Social support and community embeddedness protect against post-disaster depression among immigrants: a Vietnamese American case study
Immigrants often face increased vulnerabilities to disaster-related poor health and recovery, compared to mainstream populations. Little is known about Hurricane Harvey’s impacts among the storm affected area’s large Vietnamese American population. Our study documented diverse psychological experiences and recovery challenges 1 year post-storm among a sample of 120 Vietnamese Americans residing in the Houston, Texas area. Using linear regression modeling, we examined the association between social support and depressive symptom development among these storm-affected Vietnamese Americans. Social support encapsulating ...

Factors Associated With Increased Opioid Prescriptions Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Opioid-Na ïve Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Older age and preoperative diagnosis of depression are associated with greater opioid doses after ACLR. In addition, the vast majority of opioid prescriptions are written by orthopaedic surgeons on the day of ACLR and decreased considerably by four weeks after surgery. Patients receiving opioid prescriptions by nonorthopaedic surgeon medical providers receive significantly greater doses.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, retrospective cohort study.PMID:37645399 | PMC:PMC10461142 | DOI:10.1016/j.asmr.2023.04.023

A Systematic Review of the Interventions for Management of Pain in Patients After Spinal Cord Injury
In conclusion, several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical methods exist, which can reduce pain in patients after SCI. The type of intervention can be considered by the physician depending on the patients' preference, age, medical history, type of pain, and associated symptoms. However, more studies with greater samples and with better methodological quality should be conducted.PMID:37644939 | PMC:PMC10461890 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.42657

Clinical presentations of suicidality in relation to medical assistance in dying
CONCLUSION: It is important that mental health clinicians learn to differentiate between MAiD requests due to an ongoing and irremediable mental disorder, and MAiD requests in response to circumscribed psychological suffering that could be relieved via a change in circumstances and/or access to different treatment options amenable to the patient.PMID:37646301 | DOI:10.1111/sltb.12985

Duloxetine HCl Alleviates Asthma Symptoms by Regulating PI3K/AKT/mTOR and Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling Pathways
AbstractAsthma is an inflammatory disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, airway remodeling, and airway inflammation. In recent years, the prevalence of asthma has been increasing steadily and the pathogenesis of asthma varies from person to person. Due to poor compliance or resistance, existing drugs cannot achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Therefore, developing or screening asthma therapeutic drugs with high curative effects, low toxicity, and strong specificity is very urgent. Duloxetine HCl (DUX) is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and it was mainly used to treat depressio...

A woman in her 70s with chest pain
Case sent by Logan Stark MD, written by Pendell Meyers A woman in her 70s presented with acute chest pain. It started 10 hours prior to arrival, then had improved, then recently returned. No prior ECG was available. Here is her triage ECG:What do you think? The ECG was sent to me with no information, and I replied " OMI " .I sent this ECG to the Queen of Hearts (PMcardio OMI), and here is the verdict:V1 and V2 have abnormal STE, and V2 has a hyperacute T wave. There is reciprocal STD in II, III, and aVF. One more thing that should be mentioned: since there are only Q waves from V1 to V3, it is possible that t...

Evaluation of the correlation between depression and physical activity among older persons with osteoporosis: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionWe found that depression was negatively correlated with physical activity in older persons with osteoporosis in China. This means that the less physical activity there is, the more serious the depression status and having depression may result in reduced physical activity in older persons with osteoporosis. To better help older persons with osteoporosis, medical staff should give more attention to influencing factors of depression and physical activity.

Patients With Mental Illness May Not Receive Cancer Symptom Screening
Cancer patients with major mental illness are less likely to be screened for common cancer symptoms such as pain and fatigue than cancer patients without a major mental illness, suggests areport inPsycho-Oncology.“There is evidence that patients with [major mental illness] are at a greater risk for delayed cancer diagnosis, experience unequal standards of care, and generally poorer disease outcomes due to a constellation of patient, provider, and health care system factors,” wrote Laura E. Davis, a Ph.D. student at McGill University; Alyson Mahar, Ph.D., of ICES in Toronto; and colleagues. Routine cancer symptom screen...

Investigating the relationship between physical activity and self-reported outcomes in adults with rotator cuff related shoulder pain
CONCLUSION: A significant relationship between pain or self-reported outcomes and physical activity was not identified. Those who self-reported regularly exercising their injured shoulder had higher exercise self-efficacy than those who did not. These findings have clinical implications, suggesting that strategies to boost exercise self-efficacy may be important for older adults with rotator cuff related shoulder pain.PMID:37642369 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2023.2250438

Tailoring cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia across contexts, conditions, and individuals: What do we know, where do we go?
J Sleep Res. 2023 Aug 29:e14023. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is considered the front-line treatment for insomnia. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of CBT-I, it is necessary to consider how CBT-I may be tailored to different individuals. The purpose of the present review is to provide a summary of literature on tailoring CBT-I to different individuals and provide directions for future research. This review focused on the following domains of adaptation: (i) tailoring CBT-I components to individuals with comorbid mental or physical health cond...
