What do Positive and Negative Cutibacterium Culture Results in Periprosthetic Shoulder Infection Mean? A Multi-Institutional Control Study
Deep tissue culture specimens obtained at the time of revision shoulder arthroplasty are commonly positive for Cutibacterium. Clinical interpretation of positive cultures can be difficult. This was a multi-institutional study evaluating the accuracy of cultures for Cutibacterium using positive control (PC) and negative control (NC) samples. The relationship between time to culture positivity and strength of culture positivity was also studied.

Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship in Adult Cardiac Surgery: Joint Consensus Report of the PeriOperative Quality Initiative and the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Cardiac Society
Opioid-based anesthesia and analgesia is a traditional component of perioperative care for the cardiac surgical patient. Growing enthusiasm for Enhanced Recovery Programs (ERPs) coupled with evidence of potential harm associated with high-dose opioids suggests that we reconsider the role of opioids in cardiac surgery.

Initial orthostatic hypotension and cerebral blood flow regulation: effect of {alpha}1-adrenoreceptor activity
We examined the hypothesis that α1-adrenergic blockade would lead to an inability to correct initial orthostatic hypotension (IOH) and cerebral hypoperfusion, leading to symptoms of presyncope. Twelve normotensive humans (aged 25 ± 1 yr; means ± SE) attempted to complete a 3-min upright stand, 90 min after the administration of either α1-blockade (prazosin, 1 mg/20 kg body wt) or placebo. Continuous beat-to-beat measurements of middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv; Doppler), blood pressure (finometer), heart rate, and end-tidal Pco2 were obtained. Compared with placebo, the α1-blockade redu...

Histone deacetylases and their inhibitors: new implications for asthma and chronic respiratory conditions
Purpose of reviewThe importance of the role of histone deacetylase enzymes in the pathogenesis of asthma and chronic respiratory diseases is increasingly being recognized. Similarly, the potential clinical utility of histone deacetylase enzymes in the treatment of disease is emerging. In this review, the role of histone deacetylases (HDAC) and their inhibitors in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is discussed. Recent findingsHDAC are able to catalyze the hydrolysis of acetyl groups on lysine residues of histones, causing the condensation and coiling of chromosomal DNA around histones, and therefore regulatin...

Optimization of the interface between radiology, surgery, radiotherapy, and pathology in head and neck tumor surgery: a navigation-assisted multidisciplinary network
Abstract: A navigation-assisted multidisciplinary network to improve the interface between radiology, surgery, radiotherapy, and pathology in the field of head and neck cancer is described. All implicated fields are integrated by a common server platform and have remote data access in a ready-to-use format. The margins of resection and exact locations of biopsies are mapped intraoperatively. The pathologist uses the numerical coordinates of these samples to precisely trace each specimen in the anatomical field. Subsequently, map-guided radiotherapy is planned. In addition to the benefits of image-guided resection, this mod...
