Exablate Neuro for Essential Tremor
Date: March 27, 2017 Issue #:  1517Summary:  The FDA has approved use ofExablate Neuro (Insightec) for unilateral thalamotomy to treat medication-refractory essential tremor in patients≥22 years old.Exablate Neuro uses magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) to create lesions in the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus. MRgFUS is also approved in the US for treatment of uterine fibroids and for pain palliation of bone metastases.

Neurosarcoidosis Directly Involving the Cervical Vagus Nerve.
CONCLUSIONS: Neurosarcoidosis may contribute to variable cranial neuropathies. Vocal fold paresis is usually thought to arise from mediastinal compression of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. Rarely, though, lesions may arise in other parts of the vagus nerve. Failure of response to steroids does not rule out the diagnosis, making tissue diagnosis important in some cases. Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Neurology - Report of the EAN SPN/ESNCH/ERcNsono Neuro-POCUS Working Group
Ultraschall Med. 2022 May 5. doi: 10.1055/a-1816-8548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the last decade, ultrasound examination in neurology has been undergoing a significant expansion of its modalities. In parallel, there is an increasing demand for rapid and high-quality diagnostics in various acute diseases in the prehospital setting, the emergency room, intensive care unit, and during surgical or interventional procedures. Due to the growing need for rapid answers to clinical questions, there is particular demand for diagnostic ultrasound imaging. The Neuro-POCUS working group, a joint project by the European Academy o...

Insightec touts near 50% tremor score improvement in pivotal Exablate Neuro study
Insightec today touted results from a pivotal study of its Exablate Neuro system, which met its primary endpoint with patients treated with the system reporting a 47% improvement in a composite tremor score at 3 months. Data from the study were published today in the New England Journal of Medicine. “MRI imaging and thermometry provide a high level of control during focused ultrasound thalamotomy. Importantly, before treatment, adjustments can be made based on intraoperative imaging and clinical feedback from the patient, contributing to a safe procedure,” primary study author Dr. W. Elias of the Universit...

Spectrum of neuro-genetic disorders in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) National population
This study shows that neuro-genetic disorders in the UAE are very heterogeneous at clinical and molecular levels. Using microarray, WES and WGS a diagnosis was reached in 50% of the patients while no diagnosis was reached in other half of the studied patients. It is possible that some mutations were missed by WGS and WES. However, it is also possible that many of disorders in UAE population are novel and the causative mutation is not yet discovered. More researches need to be done in this population to uncover the molecular basis of these disorders.PMID:34374989 | DOI:10.1111/cge.14044

Sex differences in sympathetic neuro-vascular and neuro-hemodynamic relationships during the cold pressor test
Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol. 2022 Mar 16. doi: 10.1152/ajpregu.00223.2021. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMuscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) affects vascular resistance differently in women and men. However, whether this sex difference persists during pronounced increases in MSNA remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine sex differences in neurovascular transduction during cold pressor test (CPT)-mediated sympatho-excitation. Integrated peroneal MSNA (microneurography) was measured at rest and during a 3-minute CPT in young healthy women (n=11) and men (n=10). Mean arterial pressu...
