Clinical benefit of range uncertainty reduction in proton treatment planning based on dual-energy CT for neuro-oncological patients
CONCLUSION: Robust optimisation with reduced range uncertainty allows for reduction of OAR toxicity, providing a rationale for clinical implementation. Based on these results, we have clinically introduced DECT-based proton treatment planning for neuro-oncological patients, accompanied with a reduced range uncertainty of 2%.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This study shows the clinical benefit of range uncertainty reduction from 3% to 2% in robustly optimised proton plans. A dose reduction to one or more OARs was seen for 89% of the patients, and 44% of the patients had an expected toxicity level decrease.PMID:37493227 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20230110

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome: proposed pathogenesis, terrestrial analogues, and emerging countermeasures
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Jan 23:bjo-2022-322892. doi: 10.1136/bjo-2022-322892. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) refers to a distinct constellation of ocular, neurological and neuroimaging findings observed in astronauts during and following long duration spaceflight. These ocular findings, to include optic disc oedema, posterior globe flattening, chorioretinal folds and hyperopic shifts, were first described by NASA in 2011. SANS is a potential risk to astronaut health and will likely require mitigation prior to planetary travel with prolonged exposures to microgravity. While t...

Role of a medical student neuro-society organized neurosurgical conference: The Glasgow neuro experience
CONCLUSION: Neurosurgical conferences organized by student neuro-societies successfully address the gap between a lack of neurosurgery exposure and a competitive training selection. These events give medical students an initial understanding of a neurosurgical career through lectures and practical workshops; attendees also gain insight into attaining relevant achievements and have an opportunity to present research. Student neuro-society-organized conferences have the potential to be adopted internationally and used as a tool to educate on a global level and greatly aid medical students who are aspiring neurosurgeons.PMID:...
