Device therapy for atrial septal defects in a multicenter cohort: Acute outcomes and adverse events
Conclusion: Although device closure of ASDs is associated with low morbidity and rare mortality, ongoing assessment of device safety profiles are warranted, and registries offer opportunities to facilitate the required surveillance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract B29: Case-control study of metabolic syndrome and breast cancer in Puerto Rico
Conclusions: This pilot study found marginal evidence of an association of the MS and elevated fasting glucose with breast cancer in a population of Hispanic origin. Future studies should assess this association using a larger sample size and considering the impact of tumor subtypes on breast cancer risk.Grant Support: The project was supported by U54CA96297 and U54CA96300 from the UPR/MDACC Partnership for Excellence in Cancer Research, NCI & by the RCMI-Clinical Research Center grant G12RR03051 from the UPR Medical Sciences Campus.Citation Format: Ana Patricia Ortiz, Cynthia Perez, Edna Mora, Damarys Santiago, Carola...

Abstract C61: Genetic alterations in the TP53 genomic region of African American and Caucasian colorectal cancers
Conclusions: We developed PCR protocols that should allow us to conduct a comprehensive mutational profiling of coding and non-coding regions of the TP53 genomic region in DNA isolated from frozen tissues. Comparison of genetic alteration profiles of TP53 in AAs and CAs will aid in determining the race/ethnicity of CRC patients. These studies were supported by a Charles Barkley Foundation grant though the UAB MHRC and a pre-pilot project of the UAB/TU/MSM Partnership grant, U54-CA 118948.Citation Format: Jesus F. Abstract A82: University of Guam/University of Hawaii Cancer Center Partnership: Celebrating 10 years of research, training, education, and outreach to reduce cancer health disparities among Pacific Islanders
In conclusion, our partnership has significantly increased over the past decade the research capacity at UOG and cultivated interest in cancer research among minority students attending the partner institutions. Outreach has resulted in model tobacco control policy in Guam, including new tobacco taxes that provide funds to support the Guam Cancer Registry and a Guam Cancer Trust Fund. A regional research infrastructure has been established and resources have been leveraged to address Pacific Islander cancer health disparities in Guam, Hawaii, and the USAPI. Supported by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institu...

Recent advances in epithelium-derived cytokines (IL-33, IL-25, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin) and allergic inflammation
Purpose of reviewAllergic diseases are thought to be driven by aberrant immune responses. Epithelium responds to various environmental factors by releasing key cytokines, such as thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), IL-33, and IL-25. Although there are important differences among these cytokines, there are also similarities which confound a clear understanding of the exact roles of these cytokines. The purpose of this review is to analyze the advances in biology and functions of these cytokines over recent years, elucidate their differences and similarities, and provide new conceptual understanding as to their roles in all...

Carmustine, Etoposide, Cytarabine, and Melphalan (BEAM)–Campath Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: An Analysis of Outcomes from the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation
We report here the outcomes of allogeneic SCT using carmustine, etoposide, cytarabine, and melphalan (BEAM)-Campath conditioning for aggressive NHL as reported to the British Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BSBMT). This retrospective study identified 46 patients who reported to the BSBMT registry as having undergone BEAM-Campath conditioned allogeneic SCT for aggressive NHL between 1999 and 2010.

Re‐storying narrative identity: a dialogical study of mental health recovery and survival
Accessible summary Current UK mental health nursing policy is critiqued for neglecting the storied complexities of recovery‐survival. Within a critical framework, creative non‐fiction is used in a relational auto‐ethnographic design to produce two short stories that demonstrate the utility of narrative re‐storying in recovery‐survival. New insights emerge for mental health nurse practice and research. These are: that narrative re‐storying may help the recovery process for individuals and communities; that hybrid transcultural writing positively undermines barriers between professionals and consumers of mental h...

The role of health professional organizations in improving maternal and newborn health: The FIGO LOGIC experience
The FIGO Leadership in Obstetrics and Gynecology for Impact and Change (LOGIC) Initiative in Maternal and Newborn Health improved the internal and external capacity of eight national professional organizations of obstetrics and gynecology in six African and two Asian countries. The initiative was funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and had three key objectives: to support the eight FIGO member associations to strengthen their capacity to work effectively; to influence national policies on maternal and newborn health; and to work toward improving clinical practice in this area.

Abstract B01: PEG3 DNA methylation and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in African American and European American women
Conclusions: Aberrant DNA methylation at the regulatory region of the PEG3 imprinted gene may increase susceptibility to CIN2/3; an association that may be stronger in European American women and which persisted after accounting for HPV infection. If confirmed in larger studies, these findings support the hypothesis that DNA methylation at PEG3 may represent a susceptibility locus that can be exploited to identify, from among a large number of abnormal colposcopy cases, those likely to progress to CIN or worse.Citation Format: Adriana C. Abstract A90: Predictors of inpatient mortality, charges, and length of stay among the very old with colon cancer in the United States
Conclusions: Colon cancer has a large burden of illness among older persons. Continued research that seeks to risk stratify these cases based on comorbid conditions and complications should improve both clinical and economic outcomes in this vulnerable population.Citation Format: Tomas Nuño, Grant Skrepnek. Neutrophil recruitment by allergens contribute to allergic sensitization and allergic inflammation
Purpose of review: To discuss the presence and role of neutrophils in asthma and allergic diseases, and outline the importance of pollen and cat dander-induced innate neutrophil recruitment in induction of allergic sensitization and allergic inflammation. Recent findings: Uncontrolled asthma is associated with elevated numbers of neutrophils, and levels of neutrophil-attracting chemokine IL-8 and IL-17 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids. These parameters negatively correlate with lung function. Pollen allergens and cat dander recruit neutrophils to the airways in a toll-like receptor 4, myeloid differentiation protein-2, and...

Genes Required for the Fitness of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium during Infection of Immunodeficient gp91-/- phox Mice Microbial Immunity and Vaccines
Salmonella enterica causes systemic diseases (typhoid and paratyphoid fever), nontyphoidal septicemia (NTS), and gastroenteritis in humans and other animals worldwide. An important but underrecognized emerging infectious disease problem in sub-Saharan Africa is NTS in children and immunocompromised adults. A current goal is to identify Salmonella mutants that are not pathogenic in the absence of key components of the immune system such as might be found in immunocompromised hosts. Such attenuated strains have the potential to be used as live vaccines. We have used transposon-directed insertion site sequencing (TraDIS) to s...
