Creating a Continuum for Latino-Focused Nutrition Education
A pipeline for nutrition education (NE) ideally flows from the university to the local community creating an environment for improved health awareness, nutrition knowledge, and eating/physical activity behavior. Three objectives of a five-year, transdisciplinary grant are to develop and institutionalize a ‘Graduate Certificate in Latino Health and Nutrition Studies’ for students to gain knowledge, skills and confidence in their future profession from courses and service-learning activities, for local community programs to partner as training sites, and for a high-risk Latino community to receive culturally-relevant NE ...

The legalization of off-label promotion: Vascular Solutions beat the FDA and what their victory means for medtech
Welcome to the Medsider interview series, a special new feature at MassDevice, which will appear regularly. All interviews are conducted by Scott Nelson, Founder of Medsider. We hope you enjoy them! For as long as I can remember, at every company meeting I’ve ever been to, the topic of off-label promotion is always covered.  Whether it was new-hire orientation, a national sales meeting, or some other large commercial event, the dissemination of off-label information was always presented as not only a fireable offense, but something that could get you thrown in jail.  C.R. Fear of Vomiting and Low Body Weight in Two Pediatric Patients: Diagnostic Challenges.
We report here the cases of one child and one adolescent presenting with significant weight loss, food restriction and fear of vomiting. The child's fear of vomiting masked a concurrent desire to achieve fitness and weight loss, which was uncovered following weight restoration. The adolescent patient, although significantly underweight and food avoidant, also expressed no concerns with body image, until weight restored. The history, course in hospital and management of these patients is discussed, along with several challenges that complicated the diagnosis. PMID: 28331505 [PubMed - in process]

Opportunities and Challenges for Personal Heat Exposure Research
Conclusions: Personal heat exposure research provides more valid and precise insights into how often people encounter heat conditions and when, where, to whom, and why these encounters occur. Published literature on personal heat exposure is limited to date, but existing studies point to opportunities to inform public health practice regarding extreme heat, particularly where fine-scale precision is needed to reduce health consequences of heat exposure. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP556 Received: 24 May 2016 Revised: 17 January 2017 Accepted: 20 January 2017 Published: 01 August 2017 Address correspondence to D.M. Insulin restriction, medicalisation and the Internet: A corpus-assisted study of diabulimia discourse in online support groups
This article reports the first discourse-based study of diabulimia. It employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques afforded by corpus linguistics, a methodology for examining extensive collections of digitised language data, to interrogate the discourse surrounding diabulimia in an approx. 120,000-word collection of messages posted to three English-speaking online diabetes support groups. The analysis shows how, despite lacking official disease status, diabulimia was nonetheless linguistically constructed by the support group contributors as if it were a medically legitimate mental illness. This articl...

Pairing food and drink: A physiological model of blood ethanol levels for a variety of drinking behaviors
We present a blood ethanol concentration compartment model which utilizes an animal's ethanol intake, food intake, and weight to predict the animal's blood ethanol concentration at any given time. By incorporating the food digestion process into the model we can predict blood ethanol concentration levels over time for a variety of drinking and eating scenarios. The model is calibrated and validated using data from cohorts of male monkeys, and is able to capture blood ethanol concentration kinetics of the monkeys from a variety of drinking behavior classifications.PMID:35033503 | DOI:10.1016/j.mbs.2022.108778
