Effectiveness and co-benefits of a telephone-based intervention in reducing obesity risk of children aged 2-4 years: findings from a pragmatic randomised controlled trial during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia
This study assessed effectiveness of a telephone-based intervention in reducing obesity risk of young children.METHODS: We adapted a study protocol (developed before the pandemic) and conducted a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of 662 women with children aged 2 years (mean age 24·06 months [SD 0·69]) during March, 2019, and October, 2021, extending the original planned intervention of 12 months to 24 months. The adapted intervention comprised five telephone-based support sessions plus text messages over a 24-month period (at child ages 24-26 months, 28-30 months, 32-34 months, 36-38 months, and 42-44 months). The i...

Evolutionary forward genomics reveals novel insights into the genes and pathways dysregulated in recurrent early pregnancy loss
STUDY QUESTION Are the genes that gained novel expression in the endometria of Eutherian (placental) mammals more likely to be dysregulated in patients with endometrial-associated recurrent early pregnancy loss (REPL)? SUMMARY ANSWER There was a significant enrichment of genes dysregulated in REPL patients among the Eutherian-specific endometrial genes. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Pregnancy loss is the most common complication of human pregnancy. REPL has multiple etiologies, including dysregulation of endometrial function, leading to ‘suboptimal’ implantation. Although the implantation process is tightly regulated...

Back to the future: What do accident causation models tell us about accident prediction?
Publication date: April 2018 Source:Safety Science, Volume 104 Author(s): Eryn Grant, Paul M. Salmon, Nicholas J. Stevens, Natassia Goode, Gemma J. Read The prediction of accidents, or systems failure, should be driven by an appropriate accident causation model. Whilst various models exist, none is yet universally accepted, but elements of different models are. The paper presents the findings from a review of the most frequently cited systems based accident causation models to extract a common set of systems thinking tenets that could support the prediction of accidents. The review uses the term “systems thinking tenet...

Parental health in the context of public family care proceedings: A scoping review of evidence and interventions
CONCLUSIONS: Parents who have children subject to care proceedings have complex health needs that pre-date CPS concerns. The studies included in our review strongly suggest that health issues are exacerbated by child removal, triggering deteriorations in mental health, poor antenatal health for subsequent pregnancies, and avoidable mortality. Findings highlight the need for targeted and timely intervention for parents to improve whole-family outcomes. There are models that have been designed, implemented, and tested using relationship-based, trauma-informed, multidisciplinary, family-focused, and long-term approaches.PMID:...

Promoting Policy and Environmental Change in Faith-Based Organizations: Outcome Evaluation of a Mini-Grants Program
This study sought to determine whether perceptions of the health promotion environment changed over time and whether perceived environmental change was associated with healthy behavior at church and in general. This study used a single-group pre–post design with 1-year follow-up. Parishioners (N = 258) completed self-administered questionnaires assessing perceptions of the church health promotion environment relative to healthy eating and physical activity, eating behavior and intention to use physical activity facilities at church, and eating and physical activity behaviors generally. Results indicate that perceived...

Acceptability and tolerability of omega-3 fatty acids as adjunctive treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders.
The objective of this study was to examine the acceptability and tolerability of omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunctive treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders (EDs). Children and adolescents with EDs received omega-3 supplements (300 mg eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and 200 mg docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]/day) in addition to standard treatment for 8 weeks. Primary outcomes were dropout rate, compliance, and side effects. Secondary outcomes included percent ideal body weight, Eating Disorders Inventory-3 (EDI-3), Children's Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2), and Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MA...
