Epidemiology of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
World J Gastroenterol. 2023 Jun 14;29(22):3400-3421. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v29.i22.3400.ABSTRACTSmall intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the bacterial content of the small intestine above normal values. The presence of SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and does not depend on gender or race. SIBO complicates the course of a number of diseases ...

Consistency between the 2016 ACR criteria and a previous diagnosis or hypothesis of fibromyalgia in a specialised referral clinic
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the inaccuracy of FM diagnoses and highlights the possibility that in everyday clinical practice, they are not always made with reference to very specific criteria and that there is a high risk of classifying non-FM patients as having FM. They also underline the importance of an accurate differential diagnosis. Separately classifying as IFM those patients who do not meet the ACR criteria, but have clinical findings indicating FM, may help to prevent their exclusion from specific treatment(s).PMID:37378481 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/mopepq

Fibromyalgia: one year in review 2023
This article discusses various aspects of FM described in scientific papers published in 2022 and indexed in the PubMed database, including the most recent diagnostic acquisitions (especially in relation to the juvenile form of FM), risk factors, co-morbidities and objective measures. Emphasis is placed on the importance of identifying FM early and improving diagnostic methods (e.g. physical measurements, including walking test performance, hand grip force, and autonomic tests). The article also considers hypotheses concerning the pathophysiology of FM, including the role of inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and neuroinflammati...

The efficacy of a brief acceptance-based group intervention in a sample of female patients with fibromyalgia and comorbid obesity: a randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that a brief group-based ABT intervention is effective in enhancing pain acceptance, reducing pain catastrophising and kinesiophobia, and improving performance-based physical functioning. Furthermore, the observed improvements in kinesiophobia and physical functioning may have particular relevance for individuals with comorbid obesity, as they can facilitate greater adherence to physical activity and promote weight loss.PMID:37378486 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/7hvaya

Gender differences in the revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire: a pilot study
CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results indicate that the use of the FIQR as a severity index in male patients probably underestimates the disease impact in this group.PMID:37378485 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/4mlktj

Exploring the prevalence and clinical impact of fibromyalgia syndrome in patients with shoulder diseases: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: We found that FM syndrome is more frequent than expected in a cohort of patients referring to a shoulder orthopaedic outpatient clinic, with a prevalence rate (6%) more than double that of the general population (2%).PMID:37378484 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/rf0zs4
