How a Medication for Opioid Use Disorder Curriculum Translates into Experiences and Internal Medicine Residents' Understanding of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder
This study was completed at a residency program where residents were not previously exposed to outpatient MOUD prescribing. Due to limited availability of faculty treating patients with MOUD, residents spent the majority of their time shadowing a social worker.IMPACT: Residents described gaining a deeper understanding of OUD by having the opportunity to interact with patients in a stable outpatient setting, which for many led to increased confidence and willingness to prescribe MOUD for people with OUD.LESSONS LEARNED: The greater understanding of addiction and willingness to prescribe MOUD described by residents in this s...

Ancient Roots of Today's Emerging Renaissance in Psychedelic Medicine
Cult Med Psychiatry. 2021 Sep 2:1-14. doi: 10.1007/s11013-021-09749-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn international ban on psychedelics initiated by the United Nations' Convention on Psychotropic Substances in 1971 restricted the clinical use of these ancient psychoactive substances. Yet, in an era marked by rising mental health concerns and a growing "Deaths of Despair" epidemic (i.e., excess mortality and morbidity from suicide, drug overdose, and alcoholism), the structured psychedelic use that has long been a part of ritual healing experiences for human societies is slowly regaining credibility in Western medicine fo...

Treating generalized anxiety disorder using complementary and alternative medicine.
CONCLUSION: The findings in this pilot study suggest multimodal interventions focusing on self-care behaviors may be feasible for patients seeking therapies that are adjunct or alternative to conventional treatments. The study also suggested that this type of patient will participate in multitherapy options, and it offers support for expanding the conceptualization of and treatment for GAD by integrating CAM into existing cognitive-behavioral models. Social Workers as Workplace-Based Instructors of Alcohol and Drug Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Emergency Medicine Residents.
We describe a curriculum with social workers as SBIRT trainers of emergency medicine (EM) residents during actual clinical shifts in an EM residency training program. The curriculum required 1 EM faculty member working with social workers and 1 additional hour of formal residency conference teaching time. CONTEXT: We implemented the curriculum at both a university tertiary care hospital emergency department and a county trauma center. We trained 8 social workers at both sites as SBIRT superusers to teach and assess EM resident SBIRT performance with actual patients. We measured the length and number of sessions to at...

Profiling the Australian Consumer of Complementary and Alternative Medicine: A Secondary Analysis of National Health Survey Data.
Conclusions • CAM consumers reported relatively healthier lifestyles compared with nonusers, although some data indicated that CAM users might have greater health care needs. The use of CAM in this high-need population suggests that the present health care system may be inadequate in addressing the needs of these consumers and that CAM may play an important role in servicing these unmet demands. The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among Dialysis Patients.
Conclusions • The study found a lower prevalence of CAM consumption in dialysis patients than had been found in other studies of the general population. Still, the unawareness of the harm and potential interactions and the lack of data sharing between the patients and caregivers might have had disastrous consequences. Therefore, caregivers need to inquire of their patients specifically about their use of CAM, especially for populations with chronic diseases, let alone patients undergoing dialysis. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Therapy.
Authors: Xiao LJ, Tao R Abstract Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has been utilized in China for more than 2,000 years, and it has been practiced in treatment of substance addiction and non-substance addictions. TCM have efficacy in the rehabilitation of abnormal physical problems induced by chronic drug use, including improving immune function, increasing working memory, and protecting against neurological disorders. Given that TCM is potentially effective in the prevention of relapse, it has been suggested that TCM may be the ideal choice in the future for the treatment of opiate addiction. This review examines...
