Severe COVID-19: understanding the role of immunity, endothelium, and coagulation in clinical practice
Resumo O SARS-CoV-2 é o responsável pela pandemia da COVID-19. O sistema imunológico é fator determinante no combate à infecção viral e, quando atua equilibrada e eficientemente, a doença é autolimitada e benigna.

COVID-19 lockdown effects on the anthropometrics, aerobic capacity, muscle function and metabolic control in children and adolescents with overweight and obesity
CONCLUSIONS: The lockdown due COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the anthropometric measurements, lipid profile, and glycemic control of overweight and obese children and adolescents.PMID:37209714 | PMC:PMC10186982 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2023.03.008

The association between body mass index and abdominal aortic aneurysm growth: a systematic review.
Abstract Diabetes, a state of relative insulin resistance, is negatively associated with both the presence and growth abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), which could suggest a protective role of obesity against AAA presence or growth. A recent meta-analysis demonstrated a trend toward a positive, though statistically non-significant, association between body mass index (BMI) and the presence of AAA. With respect to the association between obesity and AAA growth, however, the evidence had been very limited. To determine whether obesity (or BMI) is associated with AAA growth, we reviewed currently available studies wi...

Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Matrix Metalloproteinases as Markers of Metabolic Status in Non-Growth Hormone-Treated Girls With Turner Syndrome
ConclusionThe higher concentrations of BDNF and lower of MMP-2 found in girls with TS without MetS compared to healthy girls with short stature, could have a major impact on the future “natural” development of the metabolic status. Our findings need further studies.

Assessment of Associations Between Serum Lipoprotein (a) Levels and Atherosclerotic Vascular Diseases in Hungarian Patients With Familial Hypercholesterolemia Using Data Mining and Machine Learning
Conclusion: The extremely high burden of vascular disease is mainly explained by the unhealthy lifestyle of our patients (i.e., high prevalence of smoking, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity resulting in obesity and hypertension). The lack of associations between serum Lp(a) levels and atherosclerotic vascular diseases in Hungarian FH patients may be due to the high prevalence of these risk factors, that mask the deleterious effect of Lp(a).PMID:35222552 | PMC:PMC8864223 | DOI:10.3389/fgene.2022.849197

Complexity of Inflammation in the Trajectory of Vascular Disease: Interleukin 6 and Beyond
Ann Vasc Dis. 2023 Mar 25;16(1):8-16. doi: 10.3400/avd.ra.23-00003.ABSTRACTTakayasu's arteritis, first described by Dr. Mikito Takayasu in 1908, is a systemic vasculitis that mostly affects the aorta and its major branches. Although the etiology of the disease is yet unknown, genetic and environmental factors may both play a role. One hundred years after the discovery of Takayasu's arteritis, inflammation is finally widely recognized as a fundamental condition common to all vascular diseases, and clinical trials have proven the efficacy of molecularly targeted drugs that block each step of the NLRP3 inflammasome/interleuki...

Excess weight in adolescents and associated factors: data from the ERICA study
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of excessive weight among the school adolescents studied is high, with a value higher than the national average and the results of previous studies with adolescents. Its distribution is associated with different factors, which are socioeconomic, demographic, biological, and related to lifestyle, reinforcing the complexity of this condition, which deserves a broad coping approach, involving not only individual efforts but social and public ones as well.PMID:33775630 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2021.02.008
