Evaluation of sexual dysfunction in females with neck and upper back myofascial pain syndrome: a cross-sectional study
AbstractMyofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a prevalent chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder that is frequently encountered in clinical practice and can cause sexual dysfunction in women. While there have been studies examining sexual function in various painful rheumatic conditions, particularly fibromyalgia, no studies have been conducted specifically on primary MPS. In this context, we aimed to investigate the frequency of sexual intercourse and the factors associated with it in women diagnosed with MPS. The study was designed as a cross-sectional study at a tertiary rehabilitation center between May 2022 and April 2023....

Health services utilization by fibromyalgia patients from two ethnic groups
ConclusionsThe utilization rate of healthcare services is high among fibromyalgia patients. The factors associated with high healthcare utilization are different in the two ethnic groups. Future studies could show if interventions designed to address modifiable factors could reduce the overutilization of healthcare services.

The relationship between metacognition, anger, and pain intensity among fibromyalgia patients: a serial mediation model
This study aims to investigate whether anger rumination and state anger serially mediate the relationship between metacognitions and the intensity of pain. The study included 446 subjects who: declared having received a fibromyalgia diagnosis by a rheumatologist/pain physician; completed measures of metacognitions, anger rumination, state-anger, and pain intensity. The serial mediation analysis was conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro (Model 6). Negative beliefs about worry and beliefs about the need to control thoughts indirectly influenced the intensity of pain through two significant mediating pathways: state-anger and ...

Clinical Phenomenology of Fibromyalgia Syndrome in male patients - Same but Different
The majority of knowledge about fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) derives from studies of female patients. Little is known about the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of male patients with FMS. In this retrospective cohort study with a prospective posttreatment-follow-up, we investigated whether male patients with FMS differ from female patients in terms of 1.) symptom burden, 2.) psychological characteristics, and 3.) clinical treatment response. We identified 263 male (4%) out of 5,541 patients with FMS completing a three-week multimodal pain-treatment program.

Acute Pain Management
This case-based session provided hospitalists with expert opinions and evidence-based approaches to navigate challenges when managing acute pain in the inpatient setting. Opioid prescription management can be especially problematic for hospitalists when caring for patients with chronic pain on long-term opiate therapy (LTOT) and those with opioid use disorder (OUD). Managing acute pain of the opiate-naïve patient in the inpatient setting There are multiple options in the hospitalist’s toolbox when managing acute pain in the inpatient setting. Epidemiology of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
World J Gastroenterol. 2023 Jun 14;29(22):3400-3421. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v29.i22.3400.ABSTRACTSmall intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the bacterial content of the small intestine above normal values. The presence of SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and does not depend on gender or race. SIBO complicates the course of a number of diseases ...
