Association between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes: a population-based cross-sectional study
This study aimed to investigate the associations between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes at the population-level. We conducted a cross-sectional study using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data from 2013 to 2019. This study included 36,259 participants over 20 years of age who completed the questionnaire and had no history of hepatitis, cancer, or renal failure. In these participants, we analyzed associations between weight loss agents and elevated liver enzymes by constructing multiple logistic regression models with adjustment for confounding factors and stratified by sex, a...

Unintentional weight loss is reflected in worse one-year clinical outcomes among COPD outpatients
Unintended weight loss (UWL) is prevalent among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, little research has been done on UWL as an independent variable in terms of clinical outcome. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between BMI, UWL, and clinical outcome in terms of hospitalization, length of stay, exacerbations, mortality, and quality of life (QoL) within six months and one year in a hospital outpatient setting.

Analysis of Correlation between Age and Satisfied Total Weight Loss Percentage Outcome at 1 Year after Bariatric Surgery using the Restricted Cubic Spline Function: A Retrospective Study in China
ConclusionAge was an independent predictor of satisfied TWL% outcome one year following BS, and our study considered 32  years as a potential cut-off point. For Chinese patients over the age of 32 who are eligible for BS, it may be beneficial to do BS earlier as the probability of achieving a satisfied TWL% outcome may decrease with age.Graphical Abstract

Catechin hydrate ameliorates cerulein ‑induced chronic pancreatitis via the inactivation of TGF‑β/Smad2 signaling
Mol Med Rep. 2023 Nov;28(5):208. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2023.13095. Epub 2023 Sep 21.ABSTRACTChronic pancreatitis (CP) is a pancreatic inflammatory disease associated with histological changes, including fibrosis, acinar cell loss and immune cell infiltration, and leads to damage of the pancreas, which results in pain, weight loss and loss of pancreas function. Catechin or catechin hydrate (CH) has antioxidant, anticancer and immune‑regulatory effects. However, unlike other catechins, the antifibrotic effects of (+)‑CH have not been widely studied in many diseases, including CP. Therefore, the anti‑fibrotic effects of (+)â...

Modeling and investigation of swelling kinetics of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/starch/citric acid superabsorbent polymer
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 19:127013. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCrosslinked hydrophilic polymers with high water absorption rates are known as superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). Most commercial superabsorbent polymers are made with acrylic acid, which is difficult to biodegrade. So, in this investigation, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was utilized as a significant component in the synthesis of polysaccharide-based SAPs. Citric acid (CA) and starch were chosen as crosslinking agents because they are more eco-friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable than traditional crosslinking agents....

A service review of the long-term nutritional complications after admission for severe acute pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis is the most common acute gastrointestinal disease requiring hospitalisation. Severe Acute Pancreatitis (SAP), is defined by persistent organ failure beyond 48 hours or with local or regional complications1. Patients often experience weight loss, exocrine and endocrine insufficiency which may persist beyond hospital admission. Biochemical markers may become deranged secondary to pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). Clinical guidelines in acute pancreatitis lack recommendations regarding long-term nutritional monitoring2.

Weight gain following a change from Home Parenteral Nutrition to Intravenous Fluids only
Patient A, a 66 year old female was admitted to hospital with a prolapsed bowel leading to a small bowel resection and end ileostomy. She had a history of steroid induced diabetes mellitus and chronically infected leg ulcers. Repeated admissions to hospital with a high output ileostomy due to infections deranged electrolytes and weight loss resulted in commencement of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) under the care of the intestinal failure team.

Development of a digital, nutrition self-screening tool in response to Covid-19; empowering people with cancer to self-manage
People with cancer who have a good nutritional status benefit from improved treatment tolerance, improved outcomes and better quality of life1. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Oncology Dietitians noted significantly fewer face to face contacts between people with cancer and Health Care Professionals (HCPs). As a result, people at all stages of their cancer journey were less likely to have their nutritional problems identified and treated (e.g. unintended weight loss went unnoticed) and to ask their HCPs for advice.

Nutritional prehabilitation in head and neck cancer: a systematic review
On diagnosis up to 60% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are malnourished or at high risk of malnutrition(1). Treatment is often multi-modal resulting in substantial and potentially permanent side effects including dysphagia, oral mucositis, xerostomia, trismus, taste changes and/or nausea that often only serves to further exacerbate weight loss and functional decline. Prehabilitation, the period from diagnosis to commencement of treatment affords the opportunity to optimise nutritional, physical and emotional wellbeing.
