Effect of Pingan Fang, a Traditional Chinese Medicine compound, on behavioral sensitization and conditioned place preference induced by ethanol in mice.
CONCLUSION: Our data suggested that PG blocked the development and expression of behavioral sensitization induced by ethanol and the development of CPP in mice. The mechanism might be related to the decreased content of DA and Glu and increased content of GABA in the mesolimbic dopamine system. This suggests that PG might be useful for the prevention and treatment of alcohol addiction. PMID: 27400474 [PubMed - in process]

Acute management of alcohol and other drug problems
Intoxication and withdrawal syndromes are common presentations in acute medicine. A comprehensive history, including a collateral one, and thorough examination looking for patterns of signs and symptoms, backed by appropriate investigations, forms the basis of good management. A collaborative, empathic and non-judgemental approach that recognizes the patient's distress, explains the goals of management and sets clear boundaries significantly reduces potential complications and improves outcomes.

Hospital-Based Addiction Medicine Healthcare Providers: High Demand, Short Supply
Substance use disorders account for a significant burden of disease and place an enormous strain on the health care system in the United States and beyond. Despite death tolls climbing, a myriad of evidence-based medications exist to effectively treat many substance use disorders including nicotine, alcohol, and opioid use disorders. To date, hospitals have largely been overlooked as a setting ripe for the delivery of specialized addiction care. This occurs despite a high lifetime prevalence of a substance use disorder (50%) occurring among hospitalized individuals. A potential barrier to this is the lack of addiction medi...

Using data collected via medical chart review, and also self-report questionnaires, we assessed ED visits, revisits, and changes in alcohol use and mental health symptoms in patients before and after receiving services in AMIC. The incidence of alcohol-related ED visits and re-visits from 12-month periods before and after the introduction of AMIC were compared using data fro...

Intestinal Microecology: An Important Target for Chinese Medicine Treatment of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
AbstractNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the most common chronic liver diseases worldwide, causing serious economic and medical burdens. Currently, Chinese medicine (CM) has become an important means in treating NAFLD in China. Intestinal microecology (IM) is an important part of the internal environment in the human body and is involved in the occurrence and development of NAFLD. In this paper, the authors systematically discuss the significance of IM in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and the current status of research on the CM treatment of NAFLD via IM regulation.
