Nutrition and neurodevelopment: the search for candidate nutrients in the Seychelles Child Development Nutrition Study
Neurotoxicology. 2020 Dec;81:300-306. doi: 10.1016/j.neuro.2020.09.021. Epub 2020 Oct 14.ABSTRACTThis review examines the role of nutrients in child development and outlines the key nutrients identified as potentially important to neurodevelopment among high fish consumers in the Seychelles Child Development Nutrition Study (SCDNS). It describes the clinical assessment of these nutrients in the blood and breast milk samples collected from the cohort of 300 pregnant women who were recruited, at their first antenatal visit, on the SCDNS. These key nutrients include the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), docosoh...

Transcriptional responses of attractin gene in the mosquito Anopheles culicifacies: A synergistic neuro-olfactory regulation.
Authors: Das De T, Hasija Y, Dixit R Abstract Background & objectives: Attractin, is a large multi-domain protein which has regulatory functions in multiple physiological processes and thus have strong therapeutic potential. In invertebrates, it was first identified as a water-borne protein pheromone that plays important role in chemical communication and coordinates reproductive activities. But its role in mosquitoes/insects remains unknown. Our unexpected discovery of attractin homolog from the olfactory tissue of Anopheles culicifacies mosquito prompted us to investigate the possible role of Ac-attractin (Ac...

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome: proposed pathogenesis, terrestrial analogues, and emerging countermeasures
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Jan 23:bjo-2022-322892. doi: 10.1136/bjo-2022-322892. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) refers to a distinct constellation of ocular, neurological and neuroimaging findings observed in astronauts during and following long duration spaceflight. These ocular findings, to include optic disc oedema, posterior globe flattening, chorioretinal folds and hyperopic shifts, were first described by NASA in 2011. SANS is a potential risk to astronaut health and will likely require mitigation prior to planetary travel with prolonged exposures to microgravity. While t...

Dietary supplementation with Allium hirtifolium and/or Astragalus hamosus improved memory and reduced neuro-inflammation in the rat model of Alzheimer ’s disease
Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, e-First Articles. Allium hirtifolium Boiss and Astragalus hamosus L. are mentioned in Iranian traditional medicine documentation as therapy for a kind of dementia with the features and symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer ’s disease (AD). In the present study, the effects of these herbs on neuro-inflammation and memory have been evaluated as new therapies in amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced memory impairment model. Separate groups of rats were fed with A. hirtifolium or A. hamosus extract (both 100 mg/(kg·day)−1) star ted 1 week before stereotaxic surgery to 24 h before behav...

Initial researches on neuro-functional status and evolution in chronic ethanol consumers with recent traumatic spinal cord injury.
We present a synthesis of related data on lesion mechanisms in post-traumatic myelogenous disorders, namely some of the alcohols and their actions on the nervous system, with details on the influences exerted, in such afflictions, by the chronic consumption of ethanol. The subject is not frequently approached - according to a literature review with systematic elements, which we have done before - thus constituting a niche that deserves to be further explored. The applicative component of the article highlights statistical data resulted from a retrospective study regarding the specialized casuistry from the Neuromuscular Re...

Nutritional Status in patients with Neuro-Beh çet's disease.
CONCLUSION: Malnutrition was higher in patients with NBD. Higher disability level and progressive disease course may be risk factors for malnutrition in NBD. Malnutrition may be seen more frequently in earlier phases of neurological involvement. PMID: 33600096 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum FGF21 in girls with anorexia nervosa - comparison to normal weight and obese female adolescents.
CONCLUSIONS: 1) Serum FGF21 concentrations are decreased in AN and elevated in obesity. They are independently and positively related to BMI and insulin resistance; 2) Decreased serum FGF21 in AN may support the maintenance of normal blood glucose through adjustment the insulin levels and insulin sensitivity; 3) Elevated FGF21 levels in obesity may be considered adaptive mechanism preventing insulin resistance and its metabolic consequences. Effects of early-life malnutrition on neurodevelopment and neuropsychiatric disorders and the potential mechanisms
Publication date: 20 April 2018 Source:Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, Volume 83 Author(s): Xintian Yan, Xinzhi Zhao, Juxue Li, Lin He, Mingqing Xu Lines of evidence have demonstrated that early-life malnutrition is highly correlated with neurodevelopment and adulthood neuropsychiatric disorders, while some findings are conflicting with each other. In addition, the biological mechanisms are less investigated. We systematically reviewed the evidence linking early-life nutrition status with neurodevelopment and clinical observations in human and animal models. We summarized the effects of spe...
