Failure of the Society for Vascular Surgery Clinical Practice Guidelines to Affect Short- and Intermediate-term Clinical Outcomes After Carotid Endarterectomy
We examined the clinical outcomes of patients after CEA who did not adhere to the SVS guidelines.

Rules of engagement: The delicate dance between vascular surgeons, industrial partners, and patient outcomes
In 1953, Michael E. DeBakey performed the first carotid endarterectomy successfully. It would be almost 60  years until a new technique disrupted the carotid world with as much furor. In 2012, transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) burst onto the scene. With its minimally invasive, hybrid appeal and equivalency to carotid endarterectomy stroke risk, TCAR quickly won the hearts of many vascular sur geons. The update of TCAR technology was rapid, increasing dramatically at 15% annually, with a real jolt coming in 2016 when the Centers for Medicare& Medicaid Services allowed coverage for TCAR under the existing nationa...

Introduction of Transcarotid Artery Stenting and the Inherent Responsibilities for a Vascular Surgeon
The treatment options for carotid revascularisation have expanded over the past few decades, making it necessary for vascular surgeons to expand their techniques, become adept at interpreting carotid imaging characteristics, and risk stratifying patients for the multiple carotid revascularisation modalities available. Transfemoral carotid artery stenting was introduced in the early 1990s as a minimally invasive alternative for carotid revascularisation, aimed to mitigate the risk of open surgical carotid revascularisation; however, its adoption into practice has been limited due to pivotal randomised trials showing an incr...

Vascular Surgery In Low- And Middle- Income Countries: A State-of-the-art Review
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents 32% of all global deaths. Estimates project an increase in CVD mortality with the most substantial increase in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs). Within LMICs, we sought to 1) measure the burden of CVD with respect to aortic aneurysm (AA), ischemic stroke (IS), and peripheral artery disease (PAD); 2) quantify surgical access to vascular surgery services.

Vascular Surgery Scientific Productivity in Latin America: Where Are We?
Cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, systemic arterial hypertension, heart failure, stroke, aortic aneurysm, and peripheral artery disease (PAD) remain the primary cause of death and morbidity worldwide. Consequently, vascular research is of the utmost importance for developing preventive strategies and improving diagnostic test and treatment options for patients with these conditions. Specifically, PAD has had increased research interest as it is the third leading cause of atherosclerotic morbidity.

Vascular Surgery in Low and Middle Income Countries: A State-of-the-Art Review
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) represents 32% of all global deaths. Studies have shown an increase in CVD prevalence and mortality with the most substantial increase in low- and middle- income countries (LMIC). Within LMICs, we sought to 1) measure the burden of CVD with respect to aortic aneurysm (AA), ischemic stroke (IS), and peripheral artery disease (PAD); 2) quantify surgical access to vascular surgery services; 3) identify challenges and solutions to addressing disparities.

Lifestyle, inadequate environments in childhood and their effects on adult cardiovascular health
CONCLUSIONS: There are direct relationships between lifestyle and inadequate environments in childhood and cardiovascular effects, although the observed associations showed divergences in terms of results and interpretation. In spite of these, it is recommended to encourage healthy lifestyles and protection against childhood injuries, as habit formation occurs at this age, and its relationship with CVRF since childhood has already been well established. On the other hand, the format and intensity of the stimulus must respect the social, cultural and psychological aspects of each population, aiming to obtain the best and mo...

Neuropsychiatric syndromes associated with stroke: review of the literature
Conclusion These findings emphasize the lack of information on the therapeutic management of neuropsychiatric complications secondary to stroke, especially considering the burden on public health represented by cerebrovascular diseases. Following the improvement in the survival rates with the early strategies to stroke, the advancement of knowledge on neuropsychiatric disorders seem to have the greatest potential to improve the quality of life of patients affected by stroke.
