Self-Inflicted Injuries Surge Among Tween & Early Teen Girls
By Susan Scutti, CNN (CNN) — Emergency room visits for non-fatal, self-inflicted injuries surged in recent years among US girls and young women, especially those between the ages of 10 and 14, according to a new study. However, rates of self-harm among boys and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 remained stable throughout the years 2001 through 2015, the researchers said. “Suicide is preventable,” said Melissa C. Mercado, lead author of the study published Tuesday in JAMA and a behavioral scientist at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “These findings underscore the need for the...

Worrying rise in reports of self-harm among teenage girls in UK
Conclusions This valuable study raises concerns about the large increase in rates of self-harm among young teenage girls, and the apparent inequality in both rates of self-harm and recognition of risk between areas of greater and lesser deprivation. It is also notable that alcohol or drug overdose was recorded in the majority of self-harm cases. These suggest, as the researchers rightly say, areas to target public health attention. There are though, a few points to consider: It can be difficult to distinguish between self-harm without intention of suicide and a suicide attempt. This distinction is usually made by discussin...

What Are the Health Needs of Incarcerated Youth?
Discussion In the US during 2011, ~60,000 youth were incarcerated at some time in a correctional facility. Boys are detained more than girls (86% vs 14% respectively in the US, 95% male in the United Kingdom in 2014) but girls have more health issues. There are racial and ethnic differences with 38-40% of detainees being black, 23% being Hispanic/Latino and 32% being white, and 5% other. For detained youth, 5% are for violent crimes, 22% for non-violent property crimes and the majority of the rest are for non-violent offices such as substance use. The average length of detainment is 3-4 months and unfortunately the rates o...

Ancient remedy crushes “breakthrough” depression drug
Two breakthrough treatments for depression have been making headlines over the last few weeks. One is ketamine — an illegal party drug called “Special K.” There is a legal use for it — as a heavy-duty anesthetic for horses! Although it seems to work for some severely depressed people, the doctors prescribing it have no idea how or why it works, or what the long-term effects will be for the patients who take it. What we do know is that chronic use of ketamine has been linked to cognitive impairment and bladder inflammation. Taking too high a dose causes hallucinations and temporary paralysis. A ketamine addiction c...

She chose to die so she could give birth. Now her newborn is dead, too.
The headaches began in March. The couple didn’t think much of them — until Carrie DeKlyen began vomiting. An initial scan showed a mass in her brain. More tests showed that it was a form of cancer, possibly lymphoma, but treatable. But a pathology exam revealed a more grim diagnosis. The 37-year-old mother of five from Wyoming, […]Related:Primal screams, blood and burns: What it’s like to survive a lightning strikeIvanka Trump reveals struggles with postpartum depression on ‘Dr. Oz’Could some ADHD be a type of sleep disorder?
