5.12 Relationship Between Polypharmacy and Clinical Functioning in Patients With ADHD: A Retrospective Analysis of Real-World Data
Polypharmacy is common in the treatment of ADHD, but little is known about its relation to clinical functioning. The primary objective of this analysis was to use a large real-world data (RWD) source derived from electronic health records to examine this relationship in patients with ADHD across the life span. Notably, this RWD source includes information regarding both medications and clinical functioning, measured with a clinician-rated Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) score.

What’s e-health and what does it mean for you?
“If you visit a doctor’s office or hospital and you usually see stacks of manila folders with labels on them and loads of paper inside. When a doctor wants to research more about a patient, it can take a while to sort through the file and decipher handwritten notes. Electronic health records are fast [...]

CMS, OIG Proposals on Self-Referral, Safe Harbor Rules Draw AAFP Comment
The AAFP recently took advantage of an opportunity to highlight its agreement with -- and some concerns about -- two federal proposals that would tweak existing health information technology policy so as to facilitate physicians' adoption of electronic health record (EHR) technology. The June 5 letter from AAFP Board Chair Glen Stream, M.D., M.B.I, was addressed to both CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner and HHS Inspector General Daniel Levinson; it addressed separate proposed rules from CMS and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) that were published in the April 10 Federal Register

Adoption Of Electronic Health Records Grows Rapidly, But Fewer Than Half Of US Hospitals Had At Least A Basic System In 2012
The US health care system is in the midst of an enormous change in the way health care providers and hospitals document, monitor, and share information about health and care delivery. Part of this transition involves a wholesale, but currently uneven, shift from paper-based records to electronic health record (EHR) systems. We used the most [...]

Electronic Health Records, Privacy, and Surveillance
Recent revelations of secret government surveillance programs have many medical practitioners on edge about the data they effectively are turning over to the government in the form of electronic health records (EHR). Although I am not aware of any sinister or misguided uses of the vast amounts of information that we submit to just a few clearinghouses (silos of health information) , and although the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) affords notable protections for most private information, accidental breaches of patient privacy have occurred . In 1 case, records of 20,000 emergency room patient...

Docs 'stressed and unhappy' about EHRs
While physicians recognize the benefits of electronic health records, they also complain that many systems deployed nowadays are cumbersome to use and often act as obstacles to quality care, according to a new report from RAND Corporation. The study makes the case that being able to provide high-quality healthcare is a primary driver of job satisfaction for doctors, and that anything that hinders that ability is a source of stress. RAND officials say the findings suggest potential early warnings of deeper quality problems developing in the U.S. healthcare system. read more

The objective is to estimate the effects of practice characteristics on time spent per prior authorization request in primary care practices. Methods: Secondary analysis was performed using data on nine primary care practices in Central New York. Practice characteristics and demographics were collected at the onset of the study. In addition, participants were instructed to complete an "event form" (EF) to document each prior authorization event during a 4-6 week period; prior authorizations included requests for medication as well as other health care services. Stepwise Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) Regression was used to m...
