Clinical Practice Guidelines From the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB): COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma
Ann Intern Med. 2022 Aug 16. doi: 10.7326/M22-1079. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDESCRIPTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 convalescent plasma (CCP) has emerged as a potential treatment of COVID-19. However, meta-analysis data and recommendations are limited. The Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) developed clinical practice guidelines for the appropriate use of CCP.METHODS: These guidelines are based on 2 living systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating CCP from 1 January 2019 to 26 January 2022. There were 33 RCTs assessing 21 916 participants. The results were summar...

Second Phase of the NIH Preprint Pilot Launched
Today, we are pleased to announce the launch of the second phase of the NIH Preprint Pilot with the addition of more than 700 new preprint records to PubMed Central (PMC) and PubMed. This second phase expands the scope of the Pilot to include preprints resulting from all NIH-funded research. Eligible preprints are those acknowledging direct support of an NIH award or authored by NIH staff and posted to bioRxiv, medRxiv, arXiv, or Research Square, on or after January 1, 2023. NLM will automatically include the full text of the preprint (as license terms allow) and associated citation information in PMC and PubMed, respectiv...

Scoping Review on Search Queries and Social Media for Disease Surveillance: A Chronology of Innovation
Conclusions: The use of search queries and social media for disease surveillance are relatively recent phenomena (first reported in 2006). Both the tools themselves and the methodologies for exploiting them are evolving over time. While their accuracy, speed, and cost compare favorably with existing surveillance systems, the primary challenge is to refine the data signal by reducing surrounding noise. Further developments in digital disease surveillance have the potential to improve sensitivity and specificity, passively through advances in machine learning and actively through engagement of users. Adoption, even as suppor...

Supercomputing Pipelines Search for Therapeutics Against COVID-19
The urgent search for drugs to combat SARS-CoV-2 has included the use of supercomputers. The use of general-purpose graphical processing units (GPUs), massive parallelism, and new software for high-performance computing (HPC) has allowed researchers to search the vast chemical space of potential drugs faster than ever before. We developed a new drug discovery pipeline using the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to help pioneer this effort, with new platforms that incorporate GPU-accelerated simulation and allow for the virtual screening of billions of potential drug compounds in days compared to weeks o...

Google Health and Ascension Are Piloting A Cross-Platform EHR Search Tool That Helps Physicians Locate and View Patient Data, Including Clinical Laboratory Test Results
‘Care Studio’ is designed to give physicians a ‘single, centralized view’ of patients’ records that are spread among multiple disparate databases within a healthcare system Lack of interoperability between electronic health records (EHRs) has been a thorn in the side of healthcare providers—including clinical laboratorians and pathologists—who have to search multiple healthcare organizations’ databases to […] The post Google Health and Ascension Are Piloting A Cross-Platform EHR Search Tool That Helps Physicians Locate and View Patient Data, Including Clinical Laboratory Test Results appeared first on Dark Daily.

Continuous development of the semantic search engine preVIEW: from COVID-19 to long COVID
AbstractpreVIEW is a freely available semantic search engine for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-related preprint publications. Currently, it contains>43  800 documents indexed with>4000 semantic concepts, annotated automatically. During the last 2 years, the dynamic situation of the corona crisis has demanded dynamic development. Whereas new semantic concepts have been added over time —such as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of interest—the service has been also extended with several features improving the usability and user friendliness. Most importantly, the user is n...
