The relationship of regional hemoglobin A1c testing and amputation rate among patients with diabetes.
CONCLUSION: Lower extremity amputation among patients with diabetes nearly halved over the past decade but only weakly correlated with hemoglobin A1c testing throughout the study period. Better metrics are needed to understand the relationship between preventative care and amputation. PMID: 27206471 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Knowledge, Impressions, and Use of Government-Funded Physical Disability Support Programs in Vascular Surgery: A Survey of Canadian Physicians
Many medical conditions can qualify for government disability support programs (DSPs), including cardiovascular conditions. However, research investigating the role of DSPs in vascular claudication and surgeon practices is lacking.

Effectiveness and Safety of Sclerotherapy for Treatment of Low-Flow Vascular Malformations of the Oropharyngeal Region
Conclusions Sclerotherapy using STS is an efficient treatment for venous malformations of the buccal and pharyngolaryngeal cavity but can lead to significant complication for posterior lesions. Careful assessment of the airway is needed before treatment, and prophylactic tracheotomy should be considered in patients with posterior lesions.

Old Tradition of Prophylactic Fasciotomy Could Be Avoided
Compartment syndrome is one of the true emergencies in vascular and orthopedic surgery. Surgical treatment of this condition is mandated to prevent nerve and eventually further function loss. Traditional teaching and practice of prophylactic fasciotomy after revascularization in acute ischemia are still performed after certain criteria are met. Patients with longer ischemia time and concomitant artery and vein injury will get fasciotomy. Fasciotomy is a relatively morbid and debilitating procedure that may cause disability and permanent damage to nerves and limb function.

Chitinase-3-Like Protein 1 is an Inhibitor of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Dedifferentiation in Advanced Atherosclerosis
Introduction: Efforts have been devoted towards identifying the pathomechanisms of stroke - one of the leading causes for death and disability worldwide. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play an important role in both the growth and rupture of atherosclerotic plaques. A deeper understanding of their function will help in the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to lower the burden of cardiovascular disease. By performing a Human Transcriptome Array of laser capture microdissections of the fibrous cap in ruptured plaques of symptomatic patients (n=20) vs stable plaques of asymptomatic patients (n=2...

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonists for preventing recurrent stroke and other vascular events in people with stroke or transient ischaemic attack
CONCLUSIONS: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonists probably reduce recurrent stroke and total events of cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction or non-fatal stroke, and may improve insulin sensitivity and the stabilisation of carotid plaques. Their effects on adverse events are uncertain. Our conclusions should be interpreted with caution considering the small number and the quality of the included studies. Further well-designed, double-blind RCTs with large samples are required to assess the efficacy and safety of PPAR-γ agonists in the secondary prevention of stroke and related vascular...

Current knowledge of environmental exposure in children during the sensitive developmental periods.
CONCLUSION: To identify the causes and understand the mechanisms involved in the genesis of these diseases is a challenge for science, as there is still a lack of knowledge on children's susceptibility to many environmental contaminants. Prevention policies and more research on child environmental health, improving the recording and surveillance of environmental risks to children's health, should be an ongoing priority in the public health field.
