MR Spectroscopy Findings in Retired Professional Rugby League Players
Int J Sports Med DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-120843The aim of this study was to examine brain neurometabolite concentrations in retired rugby league players who had a history of numerous self-reported concussions. Participants were 16 retired professional rugby league players (ages 30–45 years) with an extensive history of concussion and participation in contact sports, and 16 age- and education-matched controls who had no history of neurotrauma or participation in contact sports. All completed a clinical interview, psychological and cognitive testing, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) investigation. MRS voxels were plac...

NZ-RugbyHealth Study: Self-reported Injury Experience and Current Health of Former Rugby Union and Non-contact Sport Players
ConclusionsFormer rugby player groups were at higher risk than the non-contact player group for most injuries during their playing careers, and in retirement had greater prevalence of osteoarthritis and hazardous alcohol consumption. The relative youth of the groups (43.8  years on average) means that health issues that typically do not emerge until later life may not have yet manifested.

A-Z of nutritional supplements: dietary supplements, sports nutrition foods and ergogenic aids for health and performance: Part 46
Introductory remarks The concluding alphabetical part of our series, part 46, deals with just two topics for the letter ‘Z’. One of these, zinc monomethionine aspartate (ZMA), is a derivative of the other well-known supplement, zinc (Zn). Zn is widely used by both athletes and the general population. ZincPA Deuster The essential trace mineral Zn serves multiple biological functions—catalytic, structural, regulatory and substrate1—in support of metabolic, endocrine, signal transduction, cellular control, protein stabilisation and immune networks/pathways.1 2 Overall, approximately 3000 Zn proteins ar...

Improvements in injury prevention behaviours of rugby union players associated with boksmart intervention programme
Conclusions No behaviours worsened, while five of the injury prevention behaviours have improved since the launch of BokSmart (mid 2009–present). Future studies should ascertain whether the BokSmart programme had a causal effect on the improved behaviours and whether BokSmart is able to improve the remaining behaviours.

Injury and illness surveillance during the 43rd isaf youth sailing world championship 2013 in limassol, cyprus
Conclusions During a high-level sailing competition, 3% of youth sailors reported injuries and 1% reported illness. The injuries were mainly acute events occurring during racing, while illness was mainly of the gastrointestinal system. This data provides us with the basis for future studies and analysis of injury mechanisms and risk factors in elite sailing.

Recovery of Cerebral Blood Flow Following Sports-Related Concussion
ImportanceAnimal models suggest that reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) is one of the most enduring physiological deficits following concussion. Despite this, longitudinal studies documenting serial changes in regional CBF following human concussion have yet to be performed.ObjectiveTo longitudinally assess the recovery of CBF in a carefully selected sample of collegiate athletes and compare time course of CBF recovery with that of cognitive and behavioral symptoms.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsA cohort of collegiate football athletes (N = 44) participated in this mixed longitudinal and cross-sectional study at a pri...

Simple Resistance Exercise helps Patients with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Int J Sports MedDOI: 10.1055/s-0035-1549853To date, only limited evidence has supported the notion that resistance exercise positively impacts non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We evaluated the effects of resistance exercise on the metabolic parameters of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in 53 patients who were assigned to either a group that performed push-ups and squats 3 times weekly for 12 weeks (exercise group; n=31) or a group that did not (control; n=22). Patients in the control group proceeded with regular physical activities under a restricted diet throughout the study. The effects of the exercise were c...

Muscular Strength is Independently Associated with Cystatin C: The KORA-Age Study
Int J Sports Med 2018; 39: 225-231 DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-123649The purpose of this study was to investigate if there is a link between muscular strength (MS) and markers of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among older adults. The cross-sectional analysis based on 1041 men and women, aged 65–94 years, who participated in the KORA-Age study. Participants underwent an interview and extensive examinations including anthropometric measurements, diseases and drug intake registration, determination of health-related behaviors, collection of blood samples for measurements of cystatin C and maximal muscle strength evaluation. Plasma Steroids are Not Associated with Resting and Exercise Blood Pressure
Int J Sports Med DOI: 10.1055/a-0660-0121We investigated the associations between steroid hormones and resting and exercise blood pressure in the sedentary state and in response to an exercise program controlling for sex, body mass, ethnicity, age, oral contraceptives, hormone therapy, smoking and alcohol intake in subjects from the HERITAGE Family Study. In the sedentary state, 267 men (28% Blacks) and 301 women (37% Blacks) were available, and 241 men and 254 women completed the exercise program. Fourteen steroid hormones and sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations were assayed in a fasted state. Statistical signific...

Yoga May Ease Symptoms Of Depression, Study Says
(CNN) — Weekly sessions of yoga may ease depressive symptoms in people with other mental health issues, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research. “This is a great result to now encourage people who might be thinking about trying yoga that there’s some scientific evidence that it can be effective for helping reduce depressive symptoms,” said exercise physiologist and study author Jacinta Brinsley, a doctoral candidate at the University of South Australia. Depression is often associated with other mental health conditions. For example, 20 to 40% of people diagnosed with ...
