How does occupational physical activity influence health? An umbrella review of 23 health outcomes across 158 observational studies.
CONCLUSIONS: We found favourable associations for most health-related outcomes with high OPA levels, but we also found some evidence for unfavourable associations due to high OPA levels. At this point, there is a need for better quality evidence to provide a unequivocal statement on the health effects of OPA. PMID: 33239353 [PubMed - in process]

Comparative study of cardiorespiratory adaptations in elite basketball players of different age groups.
CONCLUSIONS: The increased LVM is attributed to concentric hypertrophy. This is further supported by the finding that there was no relationship between V̇ O2max and echo parameters. The results of the present study indicate that the cardiorespiratory adaptations caused by basketball training are mainly formed in the early age stages without further increase throughout the years of action. The correlation between stroke characteristics and stroke effect of young table tennis players.
CONCLUSIONS: The time allocation of the three phases of backspin forehand stroke had an important correlation with stroke effect, especially the ball speed and spin speed. The movement of the right wrist joint and right ankle joint were mainly correlated with the ball speed of the stroke. The spin speed of the stroke was mainly correlated with the movement of the right wrist joint. The placement of the stroke was mainly correlated with the rotation of the right knee joint. Predicting the individual lactate minimum speed by T10 and T30 in swimming.
CONCLUSIONS: T10 and T30 can be used as indirect tests for evaluating LACmin in swimming. PMID: 33586936 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of an experimental taper period on male and female swimmers.
CONCLUSIONS: Hence, men and women presenting significantly different values in the age group studied, the responses observed after the TP investigated were the same independent of gender. PMID: 33615760 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Current Insights in the Age-related Decline in Sports Performance of the Older Athlete
Int J Sports Med DOI: 10.1055/a-1480-7730The higher performance level of master athletes compared to non-athletes is often associated with better health throughout life. However, even the physical performance of master athletes declines with age, and this decline accelerates from about the age of 70 years onwards. A progressive loss of muscle mass, declines in force- and power-generating capacity, decreased flexibility, and the concomitant decline in specific tension characterize the muscular changes underlying performance declines. In the cardiovascular system, declines in stroke volume ...

Cervical artery dissections and ischemic strokes associated with vascular neck compression techniques (sportive chokes)
: Strangulation as a fight-finishing maneuver in combat sports, termed “choking” in that context, occurs millions of times yearly worldwide. This activity can be trained safely, but devastating injuries can occur.

Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine
When the opioid addiction crisis began to surge in the U.S. about a decade ago, Dr. Medhat Mikhael spent a lot of time talking to his patients about other ways to heal pain besides opioids, from other types of medications to alternative treatments. As a pain management specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., he didn’t anticipate leaving behind the short-term use of opioids altogether, since they work so well for post-surgical pain. But he wanted to recommend a remedy that was safer and still effective. That turned out to be acupuncture. “Like any treatment, acupuncture...

Exercise medicine education should be expanded
Second to tobacco control, a case can be made that physical activity and/or structured exercise is the best medicine for many of most prevalent non-communicable diseases in the developed world.1 This is especially true for metabolic and cardiovascular disease (CVD), in a preventive and therapeutic context. Although still limited in quantity, currently available evidence based on randomised trials indicates that exercise and many drug interventions are often potentially similar in terms of their mortality benefits in the secondary prevention of CVD, rehabilitation after stroke, treatment of heart failure and prevention of d...

Case report of nuclear medicine, bone scan imaging on a patient with heat stroke induced rhabdomyolysis
J Nucl Med Technol. 2021 Jul 30:jnmt.121.262501. doi: 10.2967/jnmt.121.262501. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBone scan continues to be the second greatest-volume nuclear imaging procedure, offering the advantage of total body examination, low cost, and high sensitivity not only for metastatic lesions but also benign conditions. Its power rests in the physiological uptake and pathophysiologic behavior of 99m technetium (99m-Tc) diphosphonates. 1 The localization of radiotracers in damaged skeletal muscles is because calcium builds up in them and provides a site for radiotracer deposition when combined with phosphate.1 In ca...
