Atlas condemned to hold up the celestial heavens and bailout the mechanical thrombectomy failures in stroke?
ABSTRACT Since the Greek Aellus Galenum (129 AD - c.200/c.216), vertigo was considered a problem attributed to a cerebral disorder, diagnosed as the manifestation of apoplectiform cerebral congestion. In the mid-19th century, the Frenchman Prosper Meni ère changed this concept by placing the origin of this symptom in the inner ear. The main objective of this historical note is to highlight who Menière was, his work, and some aspects of the disease that bears his name.RESUMO Desde o grego Aellus Galenum (129 d.C.

Small vessel occlusion and syphilis in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke
Conclusion: The current study showed that the frequency of positive syphilis serological test was higher in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke and SVD as the potential causal mechanism. This finding could be related to the endothelial dysfunction occurring in syphilis.RESUMO Introdu ção: A sífilis é uma doença endêmica, especialmente em países de baixa e média renda, com acometimento vascular descrito em grandes vasos (aortite), porém nenhuma relação clara foi reconhecida em paciente com acidente vascular cerebral, exceto para aqueles com sífilis meningovascular. Knowledge and attitudes in dementia held by general practitioners in the primary care setting of Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil
Conclusions: More training for GPs on dementia should be provided.RESUMO Introdu ção: A doença de Alzheimer é a principal causa de demência em todo o mundo. Parkinson's disease effect on autonomic modulation: an analysis using geometric indices
Conclusions: The results suggest a reduction in the parasympathetic autonomic modulation and global variability in individuals with PD compared to controls, regardless of sex, age, and bod y mass index.RESUMO Introdu ção: A doença de Parkinson (DP) produz alterações autonômicas, que indicam menor modulação parassimpática e variabilidade global, mas que devem ser investigadas quanto aos métodos geométricos. Métodos: Estudo transversal, no...

Prevalence of multiple sclerosis in key cities of Brazil. A study in Joinville, Southern Brazil
Conclusions: Despite its latitude location and European colonization, the prevalence rate was below expectation. The intense internal migration from regions with lower MS prevalence rates to Joinville may have played a role in attenuating the increased risk of MS associated with latitude gradient and European ancestry. Prevalence studies in other cities from Southern Brazil with no significant internal migration and taking part in this broad project may clarify this issue.RESUMO Introdu ção: O Comitê Brasileiro de Tratamento e Pesquisa em Esclerose Múltipla (EM) (BCTRIMS) lançou uma iniciativa para determinar a preval...

Managing intrathecal administration of nusinersen in adolescents and adults with 5q-spinal muscular atrophy and previous spinal surgery
Conclusion: In SMA patients with previous spinal surgery, the use of imaging-guided intervention is necessary for administering intrathecal nusinersen. Transforaminal technique is indicated in patients for whom the interlaminar space is not available, and injections should always be guided by either CT or fluoroscopy.RESUMO Introdu ção: A atrofia muscular espinal (AME) é uma desordem neurodegenerativa dos motoneurônios inferiores frequentemente associada à ocorrência de deformidade da coluna vertebral.

Older adults with epilepsy: memory complaints and objective neuropsychological performance
Conclusions: OAE presented worse cognitive performance and greater memory complaints. Episode onset at ≥ 60 years of age was associated with complaints, but not with objective cognitive deficit. We found an association between subjective and objective cognitive performance, with aspects of epilepsy and worse QoL scores.RESUMO Introdu ção: A queixa de memória fraca é frequente em pessoas com epilepsia.

Exposure to electromagnetic field, cell phone use behaviors, SAR values, and changes in health following exposure in adolescent university students
Conclusions: Participants exhibited high levels of cell phone use and experienced biological, behavioral, and sleep problems. They also had very little knowledge about specific SAR values, an important criterion concerning cell phones.RESUMO Introdu ção: O uso de dispositivos tecnológicos está crescendo rapidamente e o uso de telefone celulares aumenta em paralelo. Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893) and his second thoughts about hysteria
ABSTRACT Jean-Martin Charcot's (1825 – 1893) concepts of hysteria evolved significantly over the last 20 years of his career. In the “ Le çons du Mardi à la Salpêtrière ” (Tuesday lessons), his original conception of a “ dynamic lesion ” coexists alongside a new psychological conception, sometimes in a rather contradictory way. According to the hand-written transcript of his Tuesday lesson on February 21st, 1888, Charcot stated: “ Hysteria must be taken for what it is: psychic disease par excellence ” . However, in the printed edition of the Tuesday lessons, this emphasis on psychological factors was very...
