Male suicide risk and recovery factors: A systematic review and qualitative metasynthesis of two decades of research.
Psychological Bulletin, Vol 149(7-8), Jul-Aug 2023, 371-417; doi:10.1037/bul0000397Suicide is a gendered phenomenon, where male deaths outnumber those of women virtually everywhere in the world. Quantitative work has dominated suicide research producing important insights but only a limited understanding of why more men die by suicide. We conducted a qualitative metasynthesis and systematic review of 20 years of narratives both from men who are suicidal and from people who are bereaved by male suicide to identify putative risk and recovery factors. We identified 78 studies that encapsulated insights from over 1,695 people....

Psychoneurological symptom cluster trajectories in individuals treated for early-stage breast cancer
Conclusions and implicationsA subgroup of individuals with early-stage breast cancer experienced persistent severe PN symptoms. Future research should focus on psychosocial, biological, and disease-related characteristics of individuals in the most severe symptom group to inform preventative treatments and effective interventions.

Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Treatments for Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Diabetes Metab J. 2023 Sep 6. doi: 10.4093/dmj.2023.0018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most prevalent chronic complications of diabetes. The lifetime prevalence of DPN is thought to be >50%, and 15%-25% of patients with diabetes experience neuropathic pain, referred to as "painful DPN." Appropriate treatment of painful DPN is important because this pain contributes to a poor quality of life by causing sleep disturbance, anxiety, and depression. The basic principle for the management of painful DPN is to control hyperglycemia and other modifiable risk factors, but these...

Determinants of Depressive Symptoms, Quality of Life, Subjective Health Status and Physical Limitation in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis
This study demonstrates that nearly half of patients with systemic sclerosis probably experience depressive symptoms. The rate of patients with risk of depressive symptoms, pain and physical limitations increased during the systemic sclerosis disease process. Health-related quality of life and state of health declined, indicating the need for better interdisciplinary care for patients with systemic sclerosis.PMID:37671777 | DOI:10.2340/actadv.v103.6502

Pilates-based therapeutic exercise for pregnancy-related low back and pelvic pain: A prospective, randomized, controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Adding Pilates to usual prenatal care should be considered a promising treatment option for pregnancy-related LPP.PMID:37671372 | PMC:PMC10475913 | DOI:10.5606/tftrd.2023.11054

Personality in Chronic Headache: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: These results seem to confirm a "neurotic profile" in patients suffering from CH. The identification of the main personality traits involved in the onset and maintenance of headache disorders represents an important objective for developing psychological interventions.PMID:37671122 | PMC:PMC10477030 | DOI:10.1155/2023/6685372

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in cancer: Limitations and prospects
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2023 Sep 4:166875. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2023.166875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have long been considered to solely mediate neurotransmission. However, their widespread distribution in the human body suggests a more diverse physiological role. Additionally, the expression of nAChRs is increased in certain cancers, such as lung cancer, and has been associated with cell proliferation, epithelial-to-mesenchymal cell transition, angiogenesis and apoptosis prevention. Several compounds that interact with these receptors have been identified as po...
