What “off-label” use of a drug really is, and why you need to know about it
When your doctor prescribes a drug for you, you probably assume — and with good reason — that it is an FDA-approved treatment for your condition. That may or may not be the case. Faith-based health promotion interventions and programs targeting this population have shown effective however cancer disparities remain; in some cases the cancer mortality gap is widening among African American men (Jemal et. al, 2010). Strategic health communication programs that engage and include the consumer in a collaborative communication process can help to address and eventually break down barriers that contribute to health disparities (Kreps...

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 2381: Old Tricks, New Opportunities: How Companies Violate the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes and Undermine Maternal and Child Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic
This study identified marketing tactics of BMS companies since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic by reviewing promotional materials and activities from 9 companies in 14 countries, and the official Code reporting data from the Philippines. Eight qualitative themes emerged that indicate companies are capitalizing on fear related to COVID-19 by using health claims and misinformation about breastfeeding. Other promotional tactics such as donations and services were used to harness the public sentiment of hope and solidarity. Past studies show that these tactics are not new, but the pandemic has provided a new entry point, he...

Black Community Conversations About Opposing Ethnically Targeted Marketing of Unhealthy Foods and Beverages
AbstractEfforts to reduce disparities in obesity prevalence affecting Black Americans are having limited success. One reason for this may be the disproportionate, ethnically targeted marketing of foods and beverages high in fat and sugar (FBHFS) to Black consumers. Such marketing promotes high consumption of FBHFS, leading to excess caloric intake and unintentional weight gain. We convened focus groups with Black men and women (totaln = 57) in collaboration with community groups in three localities to elicit their views, as consumers and parents/caregivers, about targeted FBHFS marketing and potential ways to combat it...

The role of reference group norms in self-regulation was examined from the perspective of transgressions. Conversely, weakly identified individuals reported more intense feelings of shame, an emotion reflecting an inference that "bad" characteristics of the person are perceived as the cause of the transgression. The studies also e...
