Associations between sleep variables and ostensibly paranormal experiences and paranormal beliefs: A scoping review
Br J Psychol. 2023 Apr 18. doi: 10.1111/bjop.12655. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNight-time is a period of great significance for many people who report paranormal experiences. However, there is limited understanding of the associations between sleep variables and seemingly paranormal experiences and/or beliefs. The aim of this review is to improve our understanding of these associations while unifying a currently fragmented literature-base into a structured, practical review. In this pre-registered scoping review, we searched for relevant studies in MEDLINE (PubMed), PsycINFO (EBSCO), Web of Science and EMBASE using term...

The Beauty and Science of a Total Solar Eclipse
This story originally appeared in the TIME special edition Beautiful Phenomena available now at retail outlets and through the TIME shop and through Amazon The moon was not placed in space for our entertainment. In fact, it was placed there by accident, most astronomers believe, as the product of a nearly mortal blow the Earth sustained more than 4 billion years ago, when our planet was sideswiped by a Mars-size planetesimal speeding through local space. That collision produced a massive debris cloud that eventually coalesced into our moon. The sun didn’t pop into being for our enjoyment either; it spun down out of a...

Harvard Professor Suggests Eating Only 6 French Fries Per Meal; Twitter Can ’ t Believe It
CAMBRIDGE (CBS) — A Harvard University professor’s comments about French fries have the internet outraged. A recent New York Times article headlined “You Don’t Want Fries With That” details the health risks of eating too many potatoes. A 2017 study cited by the article concluded that “the frequent consumption of fried potatoes appears to be associated with an increased mortality risk.” Harvard’s Eric Rimm calls them “starch bombs” and suggested everyone cut down. “I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries,” Rimm is q...

The Assessment of Eating Pleasure among Older Adults: Development and Preliminary Validation of the Anticipatory and Consummatory Eating Pleasure (ACEPS)
ConclusionTo our knowledge, the ACEPS is the first comprehensive measure of eating pleasure distinguishing anticipatory and consummatory pleasure. This short measure, easily applicable on older people with vulnerability, allows early identification and intervention preventing malnutrition and decline in health. Specifically, encouraging anticipatory eating pleasure may be a first step to improving food intake among older adults.

Prevalence of geophagy and knowledge about its health effects among native Sub-Saharan Africa, Caribbean and South America healthy adults living in France.
Abstract Geophagy is widespread among women from Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and the Caribbean and may persist in western countries. This practice may be associated with adverse effects such as anaemia, constipation or intestinal occlusion. We aimed to determine the prevalence of geophagy and the level of knowledge about its health effects among healthy adults originating from these countries and attending a travel medicine and international vaccination consultation in France. Among 101 travellers enrolled in the study, 83 (82.1%) were born in Sub-Saharan Africa and 13 (12.8%) in South America or the Caribbe...

Epileptic psychoses are underrecognized by French neurologists and psychiatrists
This study evaluates the knowledge about psychotic disorders associated with epilepsy among medical practitioners in France. A self-report questionnaire was sent, and responses of 486 participants were collected. Results showed the rate of correct responses being higher among neurologists compared to psychiatrists, respectively 70.6% and 58.3% (p < 10−11). The highest rate of correct responses was found for the participants trained in epileptology (71%), and a regression analysis confirmed that epilepsy-training was the most influential variable. However, we found that knowledge about epileptic psychosis was impr...
