Diagnosis and management of nasal obstruction in the athlete: a narrative review by subgroup 6 of the IOC Consensus Group on "Acute Respiratory Illness in the Athlete"
J Sports Med Phys Fitness. 2021 Jun 22. doi: 10.23736/S0022-4707.21.12821-X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProtection of the health of the athlete is required for high level sporting performance. Acute respiratory illness is the leading cause of illness and can compromise training and competition in athletes. To date the focus on respiratory health in athletes has largely been on acute upper respiratory infections and asthma / exercise induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), while nasal conditions have received less attention. Concussion through my eyes: a qualitative study exploring concussion experiences and perceptions of male English blind footballers
CONCLUSION: Blind footballers suggested the quality and accuracy of reported concussions were impacted by lack of concussion experience, knowledge and concomitant impairment. A better understanding of concussion symptoms and injury mechanisms will improve concussion reporting for athletes with visual impairments. These athlete insights should guide future studies and para sports governing body initiatives to improve concussion reporting, diagnosis and management in para athletes.PMID:36792363 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2022-106256

Sleep and Injury Risk
Curr Sports Med Rep. 2021 Jun 1;20(6):286-290. doi: 10.1249/JSR.0000000000000849.ABSTRACTSleep has been found to have wide-ranging effects on sports performance and overall well-being. Recent research has found evidence relating chronic suboptimal sleep with the risk of musculoskeletal pain and sports injury. The amount of sleep that consistently has been found to be associated with increased risk of injury is ≤7 h of sleep, which when sustained for periods of at least 14 d has been associated with 1.7 times greater risk of musculoskeletal injury. However, it is unknown if sleep loss predisposes the athlete to specific t...
