Teachers' beliefs about social-emotional learning: Identifying teacher profiles and their relations with job stress and satisfaction
This study examines the extent to which teachers may be grouped based on their beliefs about social-emotional learning (SEL). SEL is aimed at promoting students' social and emotional competencies (e.g., responsible decision making, social awareness). Research suggests that in addition to being relevant to student outcomes, SEL is also relevant to teachers' experiences at work. We utilized latent profile analysis to identify profiles of teachers based on three different beliefs—comfort with SEL, commitment to improving SEL skills, and perceptions of principal and school-wide support for SEL. Findings revealed three differ...

Attitudes of Brazilian Medical Students Towards Psychiatric Patients and Mental Illness: A Quantitative Study Before and After Completing the Psychiatric Clerkship
Conclusion Participation in a psychiatric clerkship was associated with greater social acceptance but not with improvement on other attitudinal factors. This may reflect ceiling effects in responses before the clerkship concerning supernatural and bio-psychosocial beliefs about causes of mental illness that left little room for change.

Deaf and hard of Hearing Students’ Opportunities for Learning in a Regular Secondary School in Chile: Teacher Practices and Beliefs
This study aimed to analyze the learning context of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) students in a Chilean high school, in which 50 D/HH students (7th to 12th grade) attend classes together with hearing classmates. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven high school teachers and five deaf education teachers, to explore their practices and beliefs regarding teaching D/HH students in regular classrooms. Ten classroom observations were also carried out in classes with and without the presence of a deaf education teacher. Interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Class observations enabled a ...

An Examination of the Relationship Between Consequence ‐Specific Normative Belief Patterns and Alcohol‐Related Consequences Among College Students
ConclusionsThe results suggest value in prevention efforts that include normative beliefs about alcohol‐related consequences. Further, parental norms in particular have the potential to enhance interventions, especially through direct communication of disapproval for experiencing consequences. The relationship between consequence‐specific normative influences and experiencing drinking‐related consequences was examined. Normative subgroups were identified using latent profile analysis, which were then used to predict membership in a high‐risk subgroup of college students (MRC group). Three normative profiles were i...

The test-retest reliability of questionnaires regarding attitudes and beliefs toward noise, hearing loss, and hearing protector devices in young adults.
Conclusion: Reliable test-retest measurements of the YANS and BAHPHL instrument can be performed. Hence, these questionnaires can be used in longitudinal studies to explore young adults' changes in attitudes toward noise, hearing loss, and hearing protection, with or without an educational intervention. Adolescent Students’ Perceived Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competence and Autonomy: Examining Links to Dispositions toward Science in 42 Countries
Publication date: Available online 9 April 2019Source: Computers in Human BehaviorAuthor(s): Shaljan Areepattamannil, Ieda M. SantosAbstractA growing body of research has examined the relations of dispositions toward information and communication technology (ICT) to science achievement among adolescent students. However, there is little research exploring the associations between ICT-related dispositions and science-related dispositions among adolescent students. Therefore, this study, employing a self-determination theory perspective, investigated the relationships of perceived competence in ICT usage and perceived autono...

Prior Beliefs About the Importance and Control of Thoughts are Predictive But Not Specific to Subsequent Intrusive Unwanted Thoughts and Neutralizing Behaviors
AbstractDysfunctional beliefs are the central element in cognitive-behavioral conceptualizations of obsessive –compulsive disorder (OCD). The purpose of this study was to further elucidate the etiological role of preexisting dysfunctional beliefs in the occurrence of unwanted intrusive thoughts and neutralizing behaviors after a critical event by examining their predictive value and specificity in a prosp ective study with undergraduate students. The dysfunctional belief domains importance/control of thoughts (ICT), responsibility/threat (RT), and perfectionism/certainty (PC) were assessed at baseline 8 weeks prior to t...

Psychometric properties of the stress control mindset measure in university students from Australia and the UK
ConclusionsCurrent data provide preliminary support for the SCMM as a reliable and valid measure with good psychometric properties and theoretically consistent relations with health outcomes under stress. Findings provide initial evidence supporting the potential utility of the SCMM in future research examining relations between stress mindsets and health and performance outcomes.

Virtual Simulation in Undergraduate Nursing Education: Effects on Students' Correct Recognition of and Causative Beliefs About Mental Disorders
Comput Inform Nurs. 2021 Apr 29. doi: 10.1097/CIN.0000000000000745. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVirtual simulation as an emerging nursing pedagogy can facilitate optimal learning through the use of experiential learning and technology. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the long-term effects of virtual simulation on undergraduate nursing students' recognition of and causative beliefs about depression and schizophrenia. Students' responses from the simulation cohort (n = 149) and the nonsimulation cohort (n = 150) at a school of nursing in the United States were compared. While students' responses ...
