

Personality and fibromyalgia syndrome.
CONCLUSION: No specific fibromyalgia personality is defined but it is proposed that personality is an important filter that modulates a person's response to psychological stressors. Certain personalities may facilitate translation of these stressors to physiological responses driving the fibromyalgia mechanism. PMID: 23002409 [PubMed]

The prevalence and clinical features of fibromyalgia in Chinese hospital  patients with primary headache: The survey of fibromyalgia comorbid with headache
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of fibromyalgia in mainland Chinese patients with primary headache was 6.0%. Fibromyalgia was more common in those with chronic rather than episodic headache. The most common sites of fibromyalgia pain were the neck, shoulders, and back.PMID:36651491 | DOI:10.1111/head.14443
