Palatal Polymorphous Adenocarcinoma with High-Grade Transformation: A Case Report and Literature Review
AbstractPolymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC) is the second most common intraoral malignant neoplasm of the minor salivary glands. However, it is very rare for PAC to show high-grade transformation (HGT) and to our knowledge, the English literature only seven reported cases. HGT tends to be observed when PAC recurs, and it is extremely rare to be seen at initial presentation. Here we report a 43-year-old Japanese male patient with PAC of the right palate showing HGT at initial presentation. Histopathologically, the tumor was characterized by a prominent solid and papillary-cystic growth pattern, with nuclear atypia and necrosi...

Review of engagement activities to promote awareness of radiation and its associated risk amongst the Japanese public before and after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident
Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, many radiation experts directly experienced a vast gap between ideal and real public understanding (PU) of radiation in risk communication. Therefore, this study collated and reviewed information about PU activities for radiation and its risk that six Japanese academic societies —which seem to be socially neutral expert communities —related to radiation and radiation risk conducted before and after the accident. Activities these radiation-related societies provided to the general public were discussed from the following perspectives: (a) diffic...

Japanese stone monuments and disaster memory – perspectives for DRR
The objective is, more specifically, to explore one specific source of disaster memory in Japan, namely the disaster-related stone monuments scattered throughout the archipelago. To achieve the goals, the authors have studied several types of materials. First, the authors have used the “Natural Disaster Monument” online database compiled by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GIS), data upon which the authors based the field research study, focused on water-related disaster in Otsu city (Shiga Prefecture). Simultaneously, the authors have systematically searched Japanese newspapers since the middle of the...

Association between Maternal Vitamin D Intake and Infant Allergies: The Japan Environment and Children's Study
J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2022;68(5):375-382. doi: 10.3177/jnsv.68.375.ABSTRACTMaternal nutrition during pregnancy is one of the factors affecting the health of offspring. There are conflicting findings about the association between maternal vitamin D status and the development of allergic diseases in offspring. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between maternal vitamin D intake and the development of allergic diseases in offspring at 1 y of age. From an ongoing nationwide birth cohort study (the Japan Environment and Children's Study), we obtained information on maternal vitamin D intake, determ...
